The usefulness of "Maths Histories" as (part of) a holistic assessment tool

    No full text
A key issue in any educational context is diagnostic assessment, as this is often used to inform placement in and planning of specific classes. When it comes to adults with low educational achievements, the issue of assessing students is even more pertinent, since many of them have had negative educational experiences and are averse to formal tests. In this contribution we present first experiences with a qualitative assessment tool called maths histories, a concept that is based on the idea that individuals draw their personal maths history as a line graph. We shared insights learned from pilot interviews which we conducted with young and more experienced adults as well as a teacher and discuss next steps in developing this assessment tool

Orientation patterns of sports and physical activity among young people in Switzerland

    No full text
In recent years, adolescent sports and physical activity have become a multifaceted culture. Different patterns of sports and physical activities are assumed to be based on different subjective action orientations. This paper aims to examine the variations in sports and physical activity among youths and young adolescents based on the sports models proposed by Heinemann (2007) and the attributed action orientations based on Weber (2002). In a qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Swiss participants aged from 16 to 24 years to explore their sports and physical activities as well as their subjective attributed action orientations. The interviews were analyzed using the documentary method. The results of the present study demonstrate that ‘real types’ of sports models can be identified empirically in substantial accordance with the ‘ideal types’ of sports models proposed by Heinemann (2007). Four overarching types of orientation patterns emerged: (1) a value-rational orientation pattern with high importance of performance and competition; (2) a value-rational orientation pattern with high importance of autonomy and flexibility; (3) a purpose-rational orientation to achieve ideals of body, beauty, and slenderness; and (4) a purpose-rational orientation to achieve well-being

Exploring Immersive Language Learning Using Virtual Reality

    No full text
Computer-mediated reality (CMR) is a cutting-edge technology that gives numerous opportunities for language teaching and learning. Learners can enhance their language skills through immersion into contextualized environments where they enjoy rich and diverse sensational experiences. Through exposure to specific realistic computer-mediated content, they can learn how to express their authentic experiences. The added value of CMR is its three-dimensional representation, construction, and visualization of the learner’s concept. In the first part of this chapter, common CMR technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality are reviewed. The following sections focus on the affordances of CMR for learning and the conceptual framework underpinning language learning supported by CMR. Two existing project ideas are presented to illustrate how a CMR environment may be used in different aspects of language learning, i.e., reading, speaking, and writing. These two ongoing projects demonstrate the different affordances of CMR and how to derive meaningful research objectives based on the CMR environment. Toward the end of the chapter, potential research problems are examined to help researchers and practitioners find new research directions for further development

Multiprofessionelle Teams für starke Lernbeziehungen: Vier Thesen zum Thema Reduktion der Anzahl Fach- und Lehrpersonen an Schulklassen

    No full text
