Análisis multi-temporal de la biodiversidad aviar en el Centro Universitario Regional del Norte (Tolima, Colombia)

    No full text
Introduction: More and more studies include functional diversity to understand biodiversity patterns. However, in Tolima department, little research has been conducted on this aspect in bird communities, creating a knowledge gap to this important facet of biodiversity. Objective: To determine changes or patterns in the taxonomic and functional diversity of bird communities at the Centro Universitario Regional del Norte (CURDN) for eight years. Methods: The data were organized to identify changes in the bird community over time and during different climatic periods (high and low precipitation). Several indices of taxonomic and functional diversity (alpha and beta) were used. Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and Non-Parametric Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) were applied to evaluate the impact of climatic periods and temporal variation. Results: During the sampling, 2 691 individuals were recorded. We found that there was no difference in the taxonomic and functional alpha diversity. However, the results of these two facets of biodiversity revealed opposing patterns that are structuring bird communities. The partitioning analysis of taxonomic beta diversity revealed a process of species turnover, while functional beta diversity revealed functional nestedness. Conclusions: Functional diversity suggested that anthropogenic activities in the CURDN act as filters that structure bird communities. These findings highlight the importance of considering these two facets of biodiversity to determine changes or patterns in bird communities over a long perio

Corrupción al sufragante en Colombia: impacto, dinámicas y retos para la integridad electoral

    No full text
Although the practice of vote buying is common in Colombian elections, there is a lack of studies that analyze the functioning of these networks and their effect on democratic institutions and social welfare. This analysis focuses on how a network dedicated to vote buying operates, using two significant cases that occurred in Colombia as a reference, and investigates some consequences derived from this activity. It argues that vote buying not only entails crimes such as voter corruption and financing of electoral campaigns with prohibited sources, but also has negative repercussions on two essential aspects of contemporary democracy: political representation and electoral processes, which aggravates existing social inequalities. The study reveals that this phenomenon mainly affects the most economically disadvantaged, who paradoxically are the most likely to participate in such transactions. The relevance of this political phenomenon is manifested not only during elections, but its repercussions extend over time until the next electoral contest. Furthermore, to sustain these clientelist networks, acts of corruption are resorted to, such as the misappropriation of public resources and the exercise of influence peddling. Therefore, one of the most significant impacts of corruption-related political clientelism on the voter is the implementation of corrupt practices, since these are the methods used by the political structures involved in the purchase of votes to ensure effective acquisition of the vote after the negotiation of electoral support.PregradoAbogadoINTRODUCCIÓN.....4 1. Microencapsulation of Theobroma cacao L polyphenols: A high-value approach with in vitro anti-Trypanosoma cruzi, immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities

    No full text
Chagas disease (CHD) is the highest economic burden parasitosis worldwide and the most important cardiac infection, without therapeutic alternatives to halt or reverse its progression. In CHD-experimental models, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds have demonstrated therapeutic potential in cardiac dysfunction. Theobroma cacao polyphenols are potent natural antioxidants with cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory action, which are susceptible to degradation, requiring technological approaches to guarantee their protection, stability, and controlled release. Here, 21 cocoa polyphenol-rich microencapsulates were produced by spray-drying and freeze-drying techniques using two wall materials (maltodextrin and gum arabic). Chemical (total and individual phenolic content and antioxidant activity), structural (morphology), and biological parameters (cytotoxicity, trypanocidal, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities) were assessed to determine the most efficient microencapsulation conditions on Trypanosoma cruzi-infected myocardioblast and macrophage cells. Significant antiproliferative properties against infected cells (superior to benznidazole) were found in two microencapsulates which also exhibited cardioprotective properties against oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death

This research aims to analyze the relationship between attachment to place, identity to place, and sense of community with age, represented by ranks, of people living in neighborhoods at risk of natural disasters in the city of Ibagué, Colombia. This is a quantitative study with a correlational-exploratory scope, with the participation of 862 subjects from the 13 communes of the city of Ibagué, aged between 10 and 89 years. The results suggest that there is a positive relationship between the variables of attachment to place, identity to place, and sense of community with the age of its inhabitants. In addition, it was possible to establish that people between 40 and 59 years of age present better levels of attachment to place, identity to place and sense of community than people in the other age ranges. © (2024), (Associacao Brasileira de Psicologia Social)

Spotting Leaders in Organizations with Graph Convolutional Networks, Explainable Artificial Intelligence, and Automated Machine Learning

    No full text
Over the past few decades, the study of leadership theory has expanded across various disciplines, delving into the intricacies of human behavior and defining the roles of individuals within organizations. Its primary objective is to identify leaders who play significant roles in the communication flow. In addition, behavioral theory posits that leaders can be distinguished based on their daily conduct, while social network analysis provides valuable insights into behavioral patterns. Our study investigates five and six types of social networks frequently observed in different organizations. This study is conducted using datasets we collected from an IT company and public datasets collected from a manufacturing company for the thorough evaluation of prediction performance. We leverage PageRank and effective word embedding techniques to obtain novel features. State-of-the-art performance is obtained using various statistical machine learning methods, graph convolutional networks (GCN), automated machine learning (AutoML), and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). More specifically, our approach can achieve state-of-the-art performance with an accuracy close to (Formula presented.) for leaders identification with data from projects of different types. This investigation contributes to the establishment of sustainable leadership practices by aiding organizations in retaining their leadership talent

Verify the measurement equivalence by nationality (Colombia and Ecuador), internal consistency, and discrimination and difficulty from the Item Response Theory of the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Instrumental study based on Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT). 464 university students, 217 of Colombian (54.4% women, mean age = 20.9 years, SD = 3.4), and 250 Ecuadorian (60% women, mean age = 21 years, SD = 2.0). The SWLS presented a single-factor model for both the Colombian and Ecuadorian samples. In addition, the instrument presented measurement equivalence between countries at the metric level and has adequate internal consistency according to the CTT criteria. Finally, regarding the IRT criteria, the items present adequate discrimination and difficulty. The SWLS presents evidence of cross-cultural invariance in addition to having new properties based on the IRT that have not been fully investigated before

    No full text
Multimorbidity has emerged as a challenge for health systems due to its association with adverse clinical outcomes. Given the limited information available on multimorbidity, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, this study characterizes multimorbidity patterns in the population of Bogotá, Colombia in 2018. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we analyzed 16 million medical consultation records from Bogotá reported in the National Service Delivery Records in 2018. Using network analysis, we quantified the prevalence of multimorbidity in the population and identified the most common associations between diagnoses, with data stratified by age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Results: The study found that the prevalence of multimorbidity in the population was 44.2 %, increased with age, and was higher in women and in people affiliated to the contributory health scheme. Allergies and vasomotor rhinitis with asthma were common in young people. In women aged 19–39 years, obesity with hypothyroidism was common, while men in the same age group had obesity with dyslipidemia. In people aged 60 years and older, essential hypertension with dyslipidemia was the most common. In addition, some associations between diagnoses showed a higher association in people affiliated to the subsidized health scheme, with notable associations with trauma, especially in men. Conclusion: Overall, the results provide valuable insights into multimorbidity in the population and highlight inequalities based on sociodemographic factors. Future research should investigate whether the lower prevalence of multimorbidity in vulnerable groups is related to biases in data collection or to underlying inequalities in healthcare access
