Effect of various carbon electrodes on MIP-Based sensing proteins using poly(Scopoletin): A case study of ferritin
Sensitivity in the sub-nanomolar concentration region is required to determine important protein biomarkers, e.g., ferritin. As a prerequisite for high sensitivity, in this paper, the affinity of the functional monomer to the macromolecular target ferritin in solution was compared with the value for the respective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrodes, and the influence of various surface modifications of the electrode was investigated. The analytical performance of ferritin sensing was investigated using three different carbon electrodes (screen-printed carbon electrodes, singlewalled-carbon-nanotube-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes, and glassy carbon electrodes) covered with a scopoletin-based MIP layer. Regardless of the electrode type, the template molecule ferritin was mixed with the functional monomer scopoletin, and electropolymerization was conducted using multistep amperometry. All stages of MIP preparation were followed by evaluating the diffusional permeability of the redox marker ferricyanide/ferrocyanide through the polymer layer by differential pulse voltammetry. The best results were obtained with glassy carbon electrodes. The MIP sensor responded up to 0.5 µM linearly with a Kd of 0.30 µM. Similar results were also obtained in solution upon the interaction of scopoletin and ferritin using fluorescence spectroscopy, resulting in the quenching of the scopoletin signal, with a calculated Kd of 0.81 µM. Moreover, the binding of 1 µM ferritin led to 49.6% suppression, whereas human serum albumin caused 8.6% suppression
A model on charter rate prediction in container shipping
The maritime industry has witnessed numerous challenges in recent years after the global pandemic, primarily characterized by sharp fluctuations in the daily charter rates. Considering an unpredictable business environment, this study aims to suggest a financial forecasting model on charter rates, creating added value for the stakeholders of the maritime trade business. The empirical analysis utilized the data from the Clarksons Research Portal, which encompassed 7,409 charter rental transactions of container ships from 01.01.2018 to 10.03.2023. After examining seven different linear and ensemble regressions, it was revealed that the XGBoost regressor resulted in the least RMSE value of 0.1833 with an R2 of 0.9015. The selected predictors were the TEU, container fixture type, charter time, charter time multiplied by TEU, ship age, laycan year, and laycan month, respectively. In addition to coping with the limitations of linear regression, the model revealed that the laycan years, charter time, and charter time multiplied with TEU were the essential variables in charter rate prediction. As a result, the model developed in the study can be used as an important decision support tool for stakeholders in the container shipping industry
Analyzing of the European green deal and un 2030 agenda on the basis of sustainability
Global economic competitiveness has risen along with industrialisation, and new technological advancements have been produced. As a result, greenhouse gas emissions have reached critical levels, posing a threat to human life. In this context, the UN and the EU, who have made various contributions to ensuring sustainability so far, have prepared future plans. In 2015, the UN formed the UN 2030 Agenda, setting sustainable development goals under 17 headings. On the other hand, in 2020 the EU approved the European Green Deal, outlining a roadmap to lead Europe's green transition. This research focuses on the environmental goals of the the European Green Deal and, UN 2030 Agenda which is based on creating a sustainable life. In this context, the aims of both approaches for addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity, and providing clean energy are going to be discussed. The research will analyze which aim is more comprehensive, whether they are effectively continuing the process towards their goals, the differences between the aims outlined by the two, what they have achieved in recent years on these topics, and in which areas they have lagged. The research aims to provide current data and fill the literature gap by analyzing data from the last years
Strengthened bonds by chemical development at surface of low dielectric PMMA/Borax composite for low reflection of broadband waves (500 MHz—50 GHz)
PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) and borax doped copolymer were synthesized by using atom transfer radical polymerization method. The uses of this copolymer were evaluated to spread it and to a wider area of use or to place it in specialized use in certain areas for the application fields of this copolymer. The results of the XPS analysis presented the bonds formed between C, O, B, and Cu and the types of bonds (single, double, or triple bond) based on the binding energies of the atoms. PMMA/Borax composite has presented that there was a relation between the chemical features of surface bonding and the modification of the dielectric properties with smaller values with the change of the borax amount. The behaviour of low reflection of broadband waves (500 MHz—50 GHz) interacting with the composite was influenced by several factors (including the modification of the composite's composition by borax at the optimum amount). The low reflection of broadband waves (500 MHz—50 GHz) was modified by the strengthened bonds as the result of the chemical development at the surface structure. The transmittance of the X-band microwave signal has been performed through the material for the use of the radome application. The passing of the signal to the other side of the material was provided by the maximum attenuation of 2.74 dB for use in the potential radome applications
Readiness and Maturity of Smart and Sustainable Supply Chains: A Model Proposal
Many companies embrace Industry 4.0 technologies to enable operational sustainability against increasing climate change effects, decreasing natural resources, and raising consumer awareness of environmental issues. Even though readiness and maturity assessment of smartness and sustainability concepts are nested, no study simultaneously focuses on these concepts. As pioneering research, we propose a novel model titled Smart and Sustainable Supply chain Readiness and Maturity model (S3RM) and validate it by conducting a case study in the automotive industry. We design our model upon the triple-bottom-line (TBL) approach consisting of smartness and sustainability dime5nsions. Our study introduces the TBL of smartness covering availability, integrity, and adaptability sub-dimension. TBL of sustainability includes social, environmental, and economic sub-dimensions. The proposed model calculates the Smart and Sustainable Readiness and Maturity Index by averaging sustainability scores' summation and smartness scores' multiplication. Each sub-dimension consists of items measured by a readiness and maturity scale. The findings suggest how smartness and sustainability items create strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the supply chain operations. Our model provides managerial implications in assessing the readiness and maturity of Industry 4.0 tools and sustainability indicators. This study offers a road map to managers on smart and sustainable supply chains' defined target areas
Influence of anisotropy on the deformation behaviour in microtensile 316L steel specimens fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M)
Laser powder bed fusion of metals (PBF LB/M) allows fabrication of intricate structures without any need of tools and moulds. In this process the building orientation becomes a significant issue for the complex structures. Here we fabricated small size 316L steel tensile specimens aligned with their loading axis perpendicular and parallel to the building direction by PBF LB/M. Microstructure and mechanical properties were characterized by colour etching, in-situ tensile testing in a scanning electron microscope, nanoindentation and digital image correlation. The orientation of the melt pools has a significant impact on the deformation behaviour of the PBF LB/M specimens. In parallel specimens (polar angle = 90o ) the semi-circular melt pools are aligned perpendicular to the loading axis resulting in an accommodation of larger amount of plasticity as compared to the perpendicular specimens (polar angle = 0o ). While strain is localized in the case of perpendicular specimens because primary slip lines are aligned perpendicular to the loading axis, strain is homogenously distributed along the longitudinal axis of the parallel specimens because primary slip lines are aligned parallel to the loading axis. Twin-inducedplasticity and transformation induced plasticity are the deformation mechanisms observed on the fractured specimens. Strain hardening rate in stage IV extended to a higher stress value for the perpendicular specimens as compared to parallel specimens because cross slip is confined in the fusion boundaries. The building direction has shown significant influence on the deformation mechanisms of the PBF LB/M steels which may be a significant issue to overcome for the complex shape specimens
