    No full text
The paper examines the marginalia of Lazar Baranovych in two copies of his sermon collections, “Mech Dukhovnyi” (“The Spiritual Sword”, 1666) and “Truby na dni narochyti” (“Trumpets for Major Feast Days”, 1674), preserved in the Early Printed and Rare Books Department of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. The aim of the study is to identify references to the sources Baranovych used and to reconstruct the circle of works and authors that shaped his reading repertoire. The research demonstrated that, besides mentioning the Eastern Fathers of the Church, which is common for an Orthodox hierarch, Baranovych also engaged with the lives of Western saints and works by Roman Catholic authors of the early modern period. Notably, his reading preferences included Polish authors, particularly several 17th-century Catholic preachers. Furthermore, Baranovych cited hagiographic and historical literature, as well as classical antiquity texts. A significant portion of his marginalia comprises biblical quotations, reflecting his deep engagement with scripture. A distinctive feature of Baranovych’s marginalia is his use of self-quotation, referencing his own writings. The analyzed copies, densely annotated with Baranovych’s handwritten notes, represent unique monuments in the history of the Ukrainian book culture in the 17th century. They provide valuable insights into both the author’s practice of revisiting his own works and his habit of compiling reading excerpts and citations.

The library of the Hilandar Monastery has preserved nine copies of the Verse Prologue dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries, as well as two convolutes in which the Verse Prologue follows the monthly Service Menaion. Among these copies, particular attention is given to prologues that combine readings from both the Bulgarian and Serbian translations. This study focuses on manuscript Hil. 436, which contains the Verse Prologue for the period from March to August, and which was transcribed by the monk Savva in 1621. The aim of the research was to determine the composition and linguistic features of this manuscript. To establish its editorial affiliation, the content of the manuscript was systematically analyzed in comparison with the representatives of the Bulgarian and Serbian translations of the Verse Prologue. The analysis of copy Hil. 436 revealed that the section from March10 to August 31 follows the Bulgarian translation, while the initial part, from March 1 to March 9, correspondsto the Serbian translation. Furthermore, the linguistic features of manuscript Hil. 436 indicatethat no subsequent editorial revisions were introduced.

The most memorable protagonists in any given piece of Classical Literature are often the characters who face and overcome the greatest psychological trials and obstacles. This article studies the choices of two such characters who both experience extreme and unimaginable sorrow – Homer’s Andromache and Shakespeare’s Juliet. While one character is content with her role in society, the other tries to break convention in order to be with her love. A deeper psychoanalytical study of their actions and choices, with particular emphasis on the effects of ‘sorrow’ through the lens of Freud’s concepts of bereavement and melancholia, are analyzed in this article. From love and contentment, both women face trials and tribulations which lead to loss and death. However, both these characters’ reactions toward their sorrows are what set them apart from one another; while one woman is idolized as the quintessential pinnacle of womanhood for all generations, the other is immortalized as the rebellious protagonist of a Shakespearean Romantic tragedy.Įsimintiniausi kiekvieno klasikinės literatūros kūrinio veikėjai dažnai yra tie, kurie susiduria su didžiausiais psichologiniais išbandymais bei kliūtimis ir jas įveikia.

The Witcher (Wiedźmin) – a fantasy storyworld originating from Andrzej Sapkowski’s Polish literary series – is fundamentally shaped by narratives of reproduction, in/fertility, and non/motherhood, raising critical questions about women’s roles and empowerment. From fertility cults and enforced sterilization to genetic experimentation and dynastic ambitions, these themes drive character arcs and central conflicts across the saga’s transmedial universe. This article examines the interplay of non/motherhood, female agency, and bodily autonomy in Sapkowski’s books and the Netflix adaptation, exploring how The Witcher envisions women’s success and worth through the tensions between maternal and non-maternal identities. Grounded in fantasy, Gothic, and horror traditions, this analysis maps gynaehorror tropes in unwanted maternity and examines how the archetypes of absent and self-sacrificing mothers speak to the constraints on culturally legible identities of women. Finally, an adaptation studies approach highlights the ideological shifts across different media. While the franchise explicitly advocates reproductive freedom, its treatment of non-maternal desires reveals a paradox: reproductive rights are championed in principle, yet character arcs privilege idealized motherhood. The Netflix adaptation further narrows the non-maternal possibilities of the source material, reimagining originally non-maternal characters through maternal lens. Ultimately, the self-sacrificing mother emerges as the defining framework for female value, reflecting the franchise’s internal contradictions and broader cultural anxieties surrounding non/motherhood.

In this article, F. Dostoevsky’s Christmas tale “The Beggar Boy at Christ’s Christmas Tree”, published in the Writer’s Diary in 1876 and sometimes referred to by scholars as a Christmas fairy tale, is examined in the context of two surrounding works – one text titled “A Boy with His Hand Stretched out for Alms” and another about a colony of juvenile delinquents. Although each of the three texts on the shared theme of child suffering is written in a different genre and style, together, they form a unified thematic block, combining elements of the journalistic, the fairy-tale, the Christian, and the documentary. The introduction of fairy-tale motifs into a literary work – which underlies the second, central part of the triptych about suffering children – is, from the author’s perspective, a distinctive artistic device through which the tragic motifs of the Christmas tale are further intensified, signaling the writer’s disbelief in the possibility of overcoming human suffering through the efforts of any magical helper, who is traditionally a hero of the fairy-tale genre. In this triptych, the conditional ‘fairy-tale lie’ is juxtaposed with the plot about a children’s colony, in which another, equally obscure yet more realistic motif of the salvation of the world is outlined.

Antikinės kalbos L. Valkūno ir A. Dambrausko korespondencijoje

The article analyzes the use of ancient languages (Latin and Ancient Greek) in the correspondence of Antanas Dambrauskas and Leonas Valkūnas, spanning nearly five decades. During the Soviet era, when communication ‒ especially through letters ‒ could not ensure privacy, these languages became a subtle means for them to add layers of meaning to the information they conveyed, show their intellectual distinctiveness, and emphasize their ideas. The study identifies three main categories of the use of ancient languages: isolated phrases, direct quotations from ancient authors, and original sentences written in Latin. It examines when and in what cases these forms of expression functioned as mechanisms of Aesopian language, allowing the transmission of messages understandable only to the letter’s author and its recipient. Additionally, it analyzes instances where these languages were used for other purposes, such as expressing condolences or respect. The article also highlights the significance of ancient languages in shaping the cultural identity of Soviet-era Lithuanian intellectuals who had received their education in independent Lithuania, revealing their efforts to preserve the classical culture under challenging historical circumstances. Be to, nagrinėjami atvejai, kai minėtos kalbos buvo vartojamos kitais tikslais, pavyzdžiui, siekiant išreikšti užuojautą ar pagarbą, kartu suteikiant jausmų raiškai autentišką humanistinį skambesį. Straipsnis taip pat atskleidžia antikinių kalbų reikšmę sovietinės Lietuvos intelektualams, išsilavinimą įgijusiems nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje, bei jų kultūriniam identitetui, rodo pastangas puoselėti europinę kultūrą esant sudėtingoms istorijos aplinkybėms
