War Discourse in Bohdan Tomenchuk’s Poetry: language and memory

    No full text
The article analyses the war narrative of the contemporary Ukrainian poet Bohdan Tomenchuk. The object of the analysis is more than three hundred works from the author’s latest collection, each of which contains a war motif. The analysis is based on the works of memory by Maurice Halbwachs, Paul Ricoeur, Friedrich Nietzsche, Michael Basseler, and Dorothee Birke. The methods used are “memory studies” (at the intersection of history and psychology) with an emphasis on the sociological aspect of memory, as well as the hermeneutic method with attention to cognition mediated in symbols. This article aims to explore how B. Tomenchuk records the war through the material and spiritual dimensions. In Bohdan Tomenchuk’s poetry, the material side of war often has a national colour. Weapons (sword, sabre) are correlated with the ancient epochs of Ukrainian history, and elements of protection (body armour) are correlated with national clothing (embroidery). Instead, the spiritual side of the war appeals to the universal experience of war as a wound (shrapnel in the body or torn off pieces, PTSD and mental distress). Ontologically, both physical and mental wounds appear as a symbol of a world fragmented by war, in which the fate of a person and a nation becomes a test of the ability to survive. From the point of view of linguistic representation, we can speak of a minimal number of tropes (similes and metaphors), but symbolization and polysemy in the poet’s works are powerful

Growth Effect of Foreign Direct Investment in Asean Economies: Does Institutional Quality Matter?

    No full text
This paper empirically studies how foreign direct investment affects economic growth and how this effect depends on institutional quality. Using threshold regression analysis on panel data for nine ASEAN countries from 2002 to 2020, the estimated results indicate a nonlinear impact of foreign direct investment on growth across various institutional regimes. When the institutional quality falls below the threshold value, foreign direct investment has a negative effect on growth. However, when institutional quality exceeds this value, foreign direct investment contributes positively to economic growth. In particular, we observe that FDI facilitates economic growth in most ASEAN countries when institutional quality is above the threshold value, except for Laos. This finding emphasizes that institutional quality significantly influences the effectiveness of foreign direct investment on economic growth. Based on the research findings, we propose several policy implications to improve institutional quality in ASEAN countries to enhance the positive impact of foreign direct investment on the economy

Unlocking Financial Potential: Self-efficacy Transforming Capability into Well-Being for Working Women

    No full text
The primary purpose of this study is to identify the influence of financial capabilities on women’s financial well-being and to study the mediating influence of self-efficacy in this relationship in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). The data were collected through purposive sampling using a questionnaire distributed from February to May 2024 to Delhi-NCR women engaged in any economic activity. Delhi-NCR is a metropolitan area encompassing Delhi and its surrounding districts in neighbouring states. Data analysis was performed on 250 responses from working women using purposive sampling. Variance-based Partial Least Square Structure Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to test the conceptual model. This study operationalizes and validates financial capabilities as a reflective higher-order construct formed by two dimensions such as financial literacy and inclusion. Findings illustrate that financial capabilities directly influence working women’s financial well-being, and this relationship was partially mediated by financial self-efficacy. To improve women workers’ financial well-being, such policies and programs should be tailored to boost women’s confidence levels and beliefs, education, and inclusion in the financial dimension. This study directs policymakers, government, employers, and financial institutions to build confidence levels among women by organizing workshops and programs, which promotes their financial well-being and ultimately empowers them financially

Art and Culture Patronage in Lithuania: Impact on Culture, Business, and Society

    No full text
Art patronage has traditionally been considered a philanthropic act that supports cultural and artistic expression. This paper explores how modern art patronage has evolved into diverse models such as venture philanthropy, crowdfunding, and impact investment, while reflecting broader changes in social values, business interests, and public policies. Using Lithuania as a case study, we analyse historical and emerging patronage practices and their effects on culture, business, and society. The article integrates theoretical and empirical insights and incorporates new perspectives from cultural policy and altruism studies. Particular attention is given to motivations behind giving, the evolving role of the patron, and how strategic patronage can create social value in a time of public funding decline. This research contributes to understanding patronage’s potential to balance economic rationality and cultural sustainability

Rescue Strategy in Cardiogenic Shock: Emergency Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation for Failed Bioprosthetic Valve – Case Report

    No full text
Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as an essential therapeutic intervention for patients with severe aortic valve disease, providing a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery, particularly in high-risk individuals. TAVI is also increasingly utilized as a valve-in-valve strategy in cases of a bioprosthetic valve failure. However, data on the efficacy of TAVI in the context of a hemodynamic collapse remain limited. Methods: This report represents a young, high-risk patient with a failed bioprosthetic valve and cardiogenic shock treated successfully with TAVI.Results: Emergency TAVI using a Medtronic Evolut Pro+ device achieved rapid hemodynamic stabilization and favorable post-procedural clinical and functional outcomes. Intermittent complete atrioventricular block necessitated the implantation of a permanent pacemaker. Conclusions: This case highlights the potential of TAVI as a safe and effective intervention in critical clinical scenarios. Emergency TAVI is a viable therapeutic intervention for patients with failed surgical bioprostheses presenting with cardiogenic shock

Artery of Percheron Stroke: A Case Report

    No full text
Background: The Artery of Percheron (AOP) is a vascular variant supplying both sides of the thalamus, present in up to one-quarter of the general population. AOP occlusion is a rare cause of ischemic stroke, resulting in bilateral thalamic infarction. It typically manifests as altered consciousness, gaze abnormalities, and cognitive impairment. Neuroimaging of AOP stroke is challenging, as head CT is often unremarkable. However, a diagnostic ‘V’ sign can be identified on MRI. AOP stroke is treated as other types of ischemic stroke.Case description: We present a case of a 61-year-old male with a history of alcohol abuse, diagnosed with ischemic AOP stroke. He presented with sudden loss of consciousness, third nerve palsy, and vertical gaze palsy. MRI revealed bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction with midbrain involvement. Despite conservative treatment, his condition showed minimal improvement, leaving him lethargic and dysarthric. He was discharged to palliative care after two weeks. Conclusions: AOP infarction, though rare, should be considered in patients with altered consciousness. Early MRI is essential for accurate diagnosis and timely treatment, highlighting the importance of physician awareness of this condition

An Anomalous Right Coronary Artery Originating from the Left Anterior Descending Artery, a Case Report of Successful Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

    No full text
Background: An anomalous right coronary artery (RCA) originating from the left anterior descending artery (LAD) is a rare subtype of single coronary artery ostium. Revascularization in such cases is challenging due to the large feeding territory or the potential for compression by an adjacent vessel.Case description: We report the case of a 57-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with exertional chest pain and dyspnea. An anomalous RCA was identified, originating from the mid-portion of the LAD. Coronary angiography and coronary multi-detector computed tomography revealed a significant stenosis at the LAD just proximal to the RCA bifurcation. A successful percutaneous coronary intervention was performed to revascularize the LAD stenosis. The patient was discharged in good general condition two days later. Conclusions: Despite the rarity of coronary anomalies, future studies could be undertaken to assess the potential benefits of screening, particularly in specific populations such as professional athletes

Šilutės Vydūno gimnazijos teritorijoje esančių medžių alerginio potencialo įvertinimas

Urban green spaces have both positive and negative effects on people’s quality of life. The natural environment has a positive effect on people’s emotional state. People are negatively affected by the pollen emitted by vegetation, which is the main source of airborne allergens. When selecting vegetation for urban green spaces, the allergenicity of plants should be considered. Carinanos et al. (2014) developed an index (IUGZA) to assess the allergenicity of vegetation growing in urban green spaces. The index considers various plant characteristics such as allergenic potential, pollination strategy and duration, number, and size of individuals. The values of the IUGZA index range from 0 to 1, where a value of 0 means that there are no allergenic plants in the area, and a value of 1 means that all plants are allergenic. The area of Šilutė Vydūnas Gymnasium in Lithuania was surveyed 174 trees of different sizes were assessed and the allergenicity index of the area was calculated with a value of 0.046. The value of the index indicates that the site has a low allergenic potential and is therefore considered a favourable environment for people sensitive to inhaled allergens. Although the results of the assessment indicate low allergenicity of the site, it is recommended to increase biodiversity by planting trees and other plants and to ensure proper management and maintenance of urban green spaces.

    No full text
The article discusses letters written by the participants of the Lithuanian anti-Soviet armed resistance to their family members, loved ones, comrades-in-arms, contact persons, supporters, as well as provocateurs and Soviet collaborators. This is the first attempt at covering this unique part of the documentary heritage of the partisan war, which has survived in the archives hidden by the partisans themselves, files from the state security agency and the criminal ones, and by the families of the fighters’ relatives, and has not been researched so far.Using the method of content analysis, the author of the article examines over 400 letters written by the partisans under wartime conditions, presenting in more detail letters of farewell, concern, longing and love, news or agreements. He uses two examples to show the exceptional value of the partisan letters as historical sources. Special attention is given to the communication networks and contact persons who made the partisan mail service operational and correspondence possible. It is concluded that partisan letters in Lithuanian history and culture are war letters, or war correspondence, imbued with pain caused by separation of the freedom fighters from their families and the loved ones, as well as their concern for the living conditions and fate of the latter. However, these letters also express their determination to fight, hatred for the enemy, and love of the homeland. Although the content of many partisan letters is businesslike, they often openly reveal or imply the fragile existential situation of the freedom fighters. Be to, laiškai kupini pasiryžimo kovoti, neapykantos priešui ir meilės Tėvynei. Nors daugelio partizanų laiškų turinys dalykinis, juose dažnai atvirai reiškiamas arba yra juntamas laisvės kovotojo būties trapumas.&nbsp
