    Get PDF
This study is a contrastive analysis of the morphology of plural formations in English and Ụkwụanị. It is primarily directed at investigating the cross-linguistic variations in plural formation processes and the acquisitional challenges they pose. With insight from Auto-segmental phonology, primary and secondary data were analyzed using probability sampling and nominal scale. Data analyses revealed that phonological conditioning of the D1 morpheme and realizing nouns through allomorphs is only obtainable in English. However, plural noun formations are morphological processes involving vowel and consonant spreading of the skeletal tier. The study identifies the structural divergence between English and Ụkwụanị in number marking systems and establishes the pedagogical value of pluralization. The study recommends that English language teachers, especially in the Niger Delta region, particularly among Ụkwụanị users of English, should utilize auto-segmental phonology in the teaching/learning processes to avoid overgeneralization. Keywords: Contrastive analysis, pluralization, nouns, morphology, phonology, Ụkwụan

Concept of Automated Income Tax in Edo State Nigeria: Learning from the American System

    Get PDF
Nigeria's tax framework, as defined by Section 24(f) of the Constitution, mandates that all citizens fulfill their tax obligations. This legal foundation empowers various government levels to collect taxes, including income taxes from individuals and corporations. However, the persistent issue of tax evasion remains a significant obstacle to revenue generation in Nigeria. This problem isn't confined to a specific region, as Edo State, too, grapples with income tax evasion, detrimentally impacting its revenues. Despite legislative and judicial efforts, tax evasion prevails. In response, the Edo State Government introduced the Edo Revenue Automate System (ERAS), a computerized solution aimed at streamlining individual income tax administration and curbing evasion. Concerning this, the study tends to adopt a doctrinal method of study in ascertaining the legal issues of adopting automated income tax in Edo State, drawing inspiration from the United States, where a well-established computerized income tax system operates under the backing of enacted laws. The study therefore found that there are incidences of tax evasion in Edo state, that though the adoption of an automated income tax system could aid in curtailing the incidence of tax evasion in the State, there are legal and socio-economic shortcomings that could hamper the Edo State automated income tax system. In this regard, this study recommends and concludes with proposals for enhancing the effectiveness of the computerized individual income tax system in Edo State. The study further emphasizes the need for a strong legal framework to support technology-driven tax systems and the importance of adopting best practices from countries like the United States to mitigate tax evasion. Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage in Nigeria: Establishment of an Administrative Institution with Arbitrative Power to the Rescue?

    Get PDF
The incessant restiveness in Nigeria`s oil-producing communities over the lack of fair, adequate and prompt compensation for oil pollution damage puts a big question mark on the effectiveness of the country`s current legal arrangement for compensation for oil pollution damage. Nigeria has no legal system for compensation for oil pollution damage, as there is no single law that is specifically enacted for it. No policy is formulated for its implementation, and no regulatory institution is established to enforce it. This study adopts a multi-method research design, incorporating both traditional legal analysis (doctrinal method) and socio-legal research techniques (non-doctrinal method) to investigate the effectiveness of compensation for oil pollution damage in Nigeria. For the doctrinal aspect, the study relies on relevant international laws, conventions and treaties, local legislation, past and extant Nigeria`s Constitution, case law, textbooks, academic publications, law reports, encyclopedias, law dictionaries, and newspaper publications. For the non-doctrinal method of legal research, the study uses questionnaire survey as a versatile tool to gather useful and appropriate data/information on the effectiveness of energy industry compensation in some selected oil-producing communities of Bayelsa and Rivers States. The paper, therefore, suggests the development of a legal system of compensation for oil pollution damage that is based on the enactment of comprehensive law for compensation for oil pollution damage and the establishment of an independent regulatory institution with powers of arbitration, and its own rules of procedure, that will facilitate prompt, adequate and fair resolution of matters of compensation for oil pollution damage

The research employed a correlational design to examine the interrelationships between parental background and children's educational attainment in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. It specifically examined parents` socioeconomic variables such as level of income and education that influence children's educational attainment. The population of the study comprised households from 15 electoral wards in Maiduguri, from which five wards were randomly selected, representing 20% of the total. Following Smith's (1975) guidelines for small populations, purposive sampling was utilized to identify 200 households. Data collection was facilitated through a self-constructed questionnaire titled Parental Background, and Educational Attainment (PBEA), which was validated by experts with an emphasis on face and content validity. A pilot study was also conducted in two wards excluded from the main sample to test the reliability of the instrument. The reliability was determined using the Pearson correlation coefficient at a significance level of 0.05. Data analysis involved the Pearson moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression to evaluate the relationships between educational attainment and parents` socioeconomic variables. The findings indicated a significant correlation amongst children's educational attainment and parents` income and level of education. Therefore, it was recommended that government should invest hugely on free education to school age children. This will enable economically disadvantaged children to acquire free education in spite of their socioeconomic background. From Passive Partakers to Sexual Provocateurs: A Taxonomic Study of the Emerging Sexual Identities of Women in Nigeria’s Digital Space

    Get PDF
Female sexuality in Nigeria is exiting the traditional orbit where its patterns and parameters were foregrounded to a socially calibrated enclave determined by the erotic energy of women exercising their sexual autonomy in Nigeria’s digital space. As if fighting the conspiracy of silence that has enshrouded their sexual agency, young women and girls in Nigeria are becoming overtly assertive about their sexual needs, bodily rights, and romantic expectations in ways that are reinforcing their sexual empowerment and agency. This paper attempts a taxonomic examination of the trends in the sexual identities of women discernible in the comic skits and memes of female content creators who specialise in producing content involving women expressing their primal libidinal instincts. Theoretical inspiration is drawn from Jeffrey Week’s theoretical work on sexuality (2007). Data were curated from memes on Facebook featuring women from the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria - Yorùbá, Hausa and Igbo - who explicitly expressed their libidinal urges and sexual agency. Eight memes were purposively selected based on their features, substantiating the arguments raised in this study. The study reveals that the potent libidinal forces of women on social media can be grouped into four sexual types: the sexpert, the erotophile, the succubus and the fetishist. The study concluded that sexuality has transformed from the orbit of traditional moralism and cultural enclave to the threshold of sexual egalitarianism in Nigeria. A Comparative Legal Analysis of the Fundamental Human Rights Enshrined in Nigeria and Uganda Constitutions

    Get PDF
What is now known today as Fundamental Human Rights came to lamb light through a United Nations declaration called the UDHR; Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of 1948. This document may have not been a legal instrument per se but a mere declaration for the world to follow. Because it was not an instrument to be relied on in Court when these rights were violated, there was a need for separate documents to be created and that led to the creation of two instruments out of it Known as ICCPR and ICESCR. These two legal instruments have been incorporated by Nigeria and Uganda with little variations adopted in their constitutions. It is concerning that this study seeks to educate readers through a comparative analysis of the fundamental human rights stipulated in the Nigeria and Uganda Constitutions to show their similarities and differences and if there are gaps make recommendations to fill them. Concerning this the study adopts a doctrinal method of research, utilizing primary and secondary sources. The study found that Nigeria and Uganda have recognized these rights and codified them under chapter four of their Constitutions, these rights are referred to as inalienable rights are they cannot be transferred, sold, or shared among citizens. The constitution of Nigeria and the constitution of Uganda guarantee their citizens protection of these rights where; violation will attract full punishment by the Law. However, there are core variations in these which in essence the Uganda constitutional rights seem to be more encompassing than the Nigerian rights provided for in the constitution. Hence this study concludes and recommends the need for Nigeria government to take a leap from the Uganda perspective of human rights as contain in their constitution.
