Workforce diversity is widely acknowledged as a vital element affecting the performance and sustainability of higher education institutions. This study examines the development of a measurement instrument to assess the success of diversity management in Nigerian universities, highlighting the necessity for a standardised, culturally relevant evaluation tool. Variety in global higher education institutions is associated with enhanced innovation, academic achievement, and organisational efficiency; yet, managing this variety is a difficulty, especially within the Nigerian setting. The study identifies deficiencies in diversity management, emphasising the lack of established instruments to evaluate institutional strategies for workforce diversity. It presents a conceptual framework that incorporates essential characteristics such as leadership commitment, inclusive recruitment techniques, organisational culture, and diversity policies. The study seeks to create an instrument that functions as a practical tool for institutional evaluation and a resource for improving diversity policies and practices by integrating social identity theory, institutional theory, and the resource-based view. The results are anticipated to enhance the literature on diversity in African higher education, offering insights into how Nigerian universities can cultivate inclusive cultures that advance academic achievement and institutional performance. The Impact of Islam on Pre-Colonial Diplomatic Relations between the Sokoto Caliphate and Neighbouring States

    No full text
This research explores the influence of Islam on diplomatic interactions between the Sokoto Caliphate and its neighbouring states during the nineteenth century Jihad. The primary aim is to investigate how Islamic principles, legal frameworks, and scholarly connections influenced foreign relations, alliances, and conflict resolution between Sokoto and other Hausa land such as Zauzau, Kano, Rano, Katsina, Daura and other Hausa States. The study utilizes a qualitative historical approach, drawing upon primary materials including correspondence from the caliphate, chronicles from the emirates, and records from the Sokoto archives, alongside secondary literature from existing academic work. Textual and content analyses were performed to interpret diplomatic communications, religious decrees, and reports from emissaries in order to pinpoint Islamic tenets that guided diplomatic engagements. Results indicate that Islam acted not only as a spiritual foundation but also as a diplomatic tool that validated authority, governed warfare through the jihad concept, and enabled peaceful resolutions. Clerical intermediaries and written exchanges developed a shared diplomatic language, while a common Islamic identity opened paths for forming alliances and negotiating autonomy. Nonetheless, in certain instances, religious principles were set aside in favour of political interests, as demonstrated by Sokoto’s practical interactions with non-Muslim neighbours. The conclusion highlights that Islam equipped the Sokoto Caliphate with both normative legitimacy and institutional mechanisms that transformed pre-colonial interstate dynamics in the central Sudan. The paper suggests that modern African nations reconsider the ethical aspects of Islamic diplomatic traditions such as justice, accountability, and peaceful conflict resolution to enhance contemporary methods of resolving disputes, fostering regional cooperation, and engaging in interfaith dialogue. No full text
Academic performance is a critical determinant of student success and overall educational outcomes. Understanding the factors that influence academic achievement is essential for developing effective strategies to improve educational practices and support student success. This study investigated the influence of emotional regulation, peer influence, parenting styles, social support, and socio-economic status on academic performance among secondary school students in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. Using a quantitative research design, the study involved 420 students from different academic streams (Science, Arts, and Commercial) in Senior Secondary 2 (SS2). A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to ensure a diverse and representative sample. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires, and academic performance data were obtained from school records. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to analyse the relationships between these factors and academic performance. The results indicated a significant predictive relationship between emotional regulation, peer influence, parenting styles, social support, socio-economic status, and academic performance. Specifically, emotional regulation had a moderate positive relationship with academic performance (β = 0.45, p = 0.001), while peer influence also showed a significant positive effect (β = 0.32, p = 0.002). Parenting styles and social support were both found to significantly influence academic performance, with estimates of β = 0.28 (p = 0.002) and β = 0.40 (p = 0.001), respectively. Additionally, socio-economic status (SES) was a significant predictor of academic success, with a positive relationship (β = 0.35, p = 0.000). Furthermore, the study found a significant interaction between these factors, which suggests that academic performance cannot be attributed to one factor alone but is instead shaped by the combined effects of emotional regulation, peer influence, parenting, social support, and socio-economic factors. The findings highlight the importance of considering the complex interplay of these variables in promoting academic success. This study provides important insights for educators, policymakers, and parents, particularly in socio-economically disadvantaged regions, and underscores the need for a holistic approach to addressing the factors that contribute to academic achievement in secondary education. Get PDF
The question of peaceful coexistence between Nigeria's various ethnic groups has been debated since the country's inception. Nigeria has experienced a number of political, economic, and ethnic crises that have caused ethnic divisions and disparities among its citizens, which have fueled rivalries because of the unequal distribution of the country's resources, which is the result of elite group manipulation of power. The article takes an analytical approach and applies the critical analysis tool to analyze political instability and ethnic crises in modern-day Nigeria. Viewed in the context of the numerous instances of injustice and unjust treatment experienced by the marginalized, disadvantaged, and vulnerable ethnic groups in Nigerian society by the governing class, the ethnic crises become more compelling. The results showed that one of the problems affecting Nigeria's stability as a country is ethnic conflicts. This research is founded on this idea. Following Amartya Sen's concept of justice will put an end to ethnic tensions. Through the realization process, human reason is able to distinguish between justice and injustice through Amartya Sen's Niti and Nyaya. The article came to the result that economic loss and rivalry between different ethnic groups have resulted from ethnic crises. Amarya Sen's Niti and Nyaya may be used by modern Nigeria to stop ethnic tensions, and public reasoning can abolish injustice among the country's many ethnic groups.
