Symbolic Interactionism and Feminist Readings of Women in Igbo Folktales

    No full text
Gender discourse has assumed a prominent position in contemporary African scholarship, with many scholars attributing women’s challenges to entrenched patriarchal ideologies within African societies. In Igboland, these perspectives often highlight male dominance as the root cause of female marginalization. However, this study re-examines women’s representations in Igbo folktales to uncover other underlying factors contributing to women’s experiences beyond patriarchy. Anchored on feminist literary theory, Principle of Female Mortification and symbolic interactionism, the paper investigates how women’s portrayals in selected Igbo folktales reflect individual agency, internalized gender dynamics, and social attitudes that sometimes perpetuate female subjugation. The study adopts a qualitative research design, employing purposive sampling to select and analyze relevant folktales from written anthologies. Through critical textual and thematic analysis, the findings reveal that while patriarchal structures influence women’s conditions, certain negative experiences are also self-engendered through women’s complicity, rivalry, and moral failings as depicted in the tales. These narratives illustrate that Igbo oral tradition serves both as a mirror and a moral compass, using storytelling to instruct, critique, and reform social behavior. The study concludes that meaningful gender transformation in Igbo society requires a dual approach: confronting structural patriarchy while encouraging individual introspection, self-assessment, and moral mortification among women. It recommends renewed attention to folktales as educational tools for promoting self-awareness, mutual respect, and societal harmony. Climate change undoubtedly is a pressing global issue which requires immediate attention and collective action. It is believed that youth can play a vital role in promoting sustainability and advocating for climate action. This is the motivation for the study as it x-rayed the impact of youth advocacy and pedagogical instructions on climate sustainability. The study examined the importance of education in empowering youth to contribute to sustainable development efforts. Adopting the theoretical framework of Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory and Jack Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory, the research emphasized the role of education in shaping youth's attitudes, behaviours, and actions towards climate sustainability. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted using a systematic review methodology which showed the need for curriculum revisions that centred on Indigenous knowledges, integrated climate justice, and the upholding of relationality to the land. The findings suggested that pedagogical instructions enhanced climate sustainability by equipping youth with appropriate knowledge, skills, and platforms to engage in climate action initiatives. Youth advocacy conclusively, is expected to promote policy changes, community engagement, and sustainable practices while mitigating the impact of climate change.  As an imperative therefore, the holistic and inclusive approach to climate education should foster a generation of climate-conscious and empowered youth who can contribute to a more sustainable future for all. During the last decade, Nigeria has been exhibiting rapid increase in human population and vehicular traffic, and increase in road traffic accidents. Regrettably, incessant deviant driving behaviour of public transport drivers is worrisome. This study examines the driving behaviour of commercial drivers and public transport safety in Lagos metropolis. The study employed survey research design. Five motor parks were selected for the investigation, where a total of 68 structured questionnaires were administered to commercial drivers in five (5) selected motor parks in the metropolis. Analysis of Variance and Multiple Regression Analyses were used to explain the research hypotheses at 5% level of significance. The results of the study showed a significant variation (F= 3.175, p= 0.05) among determinants of driving behaviuor of commercial drivers in Lagos metropolis, Nigeria. Age of the Driver (β= .270, t= 8.100) and Type of Vehicle (β= .116, t= 2.208) are driving behaviour of commercial drivers that significantly influence driving experience profile, while License Status (β= .006, t= .175) and Education (β= -.026, t= -.712) have no significant influence on driving experience profile. The result also indicates that driving behaviour of commercial drivers contributed about 33.4% (R2= 0.334%) to driving experience profile in the metropolis. It was concluded that improved driver behaviour can be an effective countermeasure to reduce the vulnerability of road users and inhibit crash risks. It is therefore recommended adherence to road traffic safety driving rules and enforcement measures. Keywords: Licensing, Driving, Behaviour, Public Transport, Road Safet

This study investigated the relationships between childhood trauma, peer pressure, social media usage, and delinquent career choice among youths aged 15 to 24 years in Ibadan, Nigeria. A purposive sample of 200 participants was drawn from correctional centres, rehabilitation homes, and selected secondary schools to examine the psychosocial factors influencing vocational deviance. Using Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses, the study found significant positive associations among childhood trauma, peer pressure, social media usage, and delinquent career orientation. Peer pressure emerged as the strongest predictor, followed by childhood trauma, while social media usage showed a smaller yet significant effect. The combined model explained 41.2% of the variance in delinquent career choice, highlighting the complex interplay of individual and social influences on youth behaviour. These findings underscore the need for integrated intervention programmes that address trauma, peer dynamics, and digital contexts to effectively mitigate delinquent pathways. The study also highlights implications for trauma-informed care and social skills training in rehabilitation and educational settings. Limitations related to sampling methods and cross-sectional design are acknowledged, with recommendations for longitudinal research and broader population samples to deepen understanding of these relationships. This research contributes to the growing literature on multifactorial determinants of youth delinquency in the Nigerian context, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and mental health practitioners. This study evaluates the operational characteristics of petroleum products distribution in Lagos state. The study utilised a systematic-random sampling which was used to select 1,000 tanker drivers. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used to evaluate the operational characteristics of petroleum distribution, including factors like the volume of products transported, travel distances, and route preferences. Findings from this study reveals that majority of drivers operate high-capacity tankers (45,000 litres, 41.4%), and that 45.9% of drivers work over 12 hours daily, raising concerns about fatigue, safety, and the need for regulatory enforcement of work-hour limits. Moreover, the low frequency of trips, with 63.7% of drivers completing only 1–2 trips weekly, suggests inefficiencies and delays in deliveries that could be mitigated through better scheduling and reduced downtime at depots. The analysis also shows that 59.2% of drivers operate outside Lagos, indicating a significant portion of the distribution network extends beyond the state, adding complexities such as longer delivery times and higher transport costs. Operational characteristics of petroleum product distribution showed that high-capacity tankers, long working hours, and low-trip frequencies dominate the petroleum logistics landscape in Lagos State. These factors contribute to inefficiencies and safety risks, requiring better scheduling, work-hour regulation, and investment in inter-modal means. This study thus recommended that policymakers should establish formal training centres, provide subsidies for low-income drivers, and develop gender-inclusive policies to encourage female participation in the sector. Training programs should focus on safety protocols, vehicle maintenance, and regulatory compliance to improve operational efficiency. A Highlight of Henry Venn’s Innovation in Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Poverty Eradication Programme in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The processes of impoverishment that mainly underpin poverty are underscored in many critical aspects of deprivation engendered by lack of access to resources for dignified livelihoods (natural, material and financial), health burden precipitated by inadequate access to good health facilities; poor housing and lack of basic services i.e., the basic necessities of life and powerlessness to mention few. More often than not, the aforementioned impinged extensively on the poor because they limit people’s access to income-earning opportunities, basic necessities of life, and resources which ultimately undermined the fulfilment of their civil, socio-political, and economic and resource- use rights. Unfortunately, it is an attempt to forestall this encroachment that Henry Venn, the British Missionary Church co-founder in his “Instruction to Missionaries” presents certain principles that will enhance economic viability and financial independence. This endeavour is a far-reaching Church-based entrepreneurial innovation that is embedded with the potential of curtailing poverty and emancipate the impoverished and the society at large for social and global sustainable development. To this extent, we shall do a rapprochement into Venn’s concept of Church-based entrepreneurship programme in the light of its viability for a sustainable global development. We engaged the tool of historical and analytical method in data analysis. We conclude that, Church-based entrepreneurial enterprise is a viable engagement; and with illustrations from some selected churches on their entrepreneurial activities in Nigeria, it is obvious that Henry Venn’s 18th century innovation is classic and pivotal to sustainable global development in the 21st century.
