    Incorporating social spatial data in sustainable management: Mapping tourism-recreational activities of locals and tourists in Hood Canal, Washington using ArcGIS.

    Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2014The Hood Canal watershed is a saltwater fjord that provides ample and diverse opportunities for tourism and recreational activities such as camping, boating, shellfishing, swimming, and hiking. The current tourism literature does not have a strong focus on local recreation trends and whether locals partake in different recreational activities than tourists who visit the same region. In order to address this gap, I collected and analyzed social spatial data using an online map survey to understand the activities of Hood Canal locals and people who visit the region. InSEAM, an online tool, was used to test if this method is useful in gathering spatial data. The survey asked various demographic questions and perception questions about the health of the Hood Canal and the impact of tourism-recreational activities. On the actual map, participants drew polygons, lines or points to represent locations of where they enjoy tourism/recreational activities. I recoded the data into seven larger categories and analyzed using ArcGIS and a Pearson 2 test. Non-motorized shore activities accounted for the most activities done in Hood Canal. Results show there are differences among the types of activities locals and tourists participated in as well as in their perception of how their activities impacted the overall health of the Hood Canal. InSEAM was effective in collecting data stored in GIS format and removed the need to digitize paper maps or convert them into GIS formats. It provided a simple way to engage stakeholders by allowing them to complete the survey at their convenience. To make the tool more effective, educational information about mapping should be sent out to users beforehand. The results provide tourism brokers, local residents, tourists and managers with visual representations of how the watershed is being used for recreation and tourism purposes by locals and by tourists

    Defining Co-Management: Levels of Collaboration in Fisheries Management

    Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2014Involving stakeholders in natural resource management offers both normative and objective benefits, and co-management is a much-studied topic. However, the definition of `co-management' remains vague and incomplete. This thesis develops a definition of co-management that is specific enough to be analytically rigorous and useful, while still maintaining the flexibility necessary to accommodate the diversity of co-management arrangements that can exist. Analysis of the literature on co-management and case studies of collaborative management allowed the development of a matrix containing sixteen variables, each along a spectrum from consultation to co-management, that describe the elements of a co-management arrangement. Testing the matrix on three cases studies labeled as `co-management' revealed the utility of the matrix in testing for the presence or lack thereof of co-management and demonstrated the ways the matrix can be used in the future to compare cases and categorize the level of completeness of a co-management arrangement

    Accommodating the Nation: Hospitality and Citizenship in Nineteenth-Century German Literature

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2014This dissertation investigates the ways nineteenth-century German literature imagines nationality by examining metaphors and structures of hospitality. This examination is twofold: it takes as its subject hospitality narratives and narrative hospitality. By hospitality narratives, I mean the semantic aspect of texts that figure the hospitable gathering as a metaphor for the national community. By narrative hospitality, I mean that the literary texts perform hospitality on the textual level by taking on the characteristics of hosts, guests, and the spaces they assemble. The first three chapters examine how entertainment, taste, and ritual both unite and estrange members of a national community in Goethe's Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten, E.T.A. Hoffmann's "Der unheimliche Gast," Clemens Brentano's Die mehreren Wehmüller, Achim von Arnim's Isabella von Ägypten, Heinrich Heine's Deutschland: Ein Wintermärchen, and Adalbert Stifter's "Der Kuß von Sentze." The fourth and fifth chapters argue that the figures of the hostess, the host, and the guest in Louise von François's "Der Posten der Frau," Eugenie Marlitt's Im Hause des Kommerzienrates, Theodor Storm's Der Schimmelreiter, and Theodor Fontane's Der Stechlin function as providers, recipients, and transmitters of narratives that potentially unite the members of an internally fragmented nation. Taken together, the texts function as sites where the idea of the German national community is both enacted and critiqued; they furnish a space where nationality as a category of belonging is at once welcomed and challenged

    Educate Yourselves: Three Cases of Civic Education in King County Environmental Initiatives

    The state of Washington, and King County in particular, have a reputation for vocal public concern over issues of the environment, and a quick look at popular ballot initiatives in the state over the last half-century supports the stereotype. But most recent initiatives to the people concerning environmental issues have not fared on the ballot in a way that reflected support for conservationist policy. The inquiry driving this paper arose from the failure of one such ballot initiative, and the claim that citizens who voted “wrongly” could easily have “educated themselves” about the issue and voted otherwise. This paper argues that the people of King County have repeatedly received inadequate educational resources about the ecological issues at stake in local politics. The lack of such resources may have helped special or regional interests overpower collective interests in decisions on these measures

    Fabrication and Characterization of Nanostructured Oxides for Energy Storage

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2014Materials for energy storage have become increasingly important in the modern world as alternatives to petrochemical energy sources. Although technology such as lithium-ion batteries and solid oxide fuel cells are in commercial use, improvements must still be made to increase widespread adoption. To this end, nanostructured materials have emerged as potentially impactful solutions, as they can greatly improve the performance of the energy storage device. One goal of this dissertation was to fabricate nanostructured materials through solution-based processing, electrospinning, and controlled annealing for lithium-ion battery electrodes. This project resulted in the formation of porous fibers from inexpensive, nontoxic materials that can be used as high capacity electrodes. Another component of this dissertation was to deposit thin film noble metals and metal oxides via sputtering for metal-air battery cathodes. The results from these experiments indicate that nanostructured thin films could have improved catalytic activity compared to polycrystalline bulk structures, and also were lower cost due to the decrease in material used. The other major portion of this dissertation was to study the fundamental behavior of nanostructured materials for energy storage at a localized level using electrochemical strain microscopy, a technique that is still in its infancy. The measured responses using electrochemical strain microscopy tended to be difficult to interpret, as they contained many different chemical and mechanical contributions. A series of experiments were devised to distinguish among the different mechanisms, comparing differing responses from Vegard strain, ferroelectric behavior, and electrostrictive effects. Given this framework, inhomogeneous lithium iron phosphate was characterized using electrochemical strain microscopy. From these results, it was found that nanocrystalline particles had higher lithium ion diffusivity as compared to microcrystalline particles, which correlates with macroscopic electrochemical performance. Furthermore, this technique could be applied to measure local lithium ion concentration in samples at different states of charge. Electrochemical strain microscopy was also applied to study samarium doped ceria, a solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte. In this case, the measured behavior was found to be due to the motion of small polarons, supporting the space-charge model of mixed ionic and electronic conductivity in nanostructured electrolytes. Electrochemical strain microscopy was found to be a strong and versatile technique that can fundamentally characterize local behavior of ions, vacancies, electrons, and holes in an energy storage material, and can guide future research in this area

    A population genetics study of the wood-boring bivalve, Xylophaga washingtona, from wood-fall experiments along OR and WA, USA

    A widely distributed species of wood-boring bivalve, Xylophaga washingtona, was collected from three sites along the Washington-Oregon margin and assessed with molecular techniques. 16S gene sequences revealed low differentiation between individuals from the two sites on the outer continental slope suggesting that these sites harbor a single population. However, greater genetic distance was observed between the slope individuals and those collected from a shallow-water site in the San Juan Islands, Washington. These results suggest the presence of at least two distinct populations of Xylophaga washingtona along the Washington-Oregon margin and the potential for species-level differences. The juxtaposition of the two hydrographic settings supports the hypothesis that isolation of the shallow-water population has resulted in sufficient genetic differentiation over fairly short geographic distances. Further research is needed to verify these observed patterns and to explore whether morphological differences support the proposed population and species structure

    Sediment dispersal and accumulation in an insular sea: deltas of Puget Sound

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2014Small rivers carry several million tons of sediment annually into Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Once delivered to the marine environment, processes in the water column and on the seabed dictate dispersal, deposition and accumulation of these particles. To investigate these mechanisms, water-column measurements, including long-term bottom-boundary-layer time-series, water-column profiles and shipboard velocity, and seabed sampling, such as sediment cores, multibeam bathymetry and seismic reflection profiling, were collected from 2007-2009 on the Elwha and Skagit River deltas. Tidal currents at both study sites were strong and capable of dispersing muds to more distal portions of the delta. At the Skagit delta the intertidal topset had strong ebb tidal currents that exported most of the Skagit River mud rapidly beyond the topset. The mud found on the flat was limited spatially, near channels and at the outer flat edge and temporally, following high discharge. Physical processes drive shear stresses that act on the seabed to mobilize sands and muds and rework the seabed at various frequencies and depths: on a semi-diurnal tidal timescale, both channel and flat seabeds are reworked to 1-2 cm; and over a decadal timescale, lateral channel migration acts to rework the seabed to 1-2 m, making the limited mud deposits available for export. The Skagit muds were rapidly transported > 10 km into two distinct distal basins; southward within the deep quiescent basin of Saratoga Passage mud accumulates up to 10 mm y-1 for a total of ~0.5 MT annually, and northward within the high-energy unconstrained basin of Rosario Strait some mud accumulates in small local deposits, but much is likely broadly dispersed. Throughout Puget Sound deltas typically form bay head (muddy progradation) or sidewall (broad mud dispersal), and the Skagit River dispersal system has both characteristics. The Elwha River delta is a coarse-grained sidewall delta and tidal currents act to broadly disperse muds. Over the past 10,000 years the dominant sediment sinks have shifted from foreset beds to alongshore spits. This was likely related to variations in sea level as a result of deglaciation and sediment supply. As sea-level rise slowed slightly, wave-driven longshore transport began to actively shape delta morphology and created paleospits, which formed successively one at a time, stepwise as sea-level rose. These sediment sinks were formed under similar processes as the modern spit, Ediz Hook. It is shown that deltas in insular seas can form complex deposits, and this has implications for interpreting the geologic record in areas of constrained basins. In the modern environment, basin morphology and tidal currents determine accumulation patterns. Over longer timescales, the effects of previous glaciations have a major role in delta evolution

    Moving towards Neoliberal(izing) Urban Space? Housing and Residential Segregation in Beijing

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2014This dissertation examines China's urban housing system in the reform era and its social and spatial changes in Beijing. This dissertation seeks to understand the nature of China's reform and its socio-spatial ramifications, and challenges the convergence thesis that China's reform is necessarily following the footsteps of those advanced capitalist cities. Using Beijing as a case, this dissertation examines the relationship between the state, society and the urban development. This dissertation particularly focuses on housing inequality and residential segregation in Beijing metropolitan area in the reform era. Examining of the behavior of state in urban housing system reveals that the different goals of Beijing municipal government and the central government explain the different fates of different types of housing in the new urban housing system of Beijing. Instead of retreating from the market as neoliberalism thesis suggests, the municipal government of Beijing was actively involved in the housing system and took advantage of hukou, a socialist institution to achieve its goal of "accumulation through dispossession" at the expenses of ordinary citizens. Based on the analysis of various urban groups' housing behavior, this dissertation shows that although being self-reliant for one's own housing became the hegemonic discourse during the reform, this subjugation only applies to some of the urban residents, such as migrant workers who were institutionally excluded from any urban welfare. In contrast, residents who have political power or guanxi are "exceptions to neoliberalism". Based on Beijing metropolitan area boundary delineated by Chan and Forstall and data from 2000 population census of Beijing, this dissertation reveals that employees working in "monopoly" sectors and governmental organizations consistently had better housing than their counterparts in the private sector. Hukou remains a powerful institution in determining Beijing residents' access to housing. In addition, based on all examination of spatial distribution and residential segregation of various social groups, this dissertation shows that not only did the disadvantageous groups mostly concentrated in the outer suburbs have poor living conditions, but also they had high level of segregation there. The institutionally created housing inequality is not only social and economic, but spatial as well. Overall, this dissertation argues that China is not neoliberal in nature. The examination of the state, the urban residents and the social space in terms of the new housing system shows that neoliberalism has not been a dominant ideology in Chinese society. Neoliberalism as policy-based practices is not implemented by either the central government or local government. Neoliberalism as geovernmentality is not applied to those without any political power and outside the public sector
