The Role of Competitors and Customers in the Development of Environmentally Sound Technologies

    Get PDF
The article presents two important forces influencing the development of product innovations by suppliers of environmentally sound technologies, namely competitors and consumers. It discusses these phenomena on the basis of different theoretical approaches (Ansoff and Stewart, 1967; Von Hippel, 1987, 2005, 2007; Prahalad and Ramaswamy, 2004). The results of the study show that Polish companies-suppliers of environmentally sound technologies are willing to gain inspiration from both demand and supply side market players. In case of supply side of the market, in most cases inspiration was not aimed at copying existing successful ideas. The competitors are perceived rather as a source of inspiration for further development of technological solutions. Although companies concentrate on having a relationship with customers and track their behavior, these relations have not been established by the Polish companies researched here in order to treat users as co-creators of product improvements or novelties. Praca omawia te zjawiska na bazie rozmaitych podejść teoretycznych (Ansoff i Stewart, 1967; Von Hippel, 1987, 2005, 2007; Prahalad and Ramaswamy, 2004).

Innowatyka - nowy horyzont : innowacyjność naukowców, przedsiębiorców, menedżerów i urzędników

The Patents and Financial Performance of Firms - Evidence From Polish Manufacturing Companies

    Get PDF
This article is a contribution to the discussion on innovation activity and its influence on financial performance of companies. The authors employ a simple measure of innovativeness, which was also used in other studies, and the division of companies into two groups (innovative and non-innovative) was based on the fact whether they obtained a patent (patents) or not. In this paper, we compare the rates of return and revenue growth achieved by innovative versus non-innovative companies operating in the manufacturing industry in Poland, in the years 2006 to 2012. Financial and qualitative data for testing the hypotheses were taken from the Amadeus database provided by Bureau van Dijk. The sample consisted of 4004 enterprises, of which 681 were owners of at least one patent. T-Student test, ANOVA and OSL models were used to verify the working assumptions. The study tests the following three research hypotheses. H1: “Innovative companies achieve higher rates of return than the noninnovative ones.” That hypothesis was confirmed in relation to the EBITDA margin and ROS (return on sale), but not to ROA (return on assets) and ROE (return on equity). The fact of belonging to a group of innovative companies had an impact on an average EBITDA margin increase by 0.83 p.p. in 2007, 0.78 p.p. in 2009 and 0.73 p.p. in 2012, ceteris paribus. The difference between ROE was found statistically insignificant in most analysed periods (except 2007 and 2009), however, non-innovative companies have achieved a higher return on equity than innovative companies. It can be associated with higher operational risk in innovative companies which restrict access to external capital, leading such companies to expand their businesses through their own equity. The second tested hypothesis is: “An innovative activity has higher impact on financial performance in medium-sized companies than in large and very large ones.” During the research, it was found out that having obtained a patent is important determinant of EBITDA margin for medium-sized companies, increasing it by 0.76 p.p., ceteris paribus. In large companies, it contributed to an increase of 0.71 p.p., and for very large ones – by only 0.19 p.p., with the slope for the latter group at a number other than zero found to be statistically insignificant. In relation to third tested hypothesis:” Innovative companies are more sensitive in terms of revenue dynamics to economic slowdown than the non-innovative ones.” it was found out that in the period of time from 2006 to 2012 the dynamics of revenue growth in innovative companies was generally higher than in the non-innovative ones, except in the year 2009, when all companies showed a significant decline in revenues, but for innovative companies, the decline amounted to 6.39%, and for the remaining ones it was found at 4.98%. Based on those findings it was confirmed that innovative companies are characterized by a greater sensitivity to economic slowdown.

Openminder, czyli urządzenie do otwierania klapek w głowie

The Principles of Implementing Early Recognition Systems in an Organization

    Get PDF
In the context of the turbulent environment, contemporary organizations have to work out and implement tools enabling them to handle the turbulence, and primarily, to avoid negative consequences of these processes. The tools are related, among others, to obtaining and providing managers, sufficiently in advance, with adequate management information on the environment. Early Recognition Systems (ERS) are a response to such conditions of the organization functioning and the challenge in respect of information support for decision-making processes. Unfortunately, they are mainly of informalized character, dispersed on various levels and in various functional areas of organizations, and very often based on unconscious, habitual actions, and, in consequence, their advancement and effectiveness are low. Based on the main characteristics of early recognition systems, the article presents the framework procedure of systemic solutions in the area of early recognition, which is supposed to enable formally organized activities within this scope

The Effectiveness of the Leniency Program in Combating Cartel Agreements in Poland

    Get PDF
The Leniency program that has been analyzed raises the question concerning its effectiveness in fighting with the cartel agreements and whether it encourages the participants of the cartel enough to betray other participants of the cartel agreement. Examining such effectiveness is hard enough because of the secret character of functioning of cartels themselves and, in fact, it is not known how many cartel agreements exist in the Polish economy. The aim of the article is to analyze the effectiveness of methods of combating anticompetitive agreements such as cartels through mechanisms of the Leniency program. The intention of the Author is to make an attempt at researching the construction of the Leniency program itself and then, basing on the analysis of documents and reports of the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection, researching the rate of cartel agreements from 2005 to 2012

    No full text
Praca porusza zagadnienia związane z etyką w biznesie, przede wszystkim w kontekście wykorzystania jej do budowania trwałej, dającej się obronić w dłuższym okresie czasu przewagi konkurencyjnej. The thesis raises an issue of ethics in business, especially as a tool to build a sustainable and long-term competitive advantage. The main goal of this thesis and a survey was to verify the need and usefulness of ethics in building competitive advantage of the company. The study was based on secondary sources (mainly the Internet, books and magazines) and primary sources (the survey). In the first two chapters there are theoretical considerations regarding ethics, competitiveness and competitive advantage. The next two chapters contain a description of the companies PKN Orlen S.A. and Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. These last two chapters also present empirical research concerning the nature of the activities of these organizations in the context of business ethics. This study presents the benefits of ethical business for a company and its environment. It also draws attention to risks arising from the lack of ethics in business, which proves that business ethics is necessary in economic activity. We can conclude that business ethics is an excellent tool for building sustainable competitive advantage. Especially the stages of building a sustainable ethical culture of the company are important and they are the basis for success based on business ethics
