The Necessity of Redefining the Principles of Process Management

    Get PDF
The rapid development of process management and its practical uses stems from the changing conditions of business, which are the result of overlapping and mutually stimulating changes in business culture, social conventions, the development of information and communication technologies, as well as the process of globalization and changes in the principles of competition themselves. For several years now it has become apparent that practical methodologies and IT systems supporting the implementation and use of process management in organizations are developing at a much more rapid pace than their theoretical underpinnings. The 3rd wave of development of process management, which has been initiated around the year 2003, is becoming increasingly less responsive to the requirements of modern business. The first aim of this article is to stress the need for further theoretical reflection on traditional process management, which due to changes in the paradigms of the knowledge economy may be used in the case of a mere 20%-30% of the processes within the organization. The second aim of the article is to showcase the direction and the characteristics of the 4th wave of process management, which mostly stem from practical solutions. The article presents the development of BPMS and CMS systems and the implementation methodologies which use them, showing how both are becoming closer to one another, or rather, how both are turning in the direction brought about by the needs of the clients. This development has a fundamental significance for practitioners dealing with the preparation of tools and the implementation of methodologies pertaining to process management and knowledge management within organizations, by defining the direction of further development for both their systems and services. At the same time, it allows scholars researching process management to analyze and, if the need arises, introduce corrections to the concept of the 4th wave of BPM, as well as make insights into the effects of the change, which, for all intents and purposes, is ongoing

Risk Management Model in the Formulation Phase of the Technological Project

    Get PDF
In the 2014-2020 perspective, the calls for proposals are mainly directed to the entrepreneurs. It provokes the necessity to prepare the project applications to the consulting company by the entrepreneurs themselves or to sub-contract it. However, the preparation of the proposals by the applicants is more rationale, because they know best what will be developed and how to justify it. On the other hand, while writing the applications, it is indispensable to consider all risks that might happen during the preparation process and which can influence the further phases of the project execution. The author of the article presents the theoretical background how risk can be managed. The main aim of this article is to design the model for risk management, which is dedicated to the formulation phase of the technological project. In the process of the model design, the author used direct interview and modelling methods. The application of this model enables the entrepreneurs to prepare the project application with all necessary aspects taken into consideration, which should be fulfilled; otherwise, the project application can be rejected

Dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities: The case of the ‘Innovation Clinic’

    Get PDF
In this explorative study, we investigate the relationship between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Dynamic capabilities are at the core of strategic management in terms of how firms can ensure adaptation to changing environments over time. Our paper follows two paths of argumentation. First, we review and discuss some major contributions to the theories on ordinary capabilities, dynamic capabilities, and innovation capabilities. We seek to identify different understandings of the concepts in question, in order to clarify the distinctions and relationships between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Second, we present a case study of the ’Innovation Clinic’ at a major university hospital, including four innovation projects. We use this case study to explore and discuss how dynamic capabilities can be extended, as well as to what extent innovation capabilities can be said to be dynamic. In our conclusion, we discuss the conditions for nurturing ‘dynamic innovation capabilities’ in organizations

Partner Capabilities and Alliance Time Frame: An Analysis of International Strategic Alliances from the CEE

    Get PDF
Partner selection is one of the most discussed issues in strategic alliances literature. However, the majority of research has typically focused on generic partner characteristics and presented conceptual models for alliance partner selection, addressing clan image but only limited pieces of the partner selection puzzle. Rooted in the resource-based view, this paper suggests that partner selection is contingent upon the intended time frame of strategic alliances and presents a new and intensive conceptual framework that examines the appropriate partner capability for strategic alliances, in the case of short/medium-term alliances and long-term ones. Based on empirical evidences from 736 alliances in the CEE region, the findings stress the differences between varied partner capabilities in short/medium-term and long-term alliances. Accordingly, the significance of technological capability increases with the number of year’s alliances endured. Moreover, the importance of market capability decreases significantly when alliances last for a longer time frame

User Innovation: State of the Art and Perspectives for Future Research

    Get PDF
Given the rising role of users in innovation processes and the increasing amount of research in this field the aim of this paper is to explore the limits of our understanding of the user innovation (UI) concept. In doing so, the study addresses four basic questions: (1) Why do users create and share innovation? (2) Who is the user-innovator? (3) What type of innovation do users create? (4) How do users innovate? The results of a systematic literature review identified the main research streams on user innovation, together with weaknesses of past research and perspectives for future studies

The Role of Organizational Culture in Knowledge Management in Small Companies

    Get PDF
Organizational culture is an important factor influencing knowledge management processes in small companies. Small entities usually have limited resources, both human and financial, to be able to develop advanced knowledge management systems. However, little research has been done so far to investigate the characteristics of organizational culture in small companies, in terms of knowledge management processes. Therefore, the aim of this research is the examination of organizational culture in small Polish companies with the application of a symbolic-interpretive perspective

Use of the Internet and its Impact on Productivity and Sales Growth in Female-Owned Firms: Evidence from India

    Get PDF
The Internet has completely transformed our lives on an individual basis in many ways, ranging from the way we communicate through the way we socialize to the way we shop and travel. Businesses are no exception to this premise. This paper studies the adoption of the Internet by female-owned firms in India. It uses the World Bank’s Enterprise Surveys Program data set for the year 2014 to study the adoption of the Internet by more than 10,000 firms in the country. After controlling for a large number of firm-level characteristics, empirical results obtained indicate that female-owned firms are more likely to use the Internet than their male counterparts. However, further empirical analysis shows that more intensive adoption of the Internet by these female-owned firms does not necessarily translate into better performance. Specifically, the adoption of the Internet does not make female-owned firms more or less likely to have better productivity and sales growth in contrast to that of their male counterparts

Money Talks: Communication Patterns as Knowledge Monetization

    Get PDF
In this conceptual paper, we suggest that knowledge flows constitute the antecedences of value creation by means of its communication component. Knowledge is increasingly being accepted as a source of value creation and a differentiator between firms. However, to a large extent, current approaches to management and governance of knowledge resources prescribe measurements of the stock of knowledge. Therefore, we suggest a bridge that connects current knowledge sharing understanding with properties from communication theory, to explicate knowledge in use through a communication patterns perspective. Building on the perspective of knowledge as a flow, and postulating that value is based on knowledge use, rather than knowledge possession, this paper addresses the research question: How can we express knowledge in such a way that it can be monetized and made accessible to specific managerial interventions? We explain how communication is instrumental in capturing knowledge value and allows for a connection with monetary value. Extant literature on organizational communication roles emphasizes the role of boundary-spanners in the search for and combination of experience and tacit knowledge. Individual nodes in organizational networks can possess knowledge. However, to be valuable, the knowledge resources need to be deployed and utilized. The use of knowledge will involve the communication of this knowledge through ties to other nodes. The paper proposes that boundary-spanning roles provide a focal point for such monetization efforts. The contribution of this paper is six propositions for future research on how management accounting and control systems can be brought to bear in their governable and calculable aspects if communication functions are given more attention
