(B)ordering, Identity and Agency: Toward Rehumanisation in Mobility
This thesis investigates the concept of agency through narrations, by examining the question of how the participants express their agency throughout their mobilities and cross border-experiences. The study’s epistemological and theoretical underpinnings are post-structural, with several influences from thinkers in Sociology, Social Psychology, and Human Geography. It adopts a case study approach focused on individuals from Syria, irrespective of visa status residing in the Netherlands and Germany. Utilising the Biographical Narrative Method, unstructured interviews offer flexibility and enable a balanced dynamic between interviewer and interviewee. By considering people as the experts of their own experience, this study examines the perspectives of everyday people while exploring broader concepts. Inductive thematic analysis generates two subthemes grounded in participants’ narratives: “Identity”, capturing self-presentation and strategies of belonging, and “Crossroads” explores decision-making processes of navigating danger, precarity, and bureaucratic hurdles.
This study demonstrates that agency is dynamic and context-dependent, demonstrating the ongoing negotiation of perceptions of oneself in with their surroundings. By incorporating a more humane lens, social policy can recognise the fluidity and intersectionality of identities, creating opportunities to enhance integration and belonging. Such lens may also challenge reductive public perceptions, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of human migratory mobility
Financial distress and its effect on stock performance moderated by CEO ownership and CEO tenure
This research investigates how CEO characteristics impact reactions of the stock market in times of a profit warning issuance. Where existing literature extensively researched the influence of firm financials on performance, the knowledge about signals perceived by investors from CEO characteristics and stock market performance during financial distress remain limited.
The study analyzes publicly listed firms that issued a profit warning between 1-1-2021 and 31-12-2024. This excludes the corona-crisis and comes down to an N of 111. Cumulative Abnormal Return represents stock performance, CEO ownership and CEO tenure within the specific firm were used as moderators. Firm size, firm age, industry, CEO gender, and CEO duality were added to the model in order to conduct a multiple linear regression analysis. In order to process the data better, some variables have undergone a log-transformation. To prevent data loss within the limited sample, the CEO ownership variable is converted to a binary indicator through dummy coding.
The results show a portion of variance explained by CEO and firm characteristics. CEO tenure within a company positively affects CAR. CEO ownership showed no significant impact on CAR.
These results contribute to literature about executives and their role in times of financial distress. Moreover, these findings may be useful for executives, investors, and boards to better grasp how firm leadership impacts market reactions. Suggestions for future research entail a larger and more diversified sample and the addition of more granular data on CEO ownership in order to possibly find more significant impact and to be able to create more generalizability
Safety perceptions on gendered public transportation choices
Public transportation safety is a critical component of urban mobility, particularly for women, who often report higher levels of insecurity while using these services. This study investigates which safety-related factors women consider most influential in shaping their perceptions of safety in public transport in Nijmegen. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative survey data from 157 women with qualitative insights from expert interviews with a municipal policy advisor and a city councillor.
The findings indicate that infrastructure-related factors, particularly lighting and the visible presence of staff, have the strongest influence on women’s perceived safety. Among demographic variables, education level emerged as the most significant, indirectly affecting safety perceptions through various mediating factors such as lighting conditions, staff presence, cultural norms, time of day, and skin colour.
The results underscore the importance of gender-sensitive infrastructure planning, with practical implications including improved lighting and increased staff visibility in transit environments. Additionally, the study highlights the role of social dynamics in shaping safety experiences and calls for more attention to intersectional perspectives. Further research is recommended to deepen the understanding of how intersectional identities impact perceptions of safety and to inform the development of targeted, inclusive interventions
The Moderating Effect of sustainability-linked CEO Compensation on the Relationship Between ESG Scores, Firm Performance
In recent years, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) activities have become more common in business, aiming to build stakeholder trust and improve firm performance. One approach firms use is linking CEO compensation to sustainability goals, which may help improve ESG performance. However, it is still unclear whether this also improves financial performance. This study explores whether CEO compensation tied to sustainability influences the relationship between ESG performance (measured by ESG scores) and firm performance (measured by return on assets and return on equity). Because firm performance could also affect ESG scores, or both could be influenced by other factors, the study uses an instrumental variable (IV) regression method. Industry-average ESG scores and their interaction with CEO compensation are used as instruments to improve the reliability of the results. The findings show that while higher ESG scores do not always lead to better financial outcomes, firms with sustainability-linked CEO pay tend to perform better. Still, when ESG performance increases within those firms, it may reduce financial performance. This suggests that ESG goals need to be carefully aligned with business strategy to be financially effective
Pulling Yourself Up by the Bootstraps”: Fandom Self-Referentiality in Goncharov (1973) – A Case for Meta-Fanfiction
How fan audiences organise themselves differs as a result of the affordances of the platform on which they are operating. These differences allow for a multitude of distinct fandom works to be created, one of which is fanfiction. Just as is the case with other forms of fan creations, how fanfiction is written is largely dependent on the context in which it is written and the material and methods available to the writer(s). Fanfiction has academically long been considered a literary practice contingent on the existence of a concrete source text, often in the form of a fictive narrative or some form of (popular) media.
However, in the last few years, other examples of fan-made narratives have been put forward, which are not constructed with a source text as the narrative from which they are derived, such as the case with Goncharov meme on Tumblr. During the last few months of 2022, the Tumblr community came together to collectively create an imagined movie through jokingly insisting that the movie exists and pretending to be people who had seen the movie and commenting on the contents of the movie. I contend that the Goncharov meme challenges the academic understanding of fanfiction, which has been traditionally put forward by demonstrating how narratives can emerge from more abstract sources, such as the collective experience of minority fandom members, rather than a concrete source text in the form of a narrative with an established progression.
By introducing the concept of “meta-fanfiction”, this research aims to more concretely conceptualise the phenomenon occurring with Goncharov (1973) in which meta-references on how minority fandom members typically alter subtextual or lacklustre representation in fanfiction are transformed into creating the base narrative of Goncharov (1973), thus illustrating the evolving and reflexive nature of both fanfiction and how audience members relate to mainstream media. The concept of silosocilaity will be used to show that there is distinctiveness in how people on Tumblr operate, meaning that fandom on Tumblr does have self-awareness of their operational codes.
Through attention to how queer and female characters are represented in the Goncharov (1973), this research explores the research question: to what extent does the creation of Goncharov (1973) as fanfiction differ from how the creation of fanfiction has been academically described? I argue that Goncharov is fanfiction created by the Tumblr fandom that alters the definition of what fanfiction is beyond the focus which has been kept in academic discourse on fanfiction, in which the emphasis is on an already existent media text. The alternative is that people may draw upon their lived experiences as a foundation to

create fanfiction. The argument is substantiated through the analysis of three works of canon-compliant fanfiction derived from Goncharov (1973) as a source text, as well as one work of fan art also derived from Goncharov (1973).

The walkable neighbourhood. Understanding the influence of perceived walkability, place attachment and urban design on walking behaviour. A photovoice study in Nijmegen
This research focuses on the relationship between walking behaviour and three interrelated factors: perceived walkability, place attachment and urban design. This examines how people's perceptions of walkability and place attachment influence their walking behaviour, and in what way urban design shapes these perceptions, attachments and behaviour. To this end, the Theory of Planned behaviour is used to theoretically explain people's intentions and behaviour. A relatively new research method is applied for the study, namely Photovoice. This is a participatory research method in which participants themselves take pictures of their living environment. Photovoice helps uncover subjective experiences that are difficult to express in words. In this study, residents of Nijmegen East took photographs to provide insight into their walking behaviour and the factors that influence that behaviour. Additional interviews broadened and deepened the perspective. The results show that walking behaviour is influenced by how the environment is perceived and the degree of attachment to a place. Urban design plays a key role in facilitating and enhancing these perceptions and feelings. This research recommends the 4C (connected, comfortable, caring and captivating) tool to improve the walkability of an environment, with a focus on the human-centred approach in planning
