Building Circular Together: How Stakeholder Collaboration shapes Efficiency in Circular Construction A case study of a Dutch SME on stakeholder-driven efficiency in circular construction
The Dutch construction sector faces dual pressures: a huge housing shortage and ambitious national circularity targets. This thesis examines how collaboration between stakeholders during the implementation of Circular Economy (CE) principles influences the efficiency of a construction firm. Grounded in the stakeholder theory and by adopting a qualitative case study approach within a Dutch SME, this thesis explores how interactions with governmental actors, clients, and internal partners shape the firm’s economic, technical, and production efficiency.
The thesis’ findings indicate that stakeholder collaboration serves as an operational mechanism for overcoming complexities and challenges associated with CE. Public procurement, regulatory incentives and knowledge-sharing platforms play key roles in aligning sustainability goals with efficiency. The study contributes to literature by operationalizing stakeholder engagement in the context of CE transitions and highlights the pragmatic, context-dependent nature of circular construction in SMEs. The findings are also used to introduce some managerial implications for the case company
Driving continued participation after rejection How Message Framing and Future-Oriented Feedback Influence Perceived Fairness and Re-participation in Ideation Contests
In ideation contests, where rejection is common, and selection rates are low, the way feedback is framed plays an important role in maintaining long-term participant engagement. This study explores how rejection message framing and future-focused feedback influence perceived fairness and intention to participate in future ideation contests. A 2x2 between-subjects experiment (constructive vs. dismissive message framing X high vs low future-focus) was conducted with 160 participants.
The findings suggest that constructive message framing significantly increases both
perceived fairness and participation intention. Perceived fairness fully mediates the
relationship between message framing and future participation, emphasising its central role in how participants process rejection. While future-focused feedback had a small effect on
perceived fairness, its expected moderating role was not supported. This was likely caused by
conceptual overlap in the manipulations.
By treating rejection feedback as a distinct construct rather than a component of general
contest communication, this study contributes to ideation contest literature and offers practical insights for organisers. It highlights how tone and temporal orientation in feedback can shape fairness perceptions and supports the design of rejection feedback that encourages continued participation
Organizational Adoption Factors of Design for Recycling as Circular Business Model Innovation: A Multiple Case Study in the Heavy-Duty Industry
This thesis explores the organizational adoption of Design for Recycling (DFR) as a circular business model innovation within the heavy-duty industry. While circular business models are becoming increasingly important for sustainability, their adoption in capital-intensive industries comes with unique challenges. The central research question is: What factors determine the adoption of Design for Recycling as a circular business model innovation in the heavy-duty industry? Using an exploratory, multiple case study, three companies were examined through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate five key factors influencing the adoption of DFR: three internal factors (leadership commitment and strategic prioritization, DFR-specific knowledge and capabilities, and business case viability) and two external factors (regulatory pressure and end-of-life visibility). The research shows that the interpretation and adoption of DFR varies widely among companies depending on their strategic priorities and operational contexts. While proactive leadership, formalized capabilities, and regulatory compliance facilitate adoption, end-of-life visibility remains a universal barrier. This thesis contributes to the literature on circular business models by offering sector-specific insights and provides managers with practical guidance for adopting DFR in the heavy-duty manufacturing industry
Leverating developer obligations for a sustainable future? Negotiating private contributions for municipal infrastructure development
Rapid urbanization and climate change intensify demand for high quality urban infrastructure, raising operational and financial pressures on municipalities. In the Netherlands, land based financing through Developer Obligations can recover public infrastructure costs from private developers, yet unclear legislation, uneven application, and limited municipal capacity weaken effectiveness and capture of land value uplift. This study investigates how Dutch municipalities can optimize Negotiated Developer Obligations to fund off site sustainable infrastructure for greenfield development while respecting developer feasibility. It assesses how legal frameworks shape negotiation dynamics, identifies factors that influence developers’ willingness to contribute for public benefit, and explores approaches to fair cost sharing. Drawing on theories of Policy Failure, the Implementation Gap, and negotiation, the research highlights the roles of transparency, trust, and adaptability in reaching workable agreements. Findings provide practical guidance to align public and private interests in the built environment, address funding shortfalls, and strengthen implementation of Negotiated Developer Obligations. Recommendations include clearer statutory guidance, standardized procedures that retain room for context specific bargaining, improved municipal capacity for valuation and project management, and mechanisms that link contributions to measurable benefits. Together, these steps can improve cost recovery and readiness for evolving infrastructure challenges across Dutch cities and provinces
Balancing Demands through Inclusion Investigating the impact of inclusive leadership on work-life balance via job autonomy and emotional exhaustion
This study investigates the effect of inclusive leadership on employees' work-life balance and examines the extent to which this effect is mediated by job autonomy and emotional exhaustion. From the perspective of the Conservation of Resources theory, inclusive leadership serves as a source to obtain and retain other resources, which can lead to a healthier work-life balance. Through a quantitative, cross-sectional study involving 333 respondents, this research examined whether inclusive leadership is associated with a better work-life balance, increased job autonomy, and reduced emotional exhaustion. The results indicate that inclusive leadership is positively associated with work-life balance and job autonomy, and negatively related to emotional exhaustion. However, job autonomy and emotional exhaustion appear to have no mediation effects in this model, suggesting that the effect of inclusive leadership on work-life balance is mainly direct. The study contributes to the literature by considering inclusive leadership not merely as a contextual factor, but as an actively influencing variable. Additionally, this study underlines the importance of training programs for supervisors that improve inclusive behavior to enhance employee well-being. For future research, it is recommended to analyze specific variables in greater detail and conduct longitudinal studies to establish stronger causal claims

Only as strong as its weakest link: the role of industry type in the relationship between supply chain diversification and post-crisis organisational recovery
Handling large crises and finding appropriate risk-mitigation strategies for large disruptions remains a challenge for organisations. One way for firms to build resilience to handle and recover from crises is by diversifying supply chains. However, little research has yet examined different effects for industry type of supply chain diversification (SCD) on post-crisis resilience in the post-pandemic era. In the context of the COVID-19 crisis, this research takes a dynamic capabilities approach to examine whether SCD strategies can help firms to be more independent and agile to decrease time-to-recovery (TTR) and whether industry type moderates this relationship. A distinction is made between manufacturing and service industries, and SCD is measured through geographical diversification (GD) and product line diversification (PLD). Multiple linear regression with interaction effects is used to examine possible relationships. Contrary to the hypotheses, the results showed that more geographical diversification led to longer recovery times specifically for manufacturing firms, while PLD had no effect for either industry. The results suggest that in times of crisis, manufacturing firms may experience issues rather than benefits from geographical diversification, as their recovery time is longer when they are more geographically diversified. For service firms, no significant effects were found
