Innovating Sustainability in Opera for Longevity in Dynamic Environments - Climate Intervention, Opera, and Sustainable Business Model Innovation
Climate change has become an unavoidable conversation within the business of opera,
particularly as simultaneous conversations position Earth’s environment and opera as “dying.”
As a result, opera houses worldwide have restructured and experimented with interventions to
increase sustainability and limit climate impact. However, no study has comprehensively charted
these interventions, nor investigated their impact upon opera as an institution. Evaluating data
gathered from fieldwork undertaken at three different, and geographically distinct, European
opera houses, this thesis presents a holistic look at the impact of sustainability upon opera
business models. Rooted within design-centric sustainable business model innovation theory, this
thesis illustrates the successes and shortfalls of the present, ideates a hypothetical future through
the presentation of ISOLDE 2.0, a new integrated business model for opera and sustainability,
and suggests a hopeful future for the climate-opera space
Beyond the Acropolis: Rethinking Athens’ Tourism Identity in the Shadow of Classical Antiquity
This thesis investigates how the commodification of Greece’s image, predominantly shaped by its Classical antiquity, influences mainstream tourism and narrows down visitors’ experiences of the country’s cultural heritage and identity. The romanticization of an “iconic” Greece has perpetuated the enduring influence of a stereotype that impacts tourists’ modern perceptions. This branding approach leads to an overreliance on the Classical age that marginalizes the representation of other sides of Greece’s culture. Focusing on the key examples of the Acropolis of Athens and its museum, this study explores how the constructed narrative of an “iconic” Greece rooted in its Classical past frames tourists’ interactions with the broader cultural landscape offered by the country. The central question driving this thesis is to what extent this emphasis on the Classical past, which characterizes Athens’ tourism branding, overshadows aspects of the city’s contemporary culture. Several cultural institutions that could be at the forefront of Athens’ tourism offering, showing visitors what Athens truly is, do not receive the required attention. For example, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Athens, home to the National Library and the Greek National Opera, plays a key role in shaping the city’s evolving cultural identity. Yet, its presence to the international audience remains overlooked. In this study, I employ semi-structured interviews with visitors, participant observation, content analysis in the Acropolis Museum, and a SNFCC survey to explore how Classical imagery forms perceptions of modern Athens in tourism. The study also considers the implications of this dynamic for cultural sustainability and the diversification of Athens as a tourist destination. Ultimately, this research seeks to highlight the potential for a more balanced representation of Greek cultural identity — one that integrates both its Classical and contemporary cultural scene — to foster a richer, more inclusive cultural experience for visitors
Antisemitism in the Labour Party’s Public Discourse Under Corbyn’s Leadership
This bachelor's thesis explores manifestations of antisemitism within the British Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. The study employs theoretical frameworks from scholars such as David Rich, David Hirsh, and Gidley et al., to analyse how antisemitism is perpetuated through 1) the “oppressor-oppressed binary”, 2) the “politics of position”, and 3) the dual identification of Jews with capitalism and colonialism on the one hand, and the Israeli-Arab conflict on the other. Rich’s theory of an “oppressor-oppressed binary” states that a complex political and historical situation is oversimplified casting Israelis as oppressors and Palestinians as oppressed, thereby ignoring all other forms of oppression. Hirsh’s theory of “politics of position” builds on that and explains how the alignment with the oppressed in such a binary model of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East leads to the inability to call out antisemitism, even if it is completely unrelated to the conflict. Gidley et al. explain how the identification of Jews with capitalism and colonialism as well as with Israeli politics constitutes a contemporary form for century-old antisemitic thinking. The thesis provides concrete examples for each theory of contemporary antisemitism within the Labour party, such as Jeremy Corbyn’s claim that Hamas and Hezbollah are his “friends”, his defence of a mural that was widely described as antisemitic, Jackie Walker’s claim that Jews were the “chief financier of the slave trade” and finally, Naz Shah's demand to relocate Israelis. The study emphasizes the importance of a complex understanding of antisemitism, advocating for critical thinking and an unwavering stance against all forms of prejudice
The influence of organised networks on amplifying agricultural degrowth initiatives
The current agricultural system farms mostly unsustainable. Degrowth is a countermovement that aims for an equitable downscaling of production and consumption that increases human well-being and enhances ecological conditions, such as in agriculture. Nevertheless, farmers who farm according to degrowth’s principles face many barriers when amplifying. This Master’s thesis therefore researches one aspect that could potentially influence the barriers, namely, organised networks. Through semi-structured interviews and observations, I analysed three Dutch organised networks: het Agroforestry Netwerk Nederland, het Agroecologie Netwerk, and Toekomstboeren. The results show that the networks mostly influence the social capital of the farmers and influence the practical barriers the farmers face. However, the influence of the networks on the political barriers is limited. In sum, the influence of the organised networks on amplifying agricultural degrowth initiatives is limited, as the political barriers are the most influential
An analysis of policy transfer, A cross-case comparison of the ’Water as Leverage‘ programme in Semarang, Indonesia and the Wadden Sea region
This master’s thesis, titled "An Analysis of Policy Transfer: A Cross-Case Comparison of the 'Water As Leverage' Programme in Indonesia and the Wadden Sea Region," aims to uncover how knowledge transfer and policy adaptation occur in water governance. The thesis highlights the urgency of effective water management amidst climate change, urbanisation, and other challenges, which requires international collaboration for sharing best practices and innovative solutions, with a focus on policy transfer as a mechanism for enhancing decision-making and addressing water-related issues. The theoretical framework encompasses concepts such as water challenges, policy learning, and power dynamics, while the methodology outlines a case study approach to analyse the practical applications of policy transfer. The research seeks to address both the opportunities and limitations of policy transfer in enhancing water governance, ultimately resulting in more effective and inclusive water management strategies. Interview insights show the critical role of funding, networking, and effective communication in overcoming these challenges, showing the necessity of collaboration and community engagement for successful programme development.

The influence of shareholder value and stakeholder value approaches on corporate social innovation
This thesis analyses under what conditions shareholder value and stakeholder value approaches influence the scalability success of corporate social innovations (CSI) in Asian developing countries. Drawing on fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of 34 cases, the research identifies four distinct configurational pathways, continuous resource commitment, relational engagement, strategic social alignment and financially anchored commitment, that lead to successful CSI scaling. The findings reveal that no single condition guarantees scalability; rather, success emerges from specific combinations conditions. Stakeholder value approaches prove vital in contexts with institutional voids, while shareholder-driven strategies succeed when supported by strong internal resources and favourable environments. The most robust outcomes result from when business and social objectives are aligned through shared value strategies. The thesis contributes to CSI theory by demonstrating that shareholder and stakeholder value approaches are not mutually exclusive but can be complementary under certain conditions. These insights have practical relevance for organisations seeking to scale socially impactful innovations in developing countries, aiming to foster inclusive and sustainable development
