Understanding Risk Perception in Sudan’s Humanitarian Sector - A Phenomenological inquiry into local and international perspectives
Sudan's history of political instability worsened with the April 2023 conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, escalating security risks. For humanitarian and development practitioners, risk perception plays a key role in security management and organisational decision-making. However, perceptions between staff inside and outside Sudan often differ, potentially impacting security measures and project implementation.
This study explored how practitioners experience working in Sudan and examined the factors shaping their risk perceptions and decision-making. Literature suggests influences such as personal experience, psychological biases, cultural norms, and organisational values. Through qualitative research and expert interviews, findings revealed that while all staff acknowledge the severe risks, interpretations vary. Sudanese field staff display resilience and optimism, sometimes downplaying risks, while external staff, relying on distant reports, tend to emphasize danger. These differing perceptions can affect trust, security reporting and organisational risk management.
Organisational mandates strongly influence risk-taking behaviours and project continuity. Contrary to expectations, heuristics did not emerge as a key factor in decision-making, likely due to hierarchical structures of the studied organisations. This research highlights the need for better communication between staff working in- and outside the country and raises ethical concerns over outsourcing risks to local partners
Shifting to Electric: An exploration of motorcyclists’ future perspectives
This research explored the future perspectives of motorcyclists in the Netherlands with regards to a transition from fuel-powered motorcycles to electric-powered motorcycles. The aim was to understand how these perspectives are formed and how they relate to the intentions of motorcyclists towards adopting an electric-powered motorcycle. To comprehensively understand these intentions and perspectives, a qualitative research approach was undertaken. The method of gathering the required insights from the 20 participants of this research, was through the use of semi-structured interviews.
Guiding this research was a framework that integrated concepts from two theories, these were futures studies and the theory of planned behaviour. By analysing the collected data through the lens of these theories and their concepts, provided a broad understanding of how future perspectives of motorcyclists are shaped.
The findings of this research showed that the intentions that motorcyclists have towards adopting an electric-powered motorcycle were closely tied to the primary activity they personally associated motorcycling with. Which in turn influenced both what they expected from the future and what they ideally hoped for. From patterns that were identified in the data, three distinct motorcyclist profiles emerged. These three profiles were: commuters, group riders, and recreational riders
The effect of color and involvement on persuasion through visual communication.
The main research topic of this study is persuasion through visual communication. The research question being studied is: What is the effect of color used and involvement to the subject on persuasion through visual communication? The answer to this question will provide more knowledge about how to use visual most effectively to persuade people. To find an answer to the research question, a 2x2 experimental design was used. For this experiment two sets of three icon arrays were created containing information about the relation between added sugar intake and the risks of dying from cardiovascular disease. In this experiment, participants were randomly assigned to the monochrome (black and white) or the color condition (red and green). After answering questions about their involvement to the subject, the participants were divided into either the low- or high-involvement group. The results of this study showed that while there was a significant effect of involvement, no significant effect of color was found and there was no significant interaction between color and involvement
Logo’s zijn belangrijke elementen in merkstrategie en visuele communicatie (Balmer, 2001;
controlevariabele.
Islam in Soviet Central Asia: A Comparison of Soviet Religious Policy for Islam in Central Asia and The Russian Orthodox Church
The Soviet Union had religious policy that impacted religious denominations differently and was often implemented differently per region as well. This thesis combines prior research on the religious policy for Islam in Central Asia and the Russian Orthodox Church with a specific focus on the institutions that were setup to overlook religion and comparing how they impacted the Russian Orthodox Church and Islam in Central Asia. This comparison serves to further our understanding of Islam in Central Asia and how it was influenced by its Soviet past
An experimental investigation on the effect of value frame messages to change sustainable dietary intentions of Dutch young adults.
This study investigated how value frame videos could influence dietary intentions among young Dutch adults, with the aim of reducing red meat consumption and increasing plant-based alternative intake. Based on the value-belief-norm (VBN) theory (Stern, 2000), the effectiveness of four value frame videos (biospheric, egoistic, altruistic, hedonic, and control) was tested on intention to eat red meat and PBA. It was hypothesized that targeted value frame videos would result in an average lower intention to consume red-meat and a higher intention to consume plant-based alternatives, but analyses have not shown any significant evidence for this. It was hypothesized that biospheric and egoistic value frames would differentially affect intentions to consume meat or PBAs. However, results showed no significant evidence of impact by value frame videos on participants’ dietary intentions. This study found no evidence that these values can be effectively activated through short video messages
Stitched by small hands: Explaining firm-level exposure to child labour through institutional strength and CSR engagement
This thesis examines how national legal institutions affect firm-level exposure to child labour risk in
global fashion supply chains and whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) moderates this
relationship. Drawing on institutional theory and literature on transnational labour governance, firmlevel
ESG data are combined with national law indicators. Using panel data from 358 OECD-based
fashion firms (2007-2020), the analysis shows that institutional strength in firms’ home countries alone
does not reduce the risk of child labour. However, CSR engagement significantly moderates this
relationship: companies with stronger CSR engagement are less likely to be associated with reported
child labour incidents, especially when operating in countries with weaker institutional environments,
suggesting that CSR may reinforce or counterbalance regulation, depending on context. This thesis
contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of CSR engagement, embedded
in national governance environments. These findings are particularly relevant in supply chains where
regulatory frameworks are designed in firms’ home countries, while labour rights violations typically
occur in host countries with weaker enforcement. The thesis offers practical insights for policymakers,
firms and civil society organisations seeking to improve labour conditions: regulatory efforts are most
effective complemented by credible CSR engagement, especially in environments with limited
institutional capacity
Between Health and Affordability: Governance, Public Values and Urban Development in the Netherlands
This thesis examines how ambitions for a ‘healthy city’ relate to housing affordability in Dutch urban development, and what role governance plays in shaping that relationship. Health and affordability are both increasingly framed as public values, yet in practice they often collide. Measures to improve health, such as greening, climate adaptation and investments in liveability, can raise area attractiveness and property values, which in turn may increase housing costs and exclusion risks for lower- and middle-income groups.
Using a qualitative, comparative case study of Arnhem and Rotterdam, supported by policy analysis and semi-structured interviews, this research analyses how health and affordability are framed, anchored, and implemented. The thesis shows that the extent to which these public values are safeguarded depends on governance capacity: legal and financial instruments, role allocation, and the ability to steer across policy domains.
The study concludes that without early, binding integration of both health and affordability in development agreements, health risks becoming a selective spatial quality for those who can afford it, rather than a collective right
