    No full text

Crypto minds at risk: ranking cognitive biases among Dutch retail and potential investors

    No full text
This thesis investigates how five key behavioral biases: herding, overconfidence, loss aversion, regret aversion, and anchoring shape cryptocurrency investment decisions among Dutch retail and potential investors. A mixed-methods design, consisting of the Fuzzy AHP, Likert-scale averages, and regression models, is used to distinguish between what investors believe influences them and what actually drives their investment behavior. The findings show that potential investors perceive herding and regret aversion as more influential, although they show no significant effect on investment propensity. For retail investors, anchoring and overconfidence are perceived as most important, with overconfidence also significantly affecting investment behavior. These findings emphasize the discrepancy between perceived importance and actual behavioral influence and highlight the differences between investor types. These insights contribute to behavioral finance literature and bring practical implications for tailored education and regulatory developments. Key words: behavioral biases, crypto investing, Fuzzy AHP, regression analysi

Beyond the urban boundary: uncovering small-scale housing development in the Netherlands

    No full text
The growing housing shortage in the Netherlands calls for effective housing solutions, particularly considering middle-income households and first-time buyers. Simultaneously, limited open space in the Netherlands must be preserved and used efficiently. Even though large-scale housing projects remain essential, small-scale developments outside urban boundaries (fewer than 12 houses) are increasingly seen as part of the solution. However, there is limited insight into the role and characteristics of these developments and to what extent they align with objectives of ‘good spatial planning’. This quantitative study uses the BAG, along with other Kadaster data, to analyse small-scale housing development projects outside urban boundaries in the Netherlands over the past ten years. A method for differentiating housing projects in the BAG lead to results indicating that small-scale developments have accounted for 12 percent of all housing construction outside urban areas. However, they primarily involve large, detached, owner-occupied houses on large plots, often excluding terraced and social rental housing. This does not align with objectives aiming for compact urban growth, efficient land use and inclusive housing. Smaller, clustered houses outside urban boundaries can lead to more efficient land use and promote equal access to housing resources

    Language in a border landscape

    No full text
This master thesis examines the relationship between the declining knowledge of German language in the Netherlands on the one hand and cross-border activities of businesses and changing cross-border commuting in the Dutch-German border region on the other hand. People in the Netherlands are less proficient in German nowadays than in the past. This causes an increasing language barrier, and possible effects of this onto business-to-business and business-to-consumer activities of businesses in the border region are studied in this research, as well as the role that language plays in people’s choice to look for a job abroad. This study applied an explanatory sequential research design. It demonstrates that language barriers play a different role in business-to-business and business-to-consumer activities in the border region. In business-to-consumer activities, having at least some passive knowledge is important, especially when the value of the products that are traded increases. Language barriers hinder businesses more in trading with businesses across the border, but other non-cultural factors play a significant role as well. In cross-border labour, language has less influence onto peoples decision-making process to participate in cross-border commuting. Recognition of diplomas and the current job market in the Netherlands are more important here

The Effects of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy after Minimally Invasive Cervical Esophagectomy on Voice Quality: Assessment through Objective Acoustic Parameters

    No full text
Minimally Invasive Cervical Esophagectomy (MICE) is an innovative surgical approach for treating esophageal cancer but carries an increased risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP), potentially affecting voice quality. This study investigates changes in voice quality following MICE in patients with potential RLNP, using objective acoustic analysis. Voice samples from 12 patients at three time points were analysed in Praat. Four out of nine acoustic parameters showed significant changes over time, though trends varied. The modified Dysphonia Severity Index (mDSI) initially appeared sensitive but was excluded due to differing calculation methods and inconsistent patterns. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), especially its individual parameters, is recommended for clinical use. Findings suggest that objective voice measures can capture voice changes in patients with potential RLNP after MICE. However, substantial interindividual variation and methodological limitations highlight the need for further research with larger samples and standardized protocols to establish clinical applicability

A revenue-neutral carbon tax and carbon efficiency: the case of British Columbia

    No full text
This thesis examines the effect of the British Columbian carbon tax on the carbon efficiency in the province in general as well as in its economic sectors. Carbon efficiency is defined as the carbon intensity calculated by dividing the carbon emissions by the GDP produced by the industry. The results of the generalized synthetic control models suggest that the British Columbian tax is not effective in reducing the carbon intensity as well as the carbon emissions of the province. However, it indicates that the carbon tax is not affecting the GDP produced by the industry. Additionally, the results suggest that the carbon tax is not effective in reducing the carbon intensity in the economic sectors in British Columbia. Moreover, the findings in this thesis show an increase in the carbon intensity in the buildings sector due to the British Columbian carbon tax. Hence, this thesis is in line with the public concerns regarding the effectiveness of the British Columbian carbon tax

PERCEPTIE IN EEN NIEUW LICHT - Over zintuigelijke ervaring en perceptie in naoorlogse immersieve lichtinstallaties

    No full text

    Uncertainty and dollar dominance

    No full text
This thesis estimates the relationships between different types of uncertainty and dollar dominance, in a Max Share identification framework that allows for simultaneous identification of multiple shocks. Two alternative hypotheses are formulated: different types of uncertainty have different effects, and uncertainty is partially endogenous. The results reject both null hypotheses, indicating both differential effects and partial endogeneity. However, the reason for these results is unclear. Safe-haven effects and inherent instabilities cancel each other out, and trade aspects of dollar dominance are hard to measure in a shock-based methodological framework. Overall, the results do not indicate that the end of dollar dominance is near, and the thesis gives multiple recommendations for future research

Het kan nét wat zuiniger. Een onderzoek naar netcongestie en energie-efficiëntie

    No full text

Use of ChatGPT in the financial statement audit (execution phase) and the influence of ethical implications

    No full text
Artificial Intelligence is reshaping professional practices, including the field of auditing. This research investigates the use of ChatGPT during the execution phase of the financial statement audit, focusing on its impact on audit efficiency and accuracy, and the ethical implications that influence its usage. An inductive research approach is adopted, using semi-structured interviews with auditors from a Dutch SME accountancy company. The results reveal that ChatGPT is primarily used for textual tasks and regulatory research, contributing to efficiency and, to a lesser extent, accuracy. However, its broader usage is constrained due to the inefficiency, inaccuracy, and ethical implications (privacy, security, bias, and transparency). These implications are particularly significant in an SME company that cannot create proprietary AI tools, and for auditors who have for-profit clients. While present use is modest, respondents are optimistic about ChatGPT's prospects as the technology continually evolves. However, the research acknowledges limitations such as potential interpretation bias in the data analysis process, focus on one audit phase, and the single-company sample. Future research should explore broader contexts, involving other audit phases and more companies. Overall, this research demonstrates both the potential and the implications of incorporating ChatGPT into the execution phase of the financial statement audit
