Empowering IPLCs in the Brazilian Amazon and the role of European Institutions
This thesis research studies empowerment of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in the Brazilian Amazon, and how European institutions, specifically the Norwegian institutions Norad and NICFI, exert their influence on this empowerment. The theories on particpatory-environmental governance and international cooperation contribute to the understanding of the process of empowering IPLCs. They are incorporated in the analysis of the qualitative data on the Norwegian initiatives and the European views on the empowerment of IPLCs. The study focuses on the issues of IPLC-rights, deforestation, agency in decision-making processes, and how to effectively contribute to empowering IPLCs in the Brazilian Amazon. It found that effectively contributing to empowering IPLCs, direct funding and support towards IPLC-led organizations and participatory-environmental governance are crucial. This adds to the idea that IPLCs need a place at the negotiating- and decision-making table to voice their opinions and concerns. The awareness is increasing that IPLCs have paramount knowledge in protecting forest and nature, and therefore are of high importance in fighting global environmental problems. The findings of this study illustrate the current situation of the process of empowering IPLCs in the Brazilian Amazon, the role of Norad and NICFI, and improvements that are made in this process
Membership with Impact: The Value of Older Employee Networks A qualitative study of the lived experiences within an older employee network and its contribution to the inclusion of older employees
This study contributes to the growing body of research about diversity networks by examining which experiences members seek to gain from their participation in an older employee network, and how these experiences contribute to the inclusion of older employees. In doing so, this study sheds light on a perspective that has thus far received limited scholarly attention: the viewpoint of the network members. By conducting semi-structured interviews with eleven members of an older employee network within a Dutch governmental institution, insights were gained into the experiences these members seek to achieve and how these contribute to their inclusion. The findings reveal that identity positioning is a critical condition for the network’s ability to promote inclusion. This highlights the tension between individual participation motives and the collective identity required for inclusion efforts. Additionally, the results suggest that collaboration between older and younger employee networks can facilitate open dialogue about mutual stereotypes, thereby enhancing collaboration and promoting greater inclusion across both groups
Strategic Repositioning under Institutional Uncertainty: NGO Strategies during the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive Transposition Phase in the Netherlands
This master thesis investigates how and why NGOs in the Netherlands adapt their strategies during the transposition phase of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), a period characterized by institutional uncertainty. Based on eight in-depth interviews and extensive document analysis, it is revealed how NGOs operate within a politically volatile playing field in which formal rules shift and legitimacy is under pressure. The study shows that NGOs are not passive norm followers, but strategic actors that proactively develop scenarios, recalibrate legitimacy and mobilize coalitions to maintain influence. These strategies emerge: defensive adjustment and scenario thinking, legitimacy management, and intensive policy advocacy via coordinated networks. In doing so, NGOs increasingly adopt hybrid roles depending on the institutional force field and the form of legitimacy that is decisive at that moment. This strategic role hybridization enables NGOs to navigate flexibly within a polycentric governance field in which diverse normative expectations converge. The research contributes to the refinement of theory formation on institutional work and strategic response models and offers practical tools for effective positioning under institutional uncertainty
Perceived inequality in Refugee Reception: university students on the "Double Standard"
This thesis explores how university students perceive the ‘double standard’ in refugee reception, particularly the differing treatment of Ukrainian refugees compared to those from the Global South. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, European countries offered generous support to Ukrainian refugees, which strongly contrasted with more restrictive responses to refugees from countries like Syria or Eritrea. This study investigates how young, educated individuals interpret this difference and what factors shape their views.
Using a qualitative approach, twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with Radboud University students from diverse academic backgrounds. The data was analyzed through thematic analysis, by use of the Framing Theory (Dennison, 2021), Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1986), and McCloskey’s (2022) “Hierarchy of Victims.” Three key themes emerged: student perspectives on fairness and cultural proximity, perceptions of public opinion shaped by misinformation and bias and the media’s role in framing refugee narratives.
Findings reveal that students are critically aware of unequal treatment and often experience internal conflict between moral ideals and implicit cultural biases. This study contributes to migration and public opinion research by highlighting the self-awareness and emotional engagement of future societal actors in shaping inclusive refugee policies
The problems leading to Strategic Energy Planning in the municipal landscape
This study explores how Dutch municipalities integrate Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) into their policy agendas amid growing challenges posed by the energy transition. Increasing spatial constraints and widespread grid congestion plague municipalities, prompting a need for integrated planning strategies. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including interviews and a national survey among 80 municipalities. The research has developed and applied a framework based on Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Approach and Danish strategic energy practices. Findings show that nearly all of municipalities experience energy-related hindrance and in total 38% of projects are hindered by energy-related issues. While municipalities acknowledge the importance of energy planning, progress is constrained by complex regulations, insufficient interdepartmental cooperation, and limited spatial and financial resources. The study contributes a tailored framework for understanding how energy issues are problematized, addressed through policy, and shaped by political dynamics at the local level. Furthermore, the study advices on potential further research which could be done as a follow-up to this one
The non-monetary values of urban green space in Arnhem
Cities are more and more looking towards densification as a strategy to grow the housing stock, meaning that space in urban environments becomes scarcer and more contested. Urban green spaces represent little to no monetary value, the added value of UGS towards the community is easily overlooked in cost-benefit analyses. This research has created a deeper understanding of the use and valuation – thus the non-monetary values – of urban green spaces. Applied to the case of Arnhem respondents have been questioned regarding their use of different green spaces, using the new PGIS-survey tool Survey123. Green spaces are most often used for exercise, to experience nature and to find inspiration or peace, and most often valued for their proximity to one’s home, its aesthetics and the natural feeling it provides. This research has been able to prove that scattered green spaces (<5ha) are used and valued significantly different than larger green spaces. Furthermore, this research has further explored the utilization potential of Survey123 in an academic (PGIS) context. We have been able to show that Survey123 is a promising tool in this regard, but currently lacks user-friendliness, which upholds or even heightens the digital- and cognitive barriers that PGIS-Surveys can present
