Moluccans in the Netherlands and their social position development
The objective of this research has been to unpack why Moluccans in the Netherlands on average are in a less favourable social position. The role of structural factors will be examined as for their interplay with the (in)ability of Moluccans to challenge their less favourable social position. By looking at the interplay between structure and agency, the social position of the Moluccan community and its relationship with the Dutch government and society is being examined.
The unique history of the Moluccan community and its relationship with the Dutch government and society, have long affected, and still do affect, the social position of Moluccans in the Netherlands. The starting position and intergenerational pain initiated in the 1950’s are the most telling examples of this. However, despite these structural factors, the community has also been able to put its social position on the social agenda. Today the main issue is to get clear what the concrete needs are from within the community to improve or simply embrace its social position. For this, dialogue and (trauma) healing is essential. The structural factor of being a scattered and diverse community complicates that process, but the potential of the community and its initiatives are promising
Constructing the responsible individual: A critical discourse analysis of Coca-Cola’s social media communication
As sustainability becomes a more important challenge globally, companies are increasingly expected to not only act responsibly, but to communicate their sustainable efforts with stakeholders as well. This study investigates how Coca-Cola constructs the ‘responsible individual’ in their communication through linguistic choices. A Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was conducted, analyzing 19 LinkedIn posts published by Coca-Cola in the past year. An abductive coding approach was employed, combining both deductive and inductive methods. The deductive method applied the SHIFT framework to identify the five psychological factors present in Coca-Cola’s communication, to influence individual behavior to be more sustainable: Social Influence, Habit Formation, Individual Self, Feelings and Cognition, and Tangibility. The inductive approach, based on the Gioia method, allowed for the emergence of two additional themes: Motivate Collective and Enablement. These findings illustrate how Coca-Cola promotes responsibility, through emotional appeals, as a collaborative effort and facilitates consumer engagement through partnerships and innovations. Together these results demonstrate how Coca-Cola constructs the ‘responsible individual’ in their communication by integrating the five psychological factors of the SHIFT framework with additional emergent themes, emphasizing the facilitation of sustainable behavior and positioning consumers as part of a collective
Just shoot them all: power, chokepoints and convergence in the Red Sea
This thesis analyzes the role of chokepoints in the 2023-2025 Red Sea conflict. The conflict between the United States and Houthis ran from October 2023 to May 2025 and resulted in significant alterations to the geopolitical status quo. The primary factor connecting the cause, conduct, and outcome of the conflict was the geographical chokepoint of the Red Sea. This thesis reviews the existing geographic literature regarding chokepoints and identifies three primary categories through which chokepoints have traditionally been analyzed: economic, military, and political. Through an interdisciplinary documentary analysis, this thesis utilizes the 2023-2025 Red Sea conflict as a case study and finds that aspects of all three categories of chokepoints can be identified. The main argument of this thesis is that while geographic chokepoints can be seen as producing discrete economic, military, and political outcomes, these categories of chokepoint cannot be analyzed in isolation. Each category of chokepoint impacts the others, and future geographic studies of chokepoints would benefit in an integrated approach that could better account for outcomes resulting from conflicts at chokepoints
From frontline to feed: how first person view drones in Ukraine are reshaping the character of warfare
This research focuses on the large-scale deployment of First Person View (FPV) drones in the war between Russia and Ukraine and its implications for modern warfare. This war is considered the first high-intensity drone war and the first social media war. Within this war, FPV drones play a central role. Whereas previously mainly larger drones were used, the emergence of commercially available FPV drones has fundamentally changed the battlefield. This qualitative study, based on document analysis and semi-structured interviews, analyses the deployment of FPV drones at tactical, operational and strategic levels. At the tactical level, they are mainly used for reconnaissance and attacks. At the same time, they disseminate video footage via social media that contributes to crowdfunding and recruitment, leading to participatory warfare. The study also highlights the broader implications of commercial actors and the ethical and legal issues surrounding autonomous systems. It shows that FPV drones not only transform the battlefield but also lead to new forms of civic engagement and strategic action, with commercial and technological actors playing a central role. The findings offer valuable insights for both the war in Ukraine and future wars in which drones will play a key role
(Un/Re)Thinking the Binary: The Use of (Non)Violence in Derrida’s Ontology of Violence and Butler’s Gender Performativity
This essay involves an investigation of the tension between structural violence and non-binary gender identity using Judith Butler’s notion of gender as “performative.” Their performative “rethinking” of gender is crucial for non-binary individuals as it surfaces the structural violence inherent in binary gender norms, continuously imposing binary gender categories [man/woman], rooted in heteronormative hierarchical oppositional logics [either/or], on individuals. While non-binary subjectivity resists the exclusionary logic of binary gender frameworks, it remains constituted in relation to the very structures it seeks to negate and resist. The question central to this essay is therefore: how can one understand the simultaneous dependence on and rejection of these oppressive gender norms and their underlying [either/or] logic? In order to reconsider Butler’s concept of gender performativity in light of this paradox, this study draws on Jacques Derrida’s theories of positionality and violence. More specifically, through his conceptualization of “differentiation” and “undecidability,” it becomes clear that understanding and combating gender must avoid reinforcing new hierarchical ways of thinking. Therefore, I ultimately propose how non-binary gender identity can be approached through a spectral positioning that disrupts and exceeds binary logic, fostering a continuous sensitivity articulated in a “double writing” essential for transforming “thinking” gender
I’m Sorry, the Old Taylor Can’t Come to the Phone Right Now”: A Case Study on the Taylor Swift’s Political Evolution in the Context of Fourth Wave Feminism
This thesis explores the political awakening and evolution of Taylor Swift through the context
of Fourth Wave Feminism. This feminist wave is characterized by fighting rape culture, using
online feminism, highlighting intersectionality and the importance of celebrity feminism. This
thesis first uses a contextual analysis of this Fourth Wave as it provides a crucial framework
for understanding Swift’s political awakening and evolution. Specifically, her sexual assault
trial stands out as a pivotal moment, where she publicly embraced feminist values and used
her platform to speak out against rape culture. This signified a turning point, ending her
political silence and the beginning of her involvement in politics. Swift’s political behavior,
especially her endorsements, political statements and music, reflects core themes of the
Fourth Wave, such as online feminism and intersectionality. Furthermore, this thesis
examines her political influence by using a secondary data analysis which focuses on the
impact of Swift’s political involvement on increasing political participation and shaping
political attitudes in the United States. It indicates that Swift has political influence in voter
registration, political campaigning, and in shaping public perceptions of her and certain
political candidates. The secondary data analysis and the contextual analysis together give an
extensive picture of Taylor Swift as a political actor
How do (combinations of) factors contribute to business recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake?
This research has looked at the Great East Japan earthquake and what led to businesses recovering. In the theoretical background, five factors were found to have a positive contribution to business recovery. These five factors are being part of the Construction and manufacturing sector, being Part of a franchise, having a Low disaster impact, having a Big business size, and having Good pre-disaster financial conditions. The QCA method is applied in six steps like calibrating the fuzzy scores into crisp ones, Necessity analyses, making a Truth table, Sufficiency analyses, and a Robustness test. Eventually, three solutions have been found. The first solution is that companies with not good pre-disaster financial conditions are more prone to recover after the earthquake. Secondly, companies that are part of the construction and manufacturing sector and have a high disaster impact, have a higher chance to recover. Lastly, companies which are part of the construction and manufacturing sector and have a big business size, are more likely to recover. In the discussion, the solutions are reviewed by comparing them to the expectations and existing literature. Afterwards, the theoretical and practical implications as well as the limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed
Performing a Memory: a multimodal analysis of multi-authored past life stories narrated collaboratively by groups of friends.
This project sets out to investigate collaborative storytelling among close friends in naturalistic settings, addressing the question: What roles are produced, occupied, emerged, and distributed during these interactions? The study fills a gap in existing literature by specifically examining the dynamic, collaborative narrating of stories by groups of close friends in non-controlled experimental settings. Through this examination we identify what roles emerge during this process. Storytelling roles are expected to be fluid, collaborative and mutually negotiated, involving shifts in verbal and non-verbal communication. The methodology involves recording two informal gatherings of two distinct close-knit groups of friends. The gatherings are analyzed applying Multimodal Interaction Analysis and interpreted through Goffman's production format. This approach provides a comprehensive examination of the complex interplay of roles and interactions in natural storytelling environments, offering insights into group dynamics with potential applications across various disciplines
