Navigating the Currents of Change: An Analysis of Policy Change and Flood Risk Management after the 2021 Limburg Floods

    No full text
Past and current anthropocene activities have resulted in increasing flooding frequency and magnitude, increasing risks worldwide, with severe impacts and consequences as seen during the 2021 Limburg flooding. These flooding events create opportunities for policy learning to improve flood risk management and reduce future flood risks. However, little research has been conducted on how the 2021 Limburg flooding has resulted in the revision of flood-related policies and flood risk management strategies. Thus, a qualitative study was conducted in the form of interviews and policy document analysis to help analyze potential policy change within Dutch flood risk management after the 2021 Limburg flooding, and how the changes reached the political agenda. The results showed that the flooding event led to major suggestions for change within Dutch flood risk management through the Beleidstafel Wateroverlast en Hoogwater, by highlighting shortcomings within flood risk management, gaining widespread attention, receiving political support and pressure from citizens and stakeholders, prompting major suggestions for change within the Multi-Layer Safety concept. However, obstacles can arise during the implementation process due to inadequate resources in the form of budget, personnel, and expertise to execute the suggested policies; as well as opposition towards certain measures from citizens or action group

The Role of Local Governments in Migrant Integration: A Case Study of Dutch Municipalities

    No full text
This study examines the gendered integration processes of female EU labour migrants in the Dutch municipalities of Eindhoven and Helmond. These municipalities were chosen to illustrate how differences in scale shape local contexts and institutional practices. The research examines the extent to which local integration policies address labour market participation, housing security, and social inclusion, and explores the role of Migrant Information Points (MIPs) in supporting these processes. Drawing on in-depth interviews with female migrants, municipal officials, NGO representatives, and MIP staff, the study analyses how gender and labour position intersect to shape integration experiences through the theoretical frameworks of feminisation of migration and intersectionality. The findings suggest that female migrants face structural barriers in employment, housing, childcare, and social participation, while existing support mechanisms often overlook gender-specific needs by treating migrant workers as a homogeneous group. At the same time, women actively navigate these constraints through solidarity networks and long-term settlement strategies. The study emphasizes the need for stronger cooperation between municipalities, civil society, and employers to develop more inclusive local policies, drawing on insights from feminisation of migration and intersectionality, to better address the intersecting identities of female labour migrants. Key Words: Female EU labour migrants, Netherlands, Local integration policies, Feminization of migration, Intersectionality, Eindhoven, Helmon

Melancholic Melodies - Gender and Sadness in The "Sad Girl Indie" Genre

    No full text
The melancholic subject is a character within the ‘sad girl indie’ genre that has risen to popularity over the last decade, largely due to the infamous Spotify playlist called “Sad Girl Starter Pack”, which featured songs that characterized one’s music taste as yearning. With over a million saves, young girls around the world have found solace in the sad lyrics in the comfort of their bedrooms. This type of emotional music became so popular that it evolved into its own genre name: Sad Girl Indie. This thesis offers an analysis of the ‘sad girl indie’ genre, considered a subgenre within the vague bounds of indie music. Therefore, it is difficult to clearly define what falls under this term, as it is more defined by emotional expression than by specific musical characteristics. The thesis explores the historical implications of the pathologizing of the female psyche and how this is represented in the arts, especially within the music scene. It questions how the tortured artist is revered and desired by the music industry and society as a whole. This stereotype, and the genre, is characterized by vulnerability and melancholy. This can become problematic if this image becomes romanticized by the public, especially in the context of rising parasocial fan culture over the last decade. The thesis provides a methodological framework that combines lyrical analysis of the songs most represented in the genre with a discourse analysis of interviews with relevant artists. These findings are analyzed with a theoretical framework of Sigmund Freud on the melancholic subject and Theodor Adorno on the commodification of popular music, supported by contemporary literature on sad girl culture. Therefore, this thesis aims to uncover how the melancholic subject is represented and romanticized in the ‘sad girl indie’ genre by reinforcing feminine stereotypes based on historical views of the female psyche. Keywords: Commodification, Community, Femininity, Melancholy, Sad Girl Cultur

‘Mapping and analysing the impact of spatial data aggregation on urban heat vulnerability maps: A case study on Haarlem, the most petrified city in the Netherlands’

    No full text
Increasing global temperatures are making the implementation of climate adaptation more crucial than ever before. This is due to the fact that urban areas, in which the majority of earth’s population resides, experience much higher temperatures than its surrounding areas. This phenomena is known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Climate Services containing data on climate change and climate adaptation are used to indicate which areas are the most eligible for cooling strategies. This is done with support of vulnerability mapping. However, the way in which data is presented in these maps can affect the interpretation of data. Ultimately, this can affect decision making processes amongst stakeholders who are active in climate adaptive spatial planning. One of the problems that arises during conducting maps with data on climate change is the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP). This is a statistical bias resulting in visual and statistical variations depending on the unit of analysis. Therefore, this research aims to create awareness of the effects of spatial data aggregation on vulnerability maps to the UHI effect. With support of multiple mapping scenarios and statistical analyses, the effects of spatial data aggregation are presented. The usability of the maps is assessed with support of semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in climate adaptive spatial planning. This research contributes to the current social and scientifical gaps on climate adaptation and vulnerability mapping. Keywords: Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI), Climate Adaptation, Climate Services, Vulnerability Mapping, Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), Spatial Data Aggregatio

    No full text

Feminist pedagogies in museum education: a case study of Museum de Fundatie’s ‘Fundatie Collectie: Remix’

    No full text
Museums in the Netherlands are increasingly incorporating inclusivity and interaction within their educational approach. As feminist pedagogies provide methods that reflect this shift, this thesis explores how educational tools provided by Museum de Fundatie can be analyzed through the lens of feminist pedagogies. Originally developed in a classroom setting, this thesis uses feminist pedagogies as an analytical framework by analyzing the educational tools provided by Museum de Fundatie for its exhibition ‘Fundatie Collectie: Remix’. To analyze these educational tools an analytical framework was developed, focusing on the main principles of feminist pedagogies: anti-hierarchical knowledge transmission, intersectionality, personal experience and social change. An additional framework has been made to analyze how the museum presents its exhibition within texts such as wall labels, examining voice, language and visitor involvement. The materials analyzed include the museum’s vision on education, the lay-out of the exhibition itself, the museum’s website, wall labels and guided tours. These were supplemented by a semi-structured in depth interview with an employee of the department of education of Museum de Fundatie. The analysis reveals that Museum de Fundatie’s vision on education and its practices, particularly the use of Visual Thinking Strategies and a non-hierarchical exhibition lay-out, are largely in line with the principles of feminist pedagogies. However, certain elements in the wall labels risk reinforcing traditional hierarchies. Moreover, Museum de Fundatie could improve the implementation of intersectionality and has the potential to further encourage social change. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that feminist pedagogies can function not only as an educational method but also as an analytical framework to assess and potentially reimagine museum education in a more inclusive and participatory way

Realistisch genoeg?

    No full text

NGO strategy adaptation in response to regulatory changes

    No full text
Within Europe regulatory pressure on multinational enterprises is increasing to ensure corporate accountability for human rights and environmental protection in global supply chains. The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive marks a shift from voluntary to mandatory governance, with Article 14 requiring adequate grievance mechanisms. This study examines how Dutch NGOs adapt their strategies in response to these evolving regulatory frameworks, particularly the CSDDD and the proposed Omnibus. It contributes to the literature by analysing NGO strategy adaptation beyond agenda-setting, focusing on how they balance confrontation and collaboration to ensure corporate accountability in practise. A qualitative, inductive case study was conducted, using thematic coding supported by sensitizing concepts from Delalieux et al.’s (2024) virtue and fortuna-framework. Public documents of 17 NGOs were gathered and semi-structured interviews with seven Dutch NGOs were conducted. The results show that NGOs mobilise internal capacities in response to, mainly political, contextual constraints. Findings reveal three main strategies: lobbying and advocacy, narrative adaptation, and alliance-building. These strategies can be applied simultaneously and take both confrontational or collaborative forms, depending largely on internal capabilities and organisational identity. This research pioneers the viewpoint that NGOs actively shape, defend, and implement accountability frameworks through strategic adaptations in uncertain regulatory contexts

    No full text
