Imaging spectroscopy of geological samples and outcrops: Novel insights from microns to meters
Imaging spectroscopy is a powerful, non-destructive mineralogic tool that provides insights into a variety of geological processes. This remote measurement technique has been used for decades from orbital or aerial platforms to characterize surface compositions of Earth and other solar system bodies. These instruments have now been miniaturized for use in the laboratory and field, thereby enabling petrologic analyses of samples and
outcrops. The ecology of methane in streams and rivers: patterns, controls, and global significance
Streams and rivers can substantially modify organic carbon (OC) inputs from terrestrial landscapes, and much of this processing is the result of microbial respiration. While carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the major end‐product of ecosystem respiration, methane (CH₄) is also present in many fluvial environments even though methanogenesis typically requires anoxic conditions that may be scarce in these systems. Given recent recognition of the pervasiveness of this greenhouse gas in streams and rivers, we synthesized existing research and data to identify patterns and drivers of CH₄, knowledge gaps, and research opportunities. This included examining the history of lotic CH4 research, creating a database of concentrations and fluxes (MethDB) to generate a global‐scale estimate of fluvial CH₄ efflux, and developing a conceptual framework and using this framework to consider how human activities may modify fluvial CH₄ dynamics. Current understanding of CH₄ in streams and rivers has been strongly influenced by goals of understanding OC processing and quantifying the contribution of CH₄ to ecosystem C fluxes. Less effort has been directed towards investigating processes that dictate in situ CH₄ production and loss. CH₄ makes a meager contribution to watershed or landscape C budgets, but streams and rivers are often significant CH₄ sources to the atmosphere across these same spatial extents. Most fluvial systems are supersaturated with CH₄ and we estimate an annual global emission of 26.8 Tg CH₄, equivalent to ~15‐40% of wetland and lake effluxes, respectively. Less clear is the role of CH₄ oxidation, methanogenesis, and total anaerobic respiration to whole ecosystem production and respiration. Controls on CH₄ generation and persistence can be viewed in terms of proximate controls that influence methanogenesis (organic matter, temperature, alternative electron acceptors, nutrients) and distal geomorphic and hydrologic drivers. Multiple controls combined with its extreme redox status and low solubility result in high spatial and temporal variance of CH₄ in fluvial environments, which presents a substantial challenge for understanding its larger‐scale dynamics. on the changes in program fidelity over this time, and reflects on continued and emerging strengths and

Saint-Boniface: The Roman Catholic Values that Shape its Landscape
Paper: 34 pp.; ill., digital file.This paper begins by analyzing different divisions in the Saint-Boniface district. It
explains the reasons for focusing on Central Saint-Boniface and more specifically on the
Roman Catholic Church as leader in its landscape transformation. Three integral
institutions, the cathedral, the college and the hospital, are used as case studies,
exemplifying the church’s role in shaping Saint-Boniface’s townscape throughout
history. The essay closes by discussing the effects of these institutions not only on the
landscape, but also on the community and culture. Current characteristics of the

Implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the University College of the North’s Natural Resources Management Technology Program
This report was produced as a result of a practicum placement at University College of the North (UCN) by Heidi Cook, student in the Master’s of Development Practice – Indigenous Development program at the University of Winnipeg, from January to April 2014.
UCN has endorsed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and is currently engaging in issues of implementation, through its strategic planning and program review processes. For the student, the outcomes were to achieve a better understanding of on-the-ground implementation of the UNDRIP and gain experience in the program review process. Through the practicum, UCN also received an assessment of the
existing Aboriginal content of the Natural Resources Management Technology (NRMT) program and
recommendations regarding the integration of UNDRIP into the NRMT curriculum, which are the focus of this report

The food sovereignty and Indigenous food sovereignty initiatives have been recently analyzed to reinforce their position as social justice and peasants movements ... which counteracts the so-called top-down supply-driven approaches promoted by the donor-driven and Government supported programs of food security.

Community forests Canada: Bridging practice, research and advocacy. A Symposium and Workshop Report.
The purpose of this report is to share experiences and observations from the Community Forests Canada joint workshop-symposium hosted by the Centre for Forest Interdisciplinary Research and Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences at The University of Winnipeg on June 25th and 26th, 2014. The new national network, Community Forests Canada, is committed to research, policy development, and advocacy for community forest initiatives. Stakeholders including researchers, Aboriginal representatives, government officials, local advocates, industry representatives, and students came together to exchange experiences and resources of significance to forest communities, industries, and ecosystems."The workshop and symposium were primarily supported by the Social Sciences

Gikinoo'amaagowin Anishinaabeg (Teaching the Anishinaabe People)
This thesis analyzes the roles and responsibilities of Anishinaabe Ogichidaakwe (woman warrior) using Anishinaabe and Western methodologies. As an Anishinaabekwe I use Anishinaabe language to engage in my responsibility to learn and share the language. In this thesis I move in and out of two different ways of knowing adapting to two epistemologies. While moving between Anishinaabe and Western epistemologies I located an ethical space where my spiritually connected and culturally grounded perspective is recognized. I examine and reconstruct the political/leadership, social, and spiritual roles and responsibilities of Ogichidaakwe over a critical period of change, 1632 to 1871. Anishinaabe leadership knowledge and practice experienced a shift as the Anishinaabeg community adapted to the experience of European contact. This shift is recognized after braiding together literature that is outlined in my thesis as the shift, colonial impact and absence. Of particular interest are women-based Aadizookaanag (Anishinaabe narrative with a scared being or spirit in it) and women-based Aadizookaanan (Anishinaabe narratives and ancient stories), and how these narratives are connected to Ogichidaakweg roles and responsibilities. I interconnect the Jiisikaan (shake tent), ethnohistorical, and historical as methodological approaches in my research in search of Debwewin (truth).
