De-politicizing language: obstacles to political theory's engagement with language policy
Get PDFThis article argues that while there exists considerable overlap and potentially productive dialogue between political theory and language policy scholarship, any such effort will be hampered by the dominant approaches to political theory that assume individualistic and instrumentalist conceptions of language. Augmenting the language ideologies approach to such questions, I argue that within political theory there are resources to address such issues. After summarizing a few key contributions of recent political theory to debates on linguistic justice and language rights, the article turns to the writings of John Locke to analyze the underlying conception of language in these approaches. It concludes by suggesting that the key developments that language scholars have focused on in terms of the rise of global English, questions of native versus non-native ownership of language, changes in the nation-state and the context of global capitalism create the conditions in which such liberal and individualistic are unlikely to have significant purchase for scholars of language and language policy. I conclude by suggesting other theoretical resources that yield more attractive perspectives including Antonio Gramsci, Valentin Volos¡inov and Mikhail Bakhtin.https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10993-014-9323-

Subsidizing Professional Sports Teams and Building New Facilities: Flagship Projects for Urban Renewal or Corporate Welfare?

contentious one. Proponents argue this practice is beneficial to the community in terms of municipal revenue,
economic growth and job creation because new money is spent in the economy. Further, this new money is
subject to an economic multiplier effect, which greatly increases the economic impact of the initial expenditures
by creating more jobs and more tax revenue for local governments. Thus, the cost to the taxpayer is said to be
much less than the benefits. Many scholars refute these claims and, based on empirical research, suggest that
quite the opposite is true. They take issue with the idea of team expenditures as new money, and suggest that
the economic multipliers are overstated. They also argue that the cost of ongoing subsidies and capital
investment in the construction of new facilities are underestimated. Furthermore, the sustainability of teams
and facilities must be questioned in light of rapidly escalating costs; both players’ salaries and ticket prices
continue to increase. Fierce competition among cities increases teams’ demands for newer facilities and more

Hibernation Behaviour of Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus)
Get PDFFor temperate endotherms (i.e., mammals and birds) energy costs are highest during winter but food availability is lowest and many mammals depend on hibernation as a result. Hibernation is made up of energy-saving torpor bouts [periods of controlled reduction in body temperature (Tb)], which are interrupted by periodic arousals to normothermic Tb. What triggers these arousals in free-ranging hibernators is not well understood. Some bats with access to flying insects during winter synchronize arousals with sunset, suggesting that feeding opportunities may influence arousal timing. I tested whether hibernating bats from a cold climate without access to food during winter also maintain a circadian rhythm for arousals. I used temperature telemetry to monitor skin temperature (Tsk) of free-ranging little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) hibernating in central Manitoba, Canada. I found no evidence bats, during late winter, synchronized arousals with photoperiod. However, during early spring, as emergence date approached I found bats resumed a circadian pattern of arousals and aroused synchronously with sunset. Female bats give birth after emergence and must emerge earlier from hibernation in good body condition with fat reserves remaining. Difference in reproductive investment should lead to differences in torpor/arousal patterns and emergence timing. I found that males exhibited longer periodic arousals than females, that females emerged earlier than males, independent of environmental conditions, and that male emergence date was predicted by warming cave temperature. Longer arousals by males could reflect mating attempts by males and/or the strong selection pressure on females to be “thrifty” with their fat reserves and emerge in good condition to support pregnancy. Common Interest Development in Canada: Private Communities and the Future of Canadian Cities

communities”, within the Canadian context. Comparing Canadian CIDs to their US counterparts. The author notes that
Canadian developments are more likely to target seniors, tend to have fewer security features and are usually developed
on a smaller scale. The author cautions that the proliferation of CIDs may have significant implications for local
politics and Canadian cities. CID residents in the US are gaining political clout through well-organized homeowner
associations, which constitute an effective lobbying force. Such associations are increasingly advocating measures
such as tax rebates for their constituency, arguing for an end to what they call “double taxation” since CID residents
pay both municipal taxes and monthly fees to the CID. The paper argues that CIDs are exclusionary by nature, fostering
homogeneity in age, race, and income group, and that the proliferation of such development will lead to greater
