    Biocultural Diversity: Innovating in Research For Conservation

Colomb. 2016; 21(1) Supl:S311-319. doi:10.15446/abc.v21n1sup.50920.The conservation of biodiversity may be deemed ethical and more effective by focusing simultaneously on biological and cultural erosion. This idea was in the functional and ethical principles of the initial understanding in conservation biology. However, biological conservation research has emphasized inventories, quantification and georeferencing biodiversity with utilitarian purposes. Such research gives little importance to the intrinsic value of biodiversity provoking calls to explore appropriate ways of "living with" biodiversity. This paper responds to that call. The biocultural approach offers a more comprehensive view to recognize and investigate the complex interrelationships between ecological processes and cultural dynamics. For research, this approach highlights the need to recognize the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, as well as the community worldviews that infuse meaning to community practices and relations with the environment. This paper explores biodiversity research data involving traditional knowledge and communities during the period 1991- 2010 in the GroupLac Database. Given the limited recognition to the contributions of communities, this paper outlines the main barriers that the adoption of the biocultural approach faces. The paper proposes ethical guidelines to transform research attitudes and practices that ignore ancestral rights over the territory and traditional knowledge, hinder the recognition of the intrinsic value of biodiversity, and as a result, prevent conservation in a biodiverse, multi-ethnic and multicultural territory.The English version was supported by University of Winnipeg funding and the work of Laura J. We find that while food deserts exist in Winnipeg, food mirages are even more prevalent - where affordability is a more common barrier to consuming healthy food than distance is. These results emphasize the need for future policy to target the incomes of individuals and food affordability rather than store locations

    Physical characterization of ~2 m diameter near-Earth asteroid 2015 TC25: A possible boulder from E-type asteroid (44) Nysa

    Small near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) (<20 m) are interesting, because they are progenitors for meteorites in our terrestrial collection. The physical characteristics of these small NEAs are crucial to our understanding of the effectiveness of our atmosphere in filtering low-strength impactors. In the past, the characterization of small NEAs has been a challenge, because of the difficulty in detecting them prior to close Earth flyby. In this study, we physically characterized the 2 m diameter NEA 2015 TC25 using ground-based optical, near-infrared and radar assets during a close flyby of the Earth (distance 128,000 km) in 2015 October 12. Our observations suggest that its surface composition is similar to aubrites, a rare class of high-albedo differentiated meteorites. Aubrites make up only 0.14% of all known meteorites in our terrestrial meteorite collection. 2015 TC25 is also a very fast rotator with a period of 133 ± 6 s. We combined the spectral and dynamical properties of 2015 TC25 and found the best candidate source body in the inner main belt to be the 70 km diameter E-type asteroid (44) Nysa. We attribute the difference in spectral slope between the two objects to the lack of regolith on the surface of 2015 TC25. Using the albedo of E-type asteroids (50%–60%) we refine the diameter of 2015 TC25 to 2 m, making it one of the smallest NEAs ever to be characterized.V.R. and J.A.S.’s research work was supported by theNASA Near-Earth Object Observations Program grant NNX14AL06G(PI: Reddy).     Compositional homogeneity of CM parent bodies.

    CM chondrites are the most common type of hydrated meteorites, making up ∼1.5% of all falls. Whereas most CM chondrites experienced only low-temperature (∼0°C–120°C) aqueous alteration, the existence of a small fraction of CM chondrites that suffered both hydration and heating complicates our understanding of the early thermal evolution of the CM parent body(ies). Here, we provide new constraints on the collisional and thermal history of CM-like bodies from a comparison between newly acquired spectral measurements of main-belt Ch/Cgh-type asteroids (70 objects) and existing laboratory spectral measurements of CM chondrites. It first appears that the spectral variation observed among CM-like bodies is essentially due to variations in the average regolith grain size. Second, the spectral properties of the vast majority (unheated) of CM chondrites resemble both the surfaces and the interiors of CM-like bodies, implying a “low” temperature ( 100 km)—supposedly primordial—Ch/ Cgh-type main-belt asteroids likely expose the interiors of the primordial CM parent bodies, a possible consequence of impacts by small asteroids (D < 10 km) in the early solar system.The MIT component of this work is supported by NASA grant 09-NEOO009-0001, and by the National Science Foundation under grants Nos. 0506716 and 0907766.     Sustainability of Housing and Support Programs Implemented at the Winnipeg Site

    This report is the final Winnipeg Site Report of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s At Home/Chez Soi project. The research examined the sustainability of Canada’s At Home/Chez Soi Housing First (HF) programs for homeless persons with mental illness leading up to and after the end of the demonstration phase of the randomized controlled trial. It covers the final period of the project when Sustainability of the project was being planned and implemented, and tells the sustainability story of the project—what happened and why. The objective was to examine to what extent the HF programs were sustained in terms of continuation, fidelity to the HF model, systems integration, and expansion, and to identify factors that facilitated or impeded sustainability outcomes. The findings in the report result from key informant interviews, focus groups, and HF fidelity self-assessment questionnaires from each of the service teams. The Sustainability story is told across three periods of time: a Sustainability Planning period during the last year of the project; a Transition period when the programs were receiving interim funding and were gradually integrated into provincial systems; and a New System period following program integration. The Sustainability Story is followed by a brief overview of factors that impacted the success of sustainability at the Winnipeg site and Cross-Cutting themes and lessons that emerged.MHC
