“More Than Just Another Dumb Blonde Joke”: Humor and Gender in Anita Loos’s Novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Howard Hawks’s Film Adaptation
Get PDFHumor is a central element, if not the cornerstone, of both Anita Loos\u27 highly humorous, satirical novel Gentlemen prefer Blondes and Howard Hawkes\u27 1953 film adaptation of the same name which stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Yet Loos\u27 novel and the film use very different forms and registers of humor in order to achieve very different aims. The 1925 novel reads like a guidebook to the liberated and emancipated lifestyle of the 1920s flapper and provides the reader with an unadorned, strongly satirical view of Western culture. The humor of the film adaptation is of a more situational kind and relies heavily on slapstick. This essay aims to compare and contrast the kinds of humor employed by both novel and film version with a special focus on the relationship of the two main characters, Lorelei and Dorothy. It examines the way in which male and female characters are portrayed in general and investigates how humor and satire is used in order to challenge the firm order of class and society. It is the aim of this essay to draw a clear, differentiated image of these two very distinct works. Furthermore, this analysis tries to find possible reasons for the loss in translation from book to film as well as to find examples where critical themes and satire can still be found but in another form

Gabriel García Márquez – „Chronik eines angekündigten Todes“
Get PDFDer Beitrag analysiert Gabriel García Márquez’ Roman Chronik eines angekündigten Todes unter soziokulturellen und rechtstheoretischen Gesichtspunkten. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, warum der Mord an Santiago Nasar trotz öffentlicher Ankündigung nicht verhindert wurde. Dabei werden die gesellschaftlichen Mechanismen kollektiver Passivität, die patriarchale Ehre als soziale Verpflichtung und die Rolle traditioneller Männlichkeitsbilder herausgearbeitet. Die Täter erscheinen als Getriebene kultureller Normen, ihre Tat als durch Tradition legitimierte Pflicht. Anhand der Neutralisierungstheorie und des Etikettierungsansatzes wird die Zuschreibung von Schuld und Verantwortung analysiert – nicht nur für die Täter, sondern auch für die Dorfgemeinschaft. Der Roman dient so als literarisches Modell zur Reflexion über soziale Mitverantwortung im Rahmen eines sog. Ehrenmordes.
This article explores Gabriel García Márquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold from a socio-legal and cultural perspective. It investigates why the murder of Santiago Nasar, despite being publicly announced, was not prevented. Central to the analysis are mechanisms of collective inaction, patriarchal notions of honor, and traditional models of masculinity. The perpetrators are portrayed as bound by cultural obligation, and the act of murder is framed as a duty legitimized by tradition. Utilizing the theory of neutralization and the labeling approach, the article examines how guilt and responsibility are distributed—not only among the killers but also within the community. The novel emerges as a literary case study that challenges legal norms and reflects on societal complicity and the phenomenon of honor-based violence

Get PDFDer Einsatz von Games in inklusiven Bildungskontexten gilt als weitestgehend unerforscht, dabei bieten sie als interaktive Medienformen vielfältige Potenziale, um beispielsweise literarische Verstehensprozesse anzubahnen und literarische Kom-petenzausprägungen bei Lernenden mit diagnostizierten sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarfen zu ermöglichen. Im Rahmen des Beitrags werden folglich Ergebnisse des Projekts „Potenziale interaktionsbasierter Rezeption“ (kurz: PinbaR) vorgestellt, in welchem das Handlungsverstehen von Primarstufenschüler*innen mit dem sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarf Lernen in einem print- und einem spielorientierten Setting genauer untersucht und Erkenntnisse hinsichtlich der Verwendung von kognitiven und metakognitiven Lernstrategien gewonnen werden konnten.
Abstract (english): Understanding stories interactively. Potentials of interaction-based literature reception in inclusive learning groups
The use of games in inclusive educational contexts is largely unexplored, yet as interactive media they offer a wide range of potential, for example to initiate literary comprehension processes and enable the development of literary competences in learners with diagnosed special educational needs. This article presents the results of the project "Potentials of interaction-based reception" (PinbaR for short), in which the comprehension of primary school pupils with special educational needs for learning in a print-orientated and a game-orientated setting was examined in more detail and findings regarding the use of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies were obtained
Ein Licht in der Dunkelheit. Zur Wirkung des Ludischen in Computerspielen am Beispiel von "Candleman"
Get PDFNarrative Computerspiele unterscheiden sich von anderen Medien des Deutschunterrichts durch den Rezeptionsmodus des Spielens, der in diesem Aufsatz in den Blick genommen wird. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie im Sinne einer Analyse von Computerspielen, das Spielen als solches in Hinblick auf seine Wirkung beschrieben werden kann. Dazu wird das Konzept der ludischen Involvierung herangezogen und auf dessen Wirkungsweise exemplarisch untersucht. Dabei wird deutlich, dass diese abhängig vom Verstehen des Computerspiels ein System aus Mechaniken, Objekten und Zielen sowie der narrativen Elemente eines Computerspiels ist. Auch wird gezeigt, dass die ludische Involvierung als basale Kategorie anderer Involvierungsstrategien gelten kann, indem die Abhängigkeiten zwischen ludischer und emotionaler Involvierung aufgezeigt werden. Hinsichtlich der Ziele von Lehr-Lern-Situationen wird zudem spezifiziert, dass Computerspiele als Systeme begriffen werden müssen, deren Dynamik es im Sinne einer Wirkung von Computerspielen zu verstehen gilt. Zudem wird gezeigt, wie sich dieser Ansatz in das Konzept des literarischen Lernens nach Spinner einpassen lässt, indem die Kategorien der subjektiven Involvierung und der genauen Wahrnehmung hinzugezogen und ausgereizt werden.
Abstract (english): A light in the darkness. On the effect of the ludicial in computer games through the example of Candleman
Narrative video games differ from other media used in German language classes due to their distinctive receptions, which are focused on in this essay. In the sense of analysing video games, the question addressed is how playing itself can be described in terms of effects. In order to do this, the concept of ludic involvement is applied and examined exemplarily for its mode of operation. It becomes clear that this is dependent on understanding the video game itself as a system of mechanics, objects, goals, and general narrative elements. It is also shown that ludic involvement can be considered a fundamental category of further involvement strategies, highlighting the dependencies between ludic and emotional involvement. With regard to the goals of teaching-learning situations, it is specified that video games must be understood as methodical systems with dynamics that must be understood in terms of the impact of video games on the organism. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how this approach can be integrated into the concept of literary learning according to Spinner, involving and exploring the categories of subjective involvement and precise perception

Successful Aging on Instagram? Gender, Age, and the "Rise of the Granfluencer"
Get PDFThis article investigates the phenomenon of the granfluencer at the intersection between age and gender. At first sight, the granfluencer seems to work against the notion that old age is inevitably accompanied by decay and a lack of productiveness. Yet, as “grandparents” become influencers, it seems that productiveness can be described only in terms of a neoliberal market economy. Taking the social media persona of Baddie Winkle as a case in point, I suggest that Winkle can be seen as both confirming and subverting assumptions of age at one and the same time. Drawing on the work of Margaret Morganroth Gullette as well as Susan Sontag’s “The Double Standard of Aging,” this article reads Winkle as a potential example of “Successful Aging” and asks whether there are ways of growing old beyond the dictates of neoliberalism. At the same time, Winkle can be seen to disprove assumptions of the alleged unattractiveness of older women by openly flaunting her sexuality. This may earn her clicks, and at the same time makes us see age (and gender) in an entirely new light
Aboriginal Speculations: Queer Rhetoric, Disability, and Interspecies Conviviality in The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf
Get PDFThe Anthropocene looms large in the 21st century, and queer and disabled people continue to be exposed to harassment and discrimination. What do these issues have in common, though? In Ambelin Kwaymullina’s speculative fiction novel The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf (2012), queer discourse collaborates with, promotes, and diversifies a non-anthropocentric world order, simultaneously implicating a dis-/ability dialectic. This article brings together queer, disability, interspecies studies and literary analysis to explore how Kwaymullina’s young adult novel creates links between queerness and interspecies relations and how disability comes into play. The rhetoric used against children with so-called special abilities in the novel, who come to occupy the structural position of the queer in Kwaymullina’s narrative at the expense of those living with disabilities, as well as the role interspecies conviviality plays for future community construction are focal points of the article. For the latter part, in particular, this article draws on Aboriginal knowledge systems to explore how The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf weaves these marginalised epistemologies into literature and thus changes the field of speculative fiction

No full textMit Blick auf kognitive Aktivierung nehmen Aufgaben eine zentrale Stellung ein. In diesem Beitrag werden Gütekriterien für potenziell kognitiv aktivierende Aufgaben im Kontext eines sprachsensiblen Unterrichts aus einer Pluralität interdisziplinärer Zugänge diskutiert. Zur zielgerichteten Reflexion und Konzeption solcher Aufgabenformate wird ein mehrdimensionales Raster vorgestellt, das (angehende) Lehrpersonen dabei unterstützen kann, kognitiv aktivierende Aufgaben für einen sprachsensiblen Unterricht zu konzipieren – auch, wenn sie (noch) keine sprachdidaktischen Kenntnisse haben.
Tasks play a pivotal role regarding cognitive activation. This article presents a comprehensive discussion of quality criteria for tasks in the context of language-sensitive teaching from a multitude of interdisciplinary perspectives. A multidimensional grid is presented for the analysis and design of task formats, which can assist (prospective) teachers in developing language-sensitive cognitively activating tasks – even in the absence of prior knowledge of applied linguistics.Tasks play a pivotal role regarding cognitive activation in language-sensitive subject matter lessons. This article presents a comprehensive discussion of quality criteria for tasks in that context drawn from a multitude of interdisciplinary perspectives. No full textEinem multidimensionalen und dynamischen Begabungsverständnis folgend, das von Begabungsförderung als Talententwicklung ausgeht, muss Unterricht so gestaltet werden, dass allen Schüler*innen ermöglicht wird, ihre Potenziale und Begabungen zu entwickeln. In Kooperation zwischen Wissenschaft und Schulpraxis wurden Bausteine für einen potenzialorientierten und begabungsförderlichen Biologieunterricht erstellt. Im Beitrag werden die Bausteine theoretisch verortet und konkrete Beispiele vorgestellt.
In line with a multidimensional and dynamic understanding of giftedness, which assumes that the promotion of giftedness is talent development, teaching must be designed in such a way that all students are enabled to develop their potential and talents. In cooperation between science education and school practice, elements for potential- and talent-oriented biology education have been developed.
