Robust Design with Dynamic Features: Laboratory Level Case
A major trend in engineering arising from Taguchi methodology are the systems with dynamic characteristics, also called signal-response systems. This methodology is a basic tool which has a response that varies depending on level changes made in the factor called "signal", the classic example is the accelerator pedal car in which you get one acceleration response depending on the depth at which the pedal is pressed. The main objective of this methodology is to generate the dynamic response of the product that is robust to noise factors present in the system. In addition, it can improve the sensitivity of the product by using a control system. In this paper, an experiment using a prototype that simulates a control system is performed. The idea is that a student perform this work in a laboratory in order to understand and apply the concepts of robust design with dynamic characteristics
Condition estimation of carbon steel using a Neuro-Fuzzy system and imagen processing
Plant volatiles cause direct, induced and associational resistance in common bean to the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum lindemuthianum
Plants that express resistance to herbivores emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can trigger resistance responses in undamaged neighbours. Recent reports indicate that VOCs can also trigger the resistance to pathogens, an effect that might be due to different mechanisms: the priming of an induced expression of resistance genes in the receiver or direct inhibitory effects on microbial pathogens that cause a passive ‘associational’ resistance in the VOC-exposed plant.
We conclude that VOCs are involved in the resistance of bean to fungal pathogens. They can contribute to the direct resistance in the emitter itself, and resistance phenotypes of neighbouring receiver plants can result from induced as well as associational resistance. Plant VOCs play multiple roles in the resistance of plants to microbial pathogens
New Implementations of Data Mining in a Plethora of Human Activities
Data Mining is a discovery process in large and complex data set, refers to extracting knowledge from data bases. Data mining is a multidisciplinary field with many techniques.
One of the reasons why the Data Mining techniques are widely used is that there is a need to transform a large amount of data on information and knowledge useful. Having a large amount of data and not have tools that can process a phenomenon has been described as rich in data but poverty in information (Han & Kamber, 2006). This steady growth of data, which is stored in large databases, has exceeded the ability of human beings to understand. Moreover, various problems they might present a constant stream of data, which may be more difficult to analyze the power of information
Evaluation of Microbial Load in Oropharyngeal Mucosa from Tannery Workers
Animal skin provides an ideal medium for the propagation of microorganisms and it is used like raw material in the tannery and footware industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate and identify the microbial load in oropharyngeal mucosa of tannery employees. Methods: The health risk was estimated based on the identification of microorganisms found in the oropharyngeal mucosa samples. The study was conducted in a tanners group and a control group. Samples were taken from oropharyngeal mucosa and inoculated on plates with selective medium. In the samples, bacteria were identified by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis and the yeasts through a presumptive method. In addition, the sensitivity of these microorganisms to antibiotics/antifungals was evaluated.
Results: The identified bacteria belonged to the families Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Neisseriaceae,Alcaligenaceae, Moraxellaceae, and Xanthomonadaceae, of which some species are considered as pathogenic or opportunistic microorganisms; these bacteria were not present in the control group. Forty-two percent of bacteria identified in the tanners group are correlated with respiratory diseases. Yeasts were also identified, including the following species: Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida albicans, and Candida krusei. Regarding the sensitivity test of bacteria identified in the tanners group, 90% showed sensitivity to piperacillin/tazobactam, 87% showed sensitivity to ticarcillin/clavulanic acid, 74% showed sensitivity to ampicillin/sulbactam, and 58% showed sensitivity to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Conclusion: Several of the bacteria and yeast identified in the oropharyngeal mucosa of tanners have been correlated with infections in humans and have already been reported as airborne microorganisms
in this working environment, representing a health risk for workers
