    Predicting the Start of the Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) Female Adult Biting Season Using the Spring Temperature in Japan

    Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) is distributed widely and is common in much of Japan. In Japan, female adults begin to bite in between April and June, except in the southern subtropics where the mosquito has no dormant period. It is difficult to estimate the first Ae. albopictus biting day because it varies annually depending on the location. Over several years, we surveyed the mosquitoes at different locations that covered a range of warmer to cooler areas of Japan. We found an association between the timing of first biting day by Ae. albopictus and spring temperature. In spring months, the strongest correlation was found with mean April temperatures, followed by March. Based on these data, it may, therefore, be possible to apply a simple formula to predict the timing of the first biting day at various geographical locations in Japan. Forecasting maps were created using a simple prediction formula. We found that the first biting day for Ae. albopictus changed depending on early spring temperatures for each year. There was an approximate 20-d difference in first biting day between years with warmer and cooler springs. This prediction model will provide useful insight for planning and practice of Ae. albopictus control programs, targeting larvae and adults, in temperate regions globally.ArticleJournal of Medical Entomology.54(6):1519-1524(2017)journal articl

    Flight density of aquatic insect fauna over river water surface in the middle reaches of the Shinano River, mainly among Caddisflies (Trichoptera).

    We focused on the relative number of flying adult caddisflies on the river surface captured by sticky board traps with the aim of elucidating differences in the distribution pattern of caddisfly larvae along the slope in the middle reaches of the Shinano River. The individual number of adult caddisflies caught increased from April and decreased from October. Even in the same middle reaches of a river, there was a large difference geographically in the species captured. Hydroptila sp. was caught mainly downstream of the Taishyobashi Bridge, Psychomyia acutipennis (Ulmer 1908) in the vicinity of the Taishyobashi Bridge, and Stenopsyche marmorata Navás 1920 upstream of the Awasabashi Bridge. It is known that the slope of the Shinano River bed suddenly becomes less and the flow rate slower in the area from the Taishyobashi Bridge to the Awasabashi Bridge, and it was shown that the species composition and number of aquatic insects caught changes with the change in the slope of the river bed.ArticleZoosymposia.10:203-213(2016)journal articl

    諏訪湖沖帯におけるユスリカ類幼虫の水平分布とオオユスリカ個体群の遺伝的構造

    長野県の諏訪湖では,湖水の浄化に伴って1990年代の終わりから生物群集が大きく変化し,湖内におけるユスリカ類の幼虫の分布や密度にも大きな変化が予想された。本研究では,その実態を明らかにするために,湖の沖帯全域でユスリカ類の分布と密度を調べた。また,沖帯における優占種の一つであるオオユスリカについて,遺伝的構造の解明を試みた。2013年3月に,沖合の17地点で調査を行った結果,オオユスリカとアカムシユスリカの幼虫の平均密度は,それぞれ600個体m-2,および900個体m-2であった。諏訪湖における現在のユスリカ類幼虫の生息密度は,湖の水質が改善し始めた2000年代初頭に比べるとやや増加していると推定された。中でもオオユスリカ幼虫の増加は顕著であった。諏訪湖沖帯のオオユスリカ幼虫についてミトコンドリアCOI(658bp)の塩基配列を解読した結果, 8つのハプロタイプが検出され,水深が深い地点ほど多くのハプロタイプが見られた。諏訪湖産オオユスリカでの配列は,茨城県産や琵琶湖産を含む他の日本産のオオユスリカとは極めて類似していたが,ロシア産のオオユスリカとは大きく異なっていた。Article陸水学雑誌.78(1):3-11(2016)journal articl

    Changes in the species composition and density of caddisflies (Trichoptera) after an excavation work in the middle reaches of the Shinano River, Japan

    We evaluated the effect of riverbed excavation on the macroinvertebrate community in the middle reaches of the Shinano River, Japan. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected at a treatment site, created by excavation of the riverbed, over a 98 d period. We compared the density and diversity of caddisfly larvae collected at the treatment site to a control site, located upriver. Three of 10 species found at the control site were not found at the treatment site. Furthermore, the Shannon-Wiener species diversity index (H') was lower at treatment site, although the total caddisfly density was similar to the control site by Day 98. The three most abundant species at control site were Psychomyia acutipennis, Potamyia chinensis, and Hydropsyche orientalis. The density of all three species was initially low at the treatment site following the excavation (Day 1). Beginning at Day 69, the density of Ps. acutipennis began to increase at the treatment site and was more than twice as high as at the control site by Day 98. Similarly, the density of Po. chinensis increased between Day 59 and 98 but did not exceed the density at the control site. In contrast, H. orientalis was rarely observed at the treatment site. Our results suggest that large-scale removal of the riverbed affected several key physical parameters and changed the density and species diversity of the trichopteran community.Article日本環境動物昆虫学会誌.20(1):17-26(2009)journal articl

    富士五湖西湖におけるミズムシAsellus (s. str.) filgendorfi Bovallius (Asellidae; Isopoda) の水平分布

    西湖湖底に生息するミズムシ類の水平分布と生息密度、現存量などを明らかにし、過去のデータと比較することにより、湖底環境の変化を推測することを目的として、2009年3月に湖全域にわたる水平分布調査を行った。全18調査地点のうち、Asellus (s. str.) hilgendorfi Bovallius が捕獲されたのは7地点で、最大1170±1054匹/㎡ (St.7;水深29.6m) であった。捕獲された地点のうち、最も水深の深い地点は58.0m (St.10;119±68匹/㎡) で、浅い地点は29.6mであった。密度の高い地域は湖中央部の北岸に集中していた。Miyadi (1932) の報告と比較すると、A. hilgendorfi の水深分布が近年、水深60m 以深では分布しなくなったこと、分布域が狭くなっていること、最大個体数密度も浅いほうにシフトしていること、などが明らかとなり、60m 以深の湖底環境に変化が生じていることが示唆された。Article日本環境動物昆虫学会誌.21(4):231-237(2010)journal articl

    Adult Chironomidae (Diptera) emerging from eutrophic lakes or polluted water bodies are a severe nuisance and cause economic problems. In the Lake Suwa area, mass flights of adult chironomid midges, particularly Chironomus plumosus and Propsilocerus akamusi, have occurred frequently, causing problems in the daily life of local residents and to the tourist industry. I have tried to clarify the biological and hygiene problems caused by these mass flights. To control adult midges, (1) studies on the flight behavior and resting habit of midges were carried out, and (2) field trial trapping control methods for midges by attracting them to lights and sounds were investigated.
