On the Readability of the English Technical Writing Test: With Special Reference to the Textbooks Used in Technical High Schools and Colleges of Technology in Japan
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the difficulty of the English Technical Writing Test (KOUGYOU-EIKEN) and compare it with the textbooks used in technical high schools and colleges in terms of readability. Since readability is a factor that helps ESL learners learn English effectively and understand target materials easily, it is important to investigate the targeted difficulty level of the test administrated to applicants and the textbooks they use. Additionally, McGrath(2002:11,2006:171) emphasizes the importance of textbooks in a teaching-learning situation. This study examines the readability of the English Technical Writing Test, and that of textbooks used in technical high schools and readability formulas: the Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Flesch-Kincaid Formula. The results are then discussed in the light of previous studies. In conclusion, the present study clarifies the current situation and presents suggestions for further studies and improvements.departmental bulletin pape

"Blood" in D.H. Lawrence and O. Wilde
Get PDFLawrence and Wilde found something special in "blood." Lawrence had a firm belief in "blood" symbolizing primitive "daemonic" energy. Lawrence's blood operates as energy to encourage one to transcend individuality and acquire "a greater life." With profound insight, he asserts that an invisible world of "blood-consciousness" underlies the visible world. Wilde too stresses "blood" as seen in "The Nightingale and the Rose," "The Happy Prince." or "The Selfish Giant." The "blood," which is inseparable from death, is without fail shed for the sake of others; it is the so-called sacrificial one. He sees beauty and truth in the moment life speakles at its maximum. Both of them turn their eyes to and recognize great values in things invisible, which the "blood" represents. They were distrustful of society in which they lived, and irritated with the people who belived in practical worth or who are always self-consious, never forgetting themselves. Almost all their works serve as critique of the times in which they lived. Get PDFここ数年の間でInternetの世界はまた大きく様変わりしつつある。Cloudと呼ばれるサービスの広がりにより、データや文書の取扱が変化しつつある。光通信網の定着により通信速度もInternet普及開始の1990年初頭に比べ驚くほどの改善がもたらされ、大容量のデータが短時間でやり取りできるようになった。またそれに加え、streaming技術やデータ圧縮技術の発達によって、動画の配信もかなりストレスなく行えるような環境がそろってきた。皆さんがよくご存じの様々な音楽配信、YouTubeやUstreamなどの画像配信、Skypeという画像付き通信（テレビ電話）などがその恩恵に預かっている。本稿で取り上げるUstreamとは何か簡単に説明すると、個人でもインターネット上で動画のライブ配信をすることのできるサービスである。有償のサービスはあるが、無料で使える。方法と授業への応用の2部構成で述べる。つまり、Ustreamという動画配信をどのようにして実現をするかについて紹介し、このUstreamを英語教育にどのように利用するか利用例を紹介する。本稿は、2012年度本学で開催された外国語教育メディア学会（LET）九州・沖縄支部研究大会にて筆者が行ったワークショップの内容を中心に加筆しまとめたものである。departmental bulletin pape
Characteristic of the Commons Use of Okinawa Awase Tideland Village
Get PDF本研究は泡瀬干潟に着目して環境保全の視点から地域住民のコモンズ利用に関する歴史やローカル知識の検討をとおして海へのイメージ形成過程やその背景について明らかにした。泡瀬干潟は従来の定義には含まれていない日本唯一のサンゴ礁干潟である。また、一般的に地先漁場は地域漁業協同組合を中心に地域住民たちの入会地として共同利用、管理されている。ところが、泡瀬干潟の利用主体は地域住民や漁民だけではなく、周辺地域の高齢者から子供に至るまで多様である。つまり誰でも利用できる皆の海として、自家消費や遊びなど私的活動の場となっている。しかし、その管理の主体は誰も持っていない。そのため起きる干潟の劣化問題や女性と干潟とのかかわりについては今後の研究課題にしたい。departmental bulletin pape
Investigating Teacher and Student Attitudes towards MEXT-approved English Textbooks in Japan:A Preliminary Study
Get PDFEnhancing communication abilities has been the goal for English learning in the Course of Study for Foreign Languages as determined by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Technology (MEXT). However, this official goal does not match the classroom experiences of teachers and students. From the teachers' point of view, students expect to learn the skills needed to perform well on entrance examinations. In addition, MEXT's introduction of the evaluation system in 2005 has negative influence on students' communication abilities in English lessons. Teachers are caught in a vicious cycle of being forced to meet the fllood of requirements imposed by MEXT, students, and the evaluation system. This paper examines the perceptions of the three stakeholders (MEXT, students, and teachers ) toward English education in Japan. Students' attitudes are gathered through questionnaires and teachers' perceptions are collected in interviews. Findings reveal that the entrance examinations, a negative backwash effect, and the evaluation system constitute barriers to English education in Japan. Results are discussed in light of previous studies, including Prodromou (1995) and Kyoiku Souken (2005). In conclusion, the current situation of the teachers is clarified. In addition, suggestions for further studies and improvements are provided.departmental bulletin pape
