Translation Procedures of the Subtitle of the Ant-Man Movie: A Pragmatic Study

    No full text
This study investigates translation procedures and pragmatic implications in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Ant-Man. Using Newmark's translation procedure framework and supported by the pragmatic theories of Austin et al., Searle, and Cutting, this study aims to identify the types of translation procedures applied, determine the most dominant procedures, and analyze how they preserve meaning in context. Employing descriptive qualitative methods with content analysis, the dialogue data were coded and then interpreted through Newmark's translation procedure theory, Austin and Searle's speech acts theory, and Cutting's context classification theory.  114 subtitle sentences were examined, of which 75 were categorized as pragmatic utterances. The findings present that ten out of eighteen procedures were identified, with Modulation being the most dominant (42.11%), followed by Couplets/Triplets (22.81%) and Literal Translation (13.16%). Pragmatic analysis indicates that procedures such as Modulation, Couplets, Functional Equivalent, Cultural Equivalent, and Synonymy have played an important role in maintaining humor, sarcasm, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances ensuring that the communicative intent is conveyed effectively to the Indonesian audience. This study contribute to bridging the analysis of translation procedures and pragmatic interpretation in audiovisual translation in terms of variations in equivalent meanings based on context. Furthermore, practically, the findings of this study can be useful for translators or subtitlers to pay more attention to the equivalence of meaning, not just based on the literal meaning, to avoid audience confusion

Analysis of Students’ Errors and Writing Flow In Example Paragraph Written By The First Semester Students of English Department At The University of Mataram

    No full text
This study investigates the types and causes of grammatical errors found in example paragraph writing by first-semester students of the English Education Program at the University of Mataram during the 2024/2025 academic year. The participants were fifteen low-achieving students with beginner to intermediate levels of English proficiency, as determined by their writing course scores. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design, as this approach enabled the researcher to describe and interpret the data in depth without numerical generalization (Creswell, 2018). Data were collected from students’ written paragraphs and semi-structured interviews to explore both linguistic difficulties and cognitive causes of errors. Findings revealed 22 total errors, with misformation (45.4%) as the most dominant type, followed by omission (31.8%), misordering (13.7%), and addition (9.1%). The main sources of errors were translation habits, first language interference, and carelessness. These findings theoretically support interlanguage and error analysis theories, indicating that learner errors represent natural stages of language development. The study contributes to EFL writing pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of guided grammar practice, peer-editing, and continuous feedback to enhance students’ grammatical accuracy and coherence in example paragraph writing

Speech Acts And Their Implicatures In The Main Characters Of The Swimmers; A Film Directed By Sally El Hosaini

    No full text
This study investigates pragmatic features in the 2022 film The Swimmers, focusing on the speech acts and conversational implicatures employed by the main characters, Sara and Yusra Mardini. Addressing a gap in previous research that rarely combines these two frameworks within a single cinematic discourse, this study explores how language functions as a reflection of emotion, power, and social reality in the film. Using a qualitative approach, 30 utterances in 12 key descriptive scenes (approximately 45 minutes of dialogue) were analyzed based on Searle's speech act theory and Grice's conversational implicatures. The research findings reveal five types of speech acts: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative, with assertive acts being the most frequent. Implicatures primarily emerge through violations of the maxims of quality and relation, which convey hidden meanings and emotional tension. The results highlight the crucial role of pragmatic strategies in establishing character identity and narrative depth. Pedagogically, this study demonstrates that film dialogue can serve as authentic material to enhance the pragmatic competence of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, while also contributing to film studies by illustrating how cinematic language reflects real-world communication

    No full text
This qualitative single-case ethnoscience study explored how preservice science teachers reconstructed indigenous knowledge from local artisanal practices into potential school science learning resources. Conducted in an Ethnoscience course in the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Qamarul Huda Badaruddin Bagu, Central Lombok, the project adopted an ethnoscience-oriented project-based practicum (EthnoPjBL) in which one intact class collaborated with artisans involved in knife forging, clay brick and roof-tile production, herbal medicine and jamu kunyit asam preparation, palm-sugar and sweet tuak processing, and plastic and bamboo weaving. Data from participant observation, field notes, interviews, structured analysis tables, student scientific report drafts, concept maps, reflective worksheets, and course documents were analysed through thematic coding, constant comparison, and concept map interpretation. The findings show that preservice teachers identified dense clusters of phenomena, for example heat transfer, phase change, mixtures, plant physiology, microbial processes, and structural mechanics, mapped these onto canonical concepts and junior and senior secondary curriculum topics, and produced curriculum-linked representations that support contextualised and integrated science learning while developing epistemological awareness, ethical sensitivity, and capacity to pedagogically mobilise indigenous knowledge

    No full text
This study aims to develop and analyze a computer-based Smart Assessment system integrated with a deep learning pedagogical approach for assessing the English language skills of junior high school students in Merauke. The system was implemented using the Quizizz platform as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), incorporating three core principles of deep learning: meaningful learning, mindful learning, and joyful learning. The research employed the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) and involved 45 junior high school students during the field implementation phase. Smart Assessment was applied in regular English assessment activities, enabling students to complete tests digitally while teachers monitored performance and results in real time. Several challenges emerged during implementation, including limited internet connectivity, differences in students’ digital literacy levels, and teachers’ initial adaptation to technology-based assessment. Despite these constraints, the system proved effective in facilitating teachers to conduct assessments more efficiently and accurately, while providing immediate and automated feedback that supported students’ reflective learning processes. Item quality analysis was conducted using Classical Test Theory (CTT) with the support of RStudio software. The results demonstrated very high instrument reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.961). Most test items were classified as having moderate difficulty, with good to very good discrimination power, and all distractors functioned effectively. These findings confirm that the developed instrument meets acceptable psychometric standards for educational assessment. Implementation of Smart Assessment shows strong potential to support objective, efficient, and engaging English language assessment, while enhancing teachers’ assessment practices and improving students’ learning experiences. This system offers a practical and innovative solution for English language assessment in the context of digital and 21st-century education, particularly in remote and border regions
