Reducing city household water consumption with internet of things devices

    Get PDF
This research aims to prove that inexpensive Internet of Things devices can be used to monitor domestic water consumption, thus lowering water usage, educating consumers about better water habits and preventing or detecting leaks. Such devices can also expose their information to the local water utility company, which can then use these data points in their decision-making. This paper is built on direct experience and research with Home Assistant, a free and open-source Internet of Things device management system, which allows for detailed statistics to be compiled at database level about water consumption, including the effects of optimizing daily usage. The main method employed was a case study comparing household water consumption before and after sensors and valves were implemented, with 4 stages: 1 - no sensor info, 2 - with sensors but no changes made to habits, 3 - sensor info analysis, 4 - changes made to habits based on the previous analysis, 5 - before/after result comparison. Key results included: 20% water consumption reduction after daily habit changes; broken pipe smartphone notification while residents were away, alongside automatic water closure to the household; detection of leaks which were too small to be visible at water meter level, but nevertheless existed. Implications of the study for smart city practitioners are that even inexpensive water sensors and valves can significantly reduce water usage and prevent incidents, quickly paying for themselves and allowing for a more sustainable level of water consumption at city level. The value of this paper is that it shows how a combination of off-the-shelf sensors and valves and free software can be used at household or even city level to bring intelligent water management to communities which might be suffering from the effects of climate change or other causes of water scarcity

Using a modern honeypot model to defend smart cities and provide early detection to APT and ransomware attacks

Ransomware and advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks are proliferating on critical infrastructure in cities and nation-states. Holding a whole smart city for ransom using a combined cyberattack would, just a few years ago, have been the stuff of science fiction movies. Yet today sophisticated hacking techniques, the ease of use and availability of RaaS (Ransomware as a Service) and the vast vulnerabilities of computer systems, web applications, databases and various IoT-connected devices exposed in the wild are all creating a significant challenge for security teams. Such a movie may become reality. Some security teams in various sectors use active defense technology and deception security to deceive, trick bait, and lure hackers towards fake assets. Regardless of vulnerabilities in the wild, it helps detect the breach at an early stage and allows faster threat remediation before it is too late. In this study, we use a descriptive literature review to explore various real-life breach cases which occurred in smart cities. We use content analysis to detect similarities, patterns, significant correlations, and relationships between keywords. A synthesis analysis is conducted and the modern honeypot triangle model is suggested to reduce the risk of future similar breaches by deceiving cybercriminals and providing security teams with extensive early warning detection capabilities and intelligence about the attackers’ techniques and tactics. Finally, we provide recommendations for further analysis

Smart administrations are not only about digitization and the move towards smart cities and e-government systems, which is why the objective of this paper is to highlight the role of a human resource to face the challenges of new technologies, especially the role of digital talent in supporting the transformation of public administration, as well as the role of citizens as direct beneficiaries of the services offered by public administrations. Their importance in the public sector cannot be analysed without also highlighting the implications for the professionalisation of human resource management. The use of artificial intelligence and new technologies has a direct impact on all those involved in the process, and their successful implementation depends on the ability of the staff and citizens served to exploit their full potential and keep pace with developments. It is necessary for Romania to adhere to European values, in the spirit of building sustainable, digital and green communities that increase the quality of life of the beneficiaries. From this perspective, it is significant to analyse the situation in Romania, giving an overview of the future of public administration, but also of society as a whole, in terms of the role of digital talent and a digitally educated population in the transformation of society in relation to the latest technologies. To the detriment of ongoing studies and research on the subject, the transition to smart government is an expanding topic, which is why studies have not been exhausted and require constant updating

The economic and social impacts of smart cities: multi-stakeholder pre-study results

    Get PDF
Smart cities are getting increasingly popular and being seen as one answer to several challenges. The smart city framework is seen as a popular answer to numerous challenges. There is no common definition of a smart city and the theoretical understanding is framed in multiple ways in practice. To better understand the phenomenon of smart cities it is important to see how it is viewed in practice by different stakeholders. Objectives This paper contributes to collecting and analyzing the stakeholders\u27 visions to develop the definition of smart cities and classify their social and economic effects as a basis for further advanced study in this direction. Prior work The previous findings have determined the double-sided effects of smart cities in social and economic domains that could be balanced through different tools. In terms of the fundamental importance of ensuring citizen-oriented and sustainable utilization of smart city as a tool purporting to improve quality of life, it is needed to critically assess how stakeholders perceive these impacts and what tools could be applied to prevent negative outcomes. Methodology The paper applies a literature review, in-depth interviews with the smart city experts and survey answers analysis involving the city stakeholders including local and regional authorities and the real citizens to determine the personalized visions of smart city definition and impacts as well as open source analysis. Results Based on the data collected, the classification of the social and economic impacts of smart cities is proposed as well as study-based definition of smart city is provided. It is argued that considering social and economic impacts of smart cities needs further attention in terms of the multi-stakeholder perspective and continuation of the work started in this paper. In doing so, the paper does not only contribute to the theoretical comprehension of smart city but provides the basis for further strategy development to maximize social and economic positives of its application while minimizing the negatives

    Cum sa realizam orasul inteligent?

    No full text

    Get PDF

    Scenariu privind administrarea Capitalei

Astfel, ele confera spatiului administrativ noi provocari. In timp ce interesul pentru democratia institutionala pare a se reduce printr-un declin lent, dar constant, vizibil in participarea cetatenilor la vot, activitatile de miscari sociale iau amploare si schimba interfata politico- administrativa.
