Gertrude Bonnin on Sexual Morality
No full textThis paper examines attitudes to sexual morality held by the Yankton Dakota author and activist Gertrude Bonnin (1876–1938), better known by her penname Zitkála-Šá (Red Bird in Lakota). Bonnin’s concerns encompass several themes: the victimization of Indian women, disintegration of Native courtship rituals, sexual threats posed by peyote use, and the predatory nature of Euro-American men. This critique as a whole — in which a ‘white invasion,’ in her words, leads to a corruption of Native sexuality — sometimes produces inconsistencies, particularly regarding Bonnin’s statements on the alleged sexual perils of peyote. Her investigations into the Oklahoma guardianship scandals of the 1920s, however, strongly buttress recent research by Sarah Deer (2015), whose study, The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America, highlights the tragic aspects of Native-white sexual relations under United States settler-colonialism
Implicit Arguments in Ugandan English
No full textIn standard British/American English, some transitive verbs, which are ontologically specified for objects, may be used with the objects not overtly expressed (for example, leave), while other transitive verbs do not permit this syntactic behavior (for example, vacate). The former have been referred to as verbs that allow implicit arguments. This study shows that while verbs such as vacate do not ideally allow implicit arguments in standard British/American English, this is permitted in Ugandan English (a non-native variety), thereby highlighting structural asymmetries between British/American English and Ugandan English, owing mainly to substrate influence and analogization. The current study highlights those structural asymmetries and ultimately uncovers some characteristic features in the structural nativization process of English in Uganda, thereby contributing to the growing larger discourse meant to fill the gaps that had characterized World Englishes scholarship, where thorough delineations of Ugandan English have been virtually absent

In parallel, an external investigation on selected companies’ best practices research was also initiated by the author in the area of ILCM. Various organizations in the power plant / energy industry and similar industries segments having product or business profi les similar to ALSTOM Thermal Power were researched and documented, including internet, own public information and selected company interviews. All of this work was complemented by an additional investigation of academia, scientifi c conferences and management literatures

The choice of bachelor’s program in telecommunications and computer technology
Get PDFThe aim of the article is to show the influence of the graduated secondary education for the choice of the bachelor's program "Telecommunications and Computer Technology" from the Telecommunication’s Department, NBU. The article presents some of the results of a survey conducted among students of the bachelor's program. The presented data are for students who started their education during the academic years from 2016 to 2019. As a result of the study, it was found that the students enrolled in the bachelor's program most often have graduated from vocational technical high schools in this field. Together with graduates of other vocational high schools, they are approximately half of the students who choose this bachelor's program.The study will contribute to anticipating the preliminary preparation of students who have chosen a bachelor's program in "Telecommunications and Computer Technology" and to improve their future education
Methods and means for digital transformation of physical objects
Get PDFThe research aims to present main methods of digital transformations of physical objects by the means for 3D modelling and 3D scanning. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of laser scanning and the nature of the triangulation methods on which it is based. It is explained how the reliability of the obtained results depends on the calibration process that precedes the 3D scanning of a physical object. Special attention is paid to the technical and software preparation that precedes the 3D scanning process. The practical research is realized using a physical object suitable in terms of construction, shape and size. For the digital transformations is purposefully chosen a real existing spherical robot, which serves as a basis for comparison in assessing the effectiveness of the described methods, as well as the quality and realism of the obtained digital models. The scientific and applied contributions are expressed in a comparative analysis of practical methods, which contains an algorithm of steps suitable for educational purposes for the implementation of the described work processes
