The article examines Julia Kristeva’s novel Murder in Byzantium, in which a typical structuralist provincial-imperial model of the world order is deconstructed from the standpoint of post-structuralism. It is assumed that the appeal to the history of Byzantium has certain autobiographical grounds. In this way, Kristeva demonstrates the relativity of the concepts of ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ from a historical perspective: Byzantium, Bulgaria, France, the United States eventually dissolve into the “global village”, which is embodied in the novel in the image of Santa Barbara. Keywords: province; empire; post-structuralism; deconstruction; Julia Kristeva; Murder in Byzantium. The article examines Julia Kristeva’s novel Murder in Byzantium, in which a typical structuralist provincial-imperial model of the world order is deconstructed from the standpoint of post-structuralism.

The article problematises the connection between the verbal representation and the visual representation in the first Bulgarian edition of Inferno (1906). It aims to demonstrate that Gustavе Doré’s drawings, which illustrate Konstantin Velichkov’s translation, contribute to the better reception of Dante’s masterpiece. Thus, I will try to explore the relationship between the text and the iconic paratext, between the interlingual translation and the intersemiotic translation, by bringing out the empathy of the translator. Apocalyptic Dimensions: Seeing the Beginning from the End

In analysing apocalyptic discourse, it is essential to distinguish the spatial and temporal dimensions in which a catastrophe exerts influence, paves the way for the development of a particular way of thinking, and accordingly builds an appropriate and distinct worldview. My goal is to explore some of the consequences of putting discourse into action to affect political or social change. It is important to understand how certain beliefs and conventions are constructed through the use of catastrophic language, symbolism, and imagery. To this end, I will examine how apocalyptic discourse shapes the way people see the world around them, using as examples works by Mario Sironi, Ludwig Meidner, and Stanley Donwood, while comparing them to the Benjaminean notion of “destructive character”, emphasising how the visual discourse structures space and time to unveil novel aspects of reality. Keywords: apocalypse; catastrophic imaginary; non-places; visual art; creative destructio

In literature just as in the art of painting, the representation of the romantic or pictorial hero is dependent on an antihero who designates, by the narration of facts or by the evocation of pictorial signs, the relationship, the influence or effect of one on the other. In Zola\u27s tale The Convent we have tried to analyse the relationship between two little girls with different aspects in their behaviour by showing the link between their descriptions and the paintings by Manet. Since Zola and Manet are considered to be very good friends, this explains the inspiration they drew on from each other through their literary and artistic creations which contain echoes and correspondences, among other things, in the evocation of the status of the hero and the antihero. Keywords: Zola; Manet; hero, antihero; correspondences; education; identit

Emma – That’s Me! (Vazov and Flaubert) The article aims to answer a few questions related to the autobiographical and literary basis of Vazov’s short story Emma, its hidden correlation and opposition to Flaubert’s Emma from the novel Madame Bovary, as well as to trace some “bovarystic” plots in the prose of the antibovaryst Vazov.                                                                          Key words: fiction; intertextuality; realism; bovarysm

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. From Page to Screen. The Making of a Classic. Transformation of Gender Relations

The aim of this article is to explore how the film adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s translated the literary original into cinematic language. My claim is that the essential transfigurations ensued in terms of gender relations. The question of what motivated them, and how they impacted the cult status which the movie work acquired, is approached by focusing on the transformations from the perspective of the dramatic structure. Through the use of script development tools: type of narration, thematic premise, central question, controlling idea, mediation, protagonists, setting, and the ways in which casting, style of cinematography and music interact with them, I will attempt to pinpoint and analyse the key differences.                                                                                Keywords: screen adaptation; dramatic structure; gender roles; integration into society                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Закуска в „Тифани“.
