    Short-Term l-arginine Treatment Mitigates Early Damage of Dermal Collagen Induced by Diabetes

    Changes in the structural properties of the skin due to collagen alterations are an important factor in diabetic skin complications. Using a combination of photonic methods as an optic diagnostic tool, we investigated the structural alteration in rat dermal collagen I in diabetes, and after short-term l-arginine treatment. The multiplex approach shows that in the early phase of diabetes, collagen fibers are partially damaged, resulting in the heterogeneity of fibers, e.g., "patchy patterns" of highly ordered/disordered fibers, while l-arginine treatment counteracts to some extent the conformational changes in collagen-induced by diabetes and mitigates the damage. Raman spectroscopy shows intense collagen conformational changes via amides I and II in diabetes, suggesting that diabetes-induced structural changes in collagen originate predominantly from individual collagen molecules rather than supramolecular structures. There is a clear increase in the amounts of newly synthesized proline and hydroxyproline after treatment with l-arginine, reflecting the changed collagen content. This suggests that it might be useful for treating and stopping collagen damage early on in diabetic skin. Our results demonstrate that l-arginine attenuates the early collagen I alteration caused by diabetes and that it could be used to treat and prevent collagen damage in diabetic skin at a very early stage.M224.640711

    Genetic variability of Roma population in Serbia: The perspective from autosomal STR markers

    Genetic variability of Roma population was shaped by the strong influence of genetic drift and gene flow during the migrations from their ancestral homeland in Indian subcontinent towards Europe. In addition, social stigmatization in many European countries, as a consequence of different cultural heritage and social practices, induced further genetic differentiation and sub structuring within the population. Although many populations genetic studies on European Roma were carried out, the genetic structure of the Serbian Roma has not been described yet, since only the modest number of individuals from this territory was analyzed. The main aim of this study was the characterization of genetic variability of the Roma and the assessment of intrapopulation genetic differentiation based on the analysis of 21 autosomal STR loci of 259 self-identified unrelated individuals from Serbia. Intrapopulation analysis revealed divergence of Roma groups illustrating the effect of the historical events after their arrival on Balkan Peninsula and emphasizing significance of the religious affiliation on admixture with autochthonous population. Genetic distance analysis showed the greatest similarity of the studied population with the Middle Eastern populations, while South Asian and European population were more distant. Our results demonstrate that Roma groups in this region of Balkan Peninsula do not represent completely isolated, but rather admixed populations with different proportion of gene flow with other Roma and non-Roma groups.M211.810

    The endemic Dinaric centipede Lithobius remyi Jawłowski, 1933, one of the rarest cave-dwelling centipedes in the Balkan Peninsula, is recorded for the first time in Serbia. An adult male from Karamakaz Cave in the Serbian Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija was discovered in a private collection. The specimen is briefly described and illustrated with all taxonomically important morphological features. The currently known geographical distribution of the species is shown on the map.2434394

    The genus Monoctonus Haliday, 1833 is a small group which consists of 24 species worldwide. In South Korea, Chang and Youn (1983) recorded one species, M.similis Starý & Schlinger, 1967, but the evidence for identification of this species is doubtful and further confirmation is required (personal communication with Prof. Jong-Cheol Paik).M231.3e1194761

    Three new alien freshwater gastropods found in Serbian waters (Gastropoda, Tateidae and Planorbidae)

    In this article, we report on the first findings and discuss the presence of three alien freshwater gastropods in Serbian waters, namely Potamopyrgus antipodarum (J. E. Gray, 1843), Planorbella cf. duryi (Wetherby, 1879) and Menetus dilatatus (A. Gould, 1843). Of these, only P. cf. duryi was found exclusively in a greenhouse, while the other two were found in the field. In addition, we discuss the morphological and anatomical traits on which we have based the identification of P. cf. duryi.M230.617918646
