    Recycling honey bee drone brood for sustainable beekeeping

    Pollination by insects is vital for global agriculture, with honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) being the most important pollinators. Honey bees are exposed to numerous stressors, including disease, pesticides, and inadequate nutrition, resulting in significant colony losses. This study investigates the use of drone brood to mitigate these problems. Drone brood, which is normally discarded during varroa mite (Varroa destructor, Anderson and Trueman) management, is rich in proteins, fats, and essential minerals. We compared drone brood with an already suggested pollen supplement (Tenebrio [Tenebrio molitor L.] flour). The results indicate that drone brood flour is a viable source of proteins, fats, and minerals and is potentially antimicrobial due to its high content of elements with known antimicrobial properties. It meets the nutritional needs of honey bees while mitigating the effects of varroa mites. The use of drone brood flour can provide high-quality beeswax, surplus of pollen, and improve bee health, which promotes sustainable beekeeping.M212.

    This study proposes a novel nomenclatural combination and establishes a previously unrecognized synonym. We have also designated lectotypes for Pedicu- laris brachyodonta and P. heterodonta. Our research identifies three vascular plant taxa as new additions to the Serbian flora and confirms the occurrence of four species within the country. Furthermore, one native plant taxon is reported as new to the territory of Serbia proper and one spontaneous hybrid for the Kosovo and Metohija province. Conversely, we have refuted the reported presence of five taxa within Serbia or its constituent regions.M51931321

    This study investigates quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions through two avenues: high-p frameworks and hydrodynamic modeling. Using the TRENTo model, we find that the p=0 value aligns well with high-p data, in agreement with Bayesian analysis of the low-p regime. While adjusting p values may improve a fit to a particular high-p observable, it does not permit an earlier onset of transverse expansion.M22044906110

    Novel insights into the conservation physiology and ex situ conservation of the threatened and rare semi-aquatic moss Drepanocladus lycopodioides

    The rare and threatened semi-aquatic moss Drepanocladus lycopodioides (Amblystegiaceae) was the subject of growth optimization under ex-situ axenic laboratory conditions. The positioning of the plantlets on media, media types as well as selected growth regulators and sugars were parameters tested in optimizing growth promotion of this species in captivity. Out of the tested media types, the KNOP medium and the upright positioning of the explants were the best for propagation and biomass production of D. lycopodioides. The addition of sugars had no significant effect on this moss development axenically, while exogenously applied Benzylaminopurine (BAP) at a concentration of 3 µM induced the development of archegonia on the sterile gametophores and can be used as a marker for confirmation of the female sex, by inducing archegonia of the sterile female plants or clones. This study aimed to contribute to the conservation of this threatened moss species, by massive propagation for reintroduction and population straitening in natural and semi-natural habitats, in scenarios of rapid climate change and water shortage. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the biological features of the species itself, as due to its rarity empirical data are lacking. This research contributed to the conservation and multiplication of D. lycopodioides and suggested an elegant method to prevent the extinction of this species from its natural habitats. This enables experimental investigation in this species and directs a plan of action for species survival both in captivity (ex-situ) and in nature (in situ).M221,330393054931

    The coffin-reliquary of the holy Serbian king Stefan of Dečani (fourteenth century): wood, pigments and metal surfaces

    The coffin-reliquary for the relics of the holy Serbian king Stefan Uroš III of Dečani has been made around 1343 as a rectangular chest with a gable cover. The present study aimed to identify the wood this coffin-reliquary was made, as well as the pigments and metals found on its surface. The combination of anatomical traits (diffuse-porosity, distinct helical thickenings in vessels, simple perforation plates, 3- to 4-seriate noded rays and diffuse-in-aggregates axial parenchyma) showed that the wood belongs to linden, i.e., to the botanical genus Tilia L. (Malvaceae). The linden is one of the sacred trees in Serbian culture, and its wood could also be used due to its ease for joinery. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF analyzer) was used for in situ determination of the material chemistry of the pigments, as well as the metals on the wooden surfaces of the coffin. Their elemental composition showed that wooden coffin-reliquary was painted with vermilion, malachite or copper resinate, orpiment, and lead white, while metal surfaces were shown to be gold and silver. Unlike a commonly used palette of earthy pigments, these coloring matters belong to precious noble pigments.M212.970
