New Charipinae (Hymenoptera, Figitidae) records for the Balkan Peninsula
Charipinae material collected from different countries within Balkan peninsula (Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia) have been studied. Material was collected as a part of ecological studies related with aphid biological control programmes. In total 960 specimens have been identified, grouped in 19 species: 15 belong to Alloxysta (Förster, 1869) and four to Phaenoglyphis (Förster, 1869). Eighteen new distributional records are here provided along with 33 new trophic records of 12 species. Seven species for Balkan are reported here for the first time.M231.553
The Developmental and Physiological Traits of Rare and Threatened Moss <i>Physcomitrium eurystomum</i> Sendtn. (Funariaceae) Valuable for Its Conservation
Physcomitrium eurystomum Sendtn. is a very rare European ephemeral fungoid moss. The entire European population of this species is considered threatened and it is red-listed in many regions and countries. In addition to being recognized as threatened and included in nature conservation legislation, it also requires active protection measures. This study aims to contribute to effective conservation practices for P. eurystomum. Different conservation physiology tests were carried out to propagate this species to achieve a reliable procedure for biomass production and the potential reintroduction of germplasm. Ex situ tests, both in vitro and ex vitro, were carried out to determine the optimal method for spore production under laboratory conditions, considering that the spores are the best propagules for the reintroduction of the species. An important outcome of this research is a deeper understanding of the role of the spore bank of this species for its survival in a variable environment. Some additional characterizations of the biology of this ephemeral moss species are also discussed, such as the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus of the vegetative vs. sexual phases to clarify the transition to the reproductive phase. It is proposed that both types of sporophytes be used in conservation practices due to viable spore bank self-sustainability in rapidly changing environmental conditions.M221100

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Essential Oil and Its Constituents Prevent Rat Kidney Tissue Injury and Inflammation Induced by a High Dose of L-Arginine
This study aimed to evaluate the protective action of oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil and its monoterpene constituents (thymol and carvacrol) in L-arginine-induced kidney damage by studying inflammatory and tissue damage parameters. The determination of biochemical markers that reflect kidney function, i.e., serum levels of urea and creatinine, tissue levels of neutrophil-gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), as well as a panel of oxidative-stress-related and inflammatory biomarkers, was performed. Furthermore, histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of kidneys obtained from different experimental groups were conducted. Pre-treatment with the investigated compounds prevented an L-arginine-induced increase in serum and tissue kidney damage markers and, additionally, decreased the levels of inflammation-related parameters (TNF-α and nitric oxide concentrations and myeloperoxidase activity). Micromorphological kidney tissue changes correlate with the alterations observed in the biochemical parameters, as well as the expression of CD95 in tubule cells and CD68 in inflammatory infiltrate cells. The present results revealed that oregano essential oil, thymol, and carvacrol exert nephroprotective activity, which could be, to a great extent, associated with their anti-inflammatory, antiradical scavenging, and antiapoptotic action and, above all, due to their ability to lessen the disturbances arising from acute pancreatic damage. This paper presents new records and noteworthy data on the following taxa in SE Europe and adjacent regions: diatoms Discostella asterocostata and Stephanodiscus hantzschii f. tenuis, red alga Bangia atropurpúrea, green alga Ulvapilifera, saprotro-phic fungi Didymella vitalbina and Phragmotrichum rivoclarinum, mosses Buxbau-mia aphylla, Sphagnum divinum, and Tortella fasciculata, monocots Anacamptis x nicodemi, Epipactis palustris, Epipogium aphyllum, and Gymnadenia frivaldii and dicots Androsace lactea, Drosera rotundifolia, Potentilla montenegrina, and Tozzia alpina subsp. carpathica are given within SE Europe and adjacent regions.M230.89310448
