Examining attendance, performance and interest in a CS course in relation to students’ achievement goal orientation and self-evaluation
There has been a lot of research related to the
prediction of students’ interest in a course and course
performance. The findings are especially important for
those fields (and courses) with high failure and dropout
rates, such as computer science. Although many research in
computer science education involve various motivational
and learning strategy frameworks (like achievement goal
orientation and Motivated Strategies for Learning
Questionnaire – MSLQ), very few involve interest,
attendance and self-evaluation. In this study, the aim was to
see whether students’ achievement goal orientation and self-
evaluation of their pre-faculty programming knowledge are
related to course performance, attendance and interest in an
introductory computer science course. Additionally, we
wanted to see if attendance and interest relate to course
performance. The findings suggest that only task-approach
has a positive correlation with final test scores (but not with
mid-term test scores), and that all AGO constructs except
other-avoidance correlate positively with interest. Also,
attendance has a positive correlation with mid-term test
scores (but not with final test scores) while interest has a
positive correlation with both mid-term and final test scores.
Finally, we suspect that attendance and mid-term test
findings may be somewhat influenced by course and faculty
policies
Heterogeneity of Serbian consumers' preferences for local wines: Discrete choice analysis
The unique and at the same time very complex nature of the wine requires a more thorough selection process compared to other consumer products. Wine consumers are faced with a number of brands, grape varieties, and regions of origin, diverse tastes and prices. Using discrete choice experiment this study explores the importance that consumers in Serbia attach to five attributes of the local wine brands. Respondents were asked to evaluate 10 choice tasks, each with three different wines, and to choose the one that they would like to have with friends or family. The sample results indicate the high importance of the wine brand, while the price proved to be the least important. However, preference-based segmentation identified three clusters that differ primarily in the type of wine they favor, but also whether they like or not sweet and sparkling wines. It turns out that the price is a moderately important attribute in all clusters
Using Data Envelopment Analysis and Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methods to Evaluate Teacher Performance in Higher Education
This paper proposes an approach that combines data envelopment analysis (DEA) with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and conjoint analysis, as multi-criteria decision-making methods to evaluate teachers' performance in higher education. This process of evaluation is complex as it involves consideration of both objective and subjective efficiency assessments. The efficiency evaluation in the presence of multiple different criteria is done by DEA and results heavily depend on their selection, values, and the weights assigned to them. Objective efficiency evaluation is data-driven, while the subjective efficiency relies on values of subjective criteria usually captured throughout the survey. The conjoint analysis helps with the selection and determining the relative importance of such criteria, based on stakeholder preferences, obtained as an evaluation of experimentally designed hypothetical profiles. An efficient experimental design can be either symmetric or asymmetric depending on the structure of criteria covered by the study. Obtained importance might be a guideline for selecting adequate input and output criteria in the DEA model when assessing teachers' subjective efficiency. Another reason to use conjoint preferences is to set a basis for weight restrictions in DEA and consequently to increase its discrimination power. Finally, the overall teacher's efficiency is an AHP aggregation of subjective and objective teaching and research efficiency scores. Given the growing competition in the field of education, a higher level of responsibility and commitment is expected, and it is therefore helpful to identify weaknesses so that they can be addressed. Therefore, the evaluation of teachers' efficiency at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Organizational Sciences illustrates the usage of the proposed approach. As results, relatively efficient and inefficient teachers were identified, the reasons and aspects of their inefficiency were discovered, and rankings were made
Assessing consumer readiness for participation in IoT-based demand response business models
The paper studies the consumer readiness for participation in new business models for demand response in electricity markets. The main premise is that consumers' attitudes, if considered during the development, ensure that the business model meets the interests of the consumers, while still maintaining a focus on its original purpose. The goal of the paper is twofold: to develop a new business model suitable for a developing electricity market, that enables customer participation in the demand response services, and to analyze customer readiness to participate in the developed model. The proposed business model relies on internet of things, as a technology that provides customers with an easy way to participate in demand response services. The customers' attitudes towards various incentives, such as green energy, environmental protection, profit and interest in new technologies, as well as trust in the market operator were taken into consideration. The results indicate that different service packages can be created for different types of customers depending on individual characteristics. Additionally, results show that consumers show interest in environmental conservation, while they prefer state institutions as service operators. Using the gathered results, new insights can be gained into demand response user acceptance, and further business strategies formulated
Comprehensive Analysis of Discussion Forum Participation: From Speech Acts to Discussion Dynamics and Course Outcomes
Learning in computer-mediated setting represents a complex, multidimensional process. This complexity calls for a comprehensive analytical approach that would allow for understanding of various dimensions of learner generated discourse and the structure of the underlying social interactions. Current research, however, primarily focuses on manual or, more recently, supervised methods for discourse analysis. Moreover, discourse and social structures are typically analyzed separately without the use of computational methods that can offer a holistic perspective. This paper proposes an approach that addresses these two challenges, first, by using an unsupervised machine learning approach to extract speech acts as representations of knowledge construction processes and finds transition probabilities between speech acts across different messages, and second, by integrating the use of discovered speech acts to explain the formation of social ties and predicting course outcomes. We extracted six categories of speech acts from messages exchanged in discussion forums of two MOOCs and each category corresponded to knowledge construction processes from well-established theoretical models. We further showed how measures derived from discourse analysis explained the ways how social ties were created that framed emerging social networks. Multiple regression models showed that the combined use of measures derived from discourse analysis and social ties predicted learning outcomes
The Relationship between Recruiter Burnout, Work Engagement and Turnover Intention: Evidence from Serbia
Contemporary research on disorders in modern-day work environment marks burnout among employees in different professions as an important disorder with serious consequences. Practice has shown that recruiters are one of the professions frequently facing burnout. The relationship between burnout, work engagement and turnover intention has often been investigated in the literature. However, even though scholars are increasingly interested in these relationships in other professions, there is a growing need for studies evaluating the relationship between the three concepts among human resource (HR) professionals, particularly recruiters. Having this in mind, the aim of this study is to identify, understand and examine the relationship between burnout, engagement and turnover intention of recruiters in Serbia. The data was collected using an online questionnaire within a sample of 100 recruiters in Serbia. Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was used for measuring burnout, UWES-9 for measuring work engagement and TIS-6 for measuring turnover intention. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used for evaluating the relationships between burnout, turnover intention and work engagement. The results of the research showed that work engagement has a negative impact on burnout and that burnout has a positive impact on turnover intention, while the relationship between work engagement and turnover intention was not confirmed. The correlation analysis confirmed all three examined relationships. The results largely support the findings from the literature for other professions confirming that employees who suffer from a high degree of burnout are more likely to have a turnover intention. Finally, the implications of these results and recommendations for organizations and recruiters themselves to prevent and decrease burnout are discussed. The findings of this study can make a contribution to the specific academic literature on burnout among recruiters and initiate further research on this topic of high interest
Neural embedding-based specificity metrics for pre-retrieval query performance prediction
In information retrieval, the task of query performance prediction (QPP) is concerned with determining in advance the performance of a given query within the context of a retrieval model. QPP has an important role in ensuring proper handling of queries with varying levels of difficulty. Based on the extant literature, query specificity is an important indicator of query performance and is typically estimated using corpus-specific frequency-based specificity metrics However, such metrics do not consider term semantics and inter-term associations. Our work presented in this paper distinguishes itself by proposing a host of corpus-independent specificity metrics that are based on pre-trained neural embeddings and leverage geometric relations between terms in the embedding space in order to capture the semantics of terms and their interdependencies. Specifically, we propose three classes of specificity metrics based on pre-trained neural embeddings: neighborhood-based, graph-based, and cluster-based metrics. Through two extensive and complementary sets of experiments, we show that the proposed specificity metrics (1) are suitable specificity indicators, based on the gold standards derived from knowledge hierarchies (Wikipedia category hierarchy and DMOZ taxonomy), and (2) have better or competitive performance compared to the state of the art QPP metrics, based on both TREC ad hoc collections namely Robust'04, Gov2 and ClueWeb'09 and ANTIQUE question answering collection. The proposed graph-based specificity metrics, especially those that capture a larger number of inter-term associations, proved to be the most effective in both query specificity estimation and QPP. We have also publicly released two test collections (i.e. specificity gold standards) that we built from the Wikipedia and DMOZ knowledge hierarchies

They can be recognized in documents at the national level. They just have to be improved in terms of uniformity and universality
Integral approach to risk analysis and value engineering
Value analysis and engineering, on one hand, and risk analysis, on the other, are two very significant approaches whose application is widely accepted in various scientific fields. This paper will highlight the possibilities of combining the two methodologies for a more comprehensive approach to solving business problems. Considering the concepts and principles on which these approaches are based, it is possible to integrate them during project implementation. The broad possibilities of combining the methods of these two fields will be illustrated by the combination of the FAST and FMEA methods, where it is shown how, with a slight increase in time, the benefits of both of these methods can be achieved, with an example from an automotive industry, in particular, the example of a car door handle
Tenth order boundary value problem solution existence by fixed point theorem
In this paper we consider the Green function for a boundary value problem of generic order. For a specific case, the Leray-Schauder form of the fixed point theorem has been used to prove the existence of a solution for this particular equation. Our theoretical approach generalizes, extends, complements, and enriches several results in the existing literature
