Teaching Standardization to Generation Z-Learning Outcomes Define Teaching Methods
This chapter aims to provide more insight in specific aspects of teaching about standardization and addressed teaching methods to better teach in order to facilitate a new generation of students—generation Z—to learn about standardization. Adequate teaching methods for teaching about standardization are based on the desired learning outcomes. In standardization community, it seems that prevailing opinion is that education about standardization should result in general awareness about standards and standardization. However, the learning outcome of higher education about standardization should be significantly more ambitious than ‘raising awareness’. Based on Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956), teaching methods that can be used to enhance Generation Z students learning about standardization are systematized at four levels of learning outcomes. Taking into account unique features of Generation Z students, content related to standardization and standards should be engaging as possible, based on real-world and global. Cooperation among universities, nontraditional providers of higher education, governments, industry and SDOs related education about standardization can be more closed to increasing efforts of many universities related to internationalization and third mission development
Enhancing Large Dam Safety Using IoT Technologies: A Case of a Smart Dam
This paper investigates how to transform a manual monitoring system into a smart environment using IoT technologies. Large dams are of huge importance as water reservoirs and potential energy sources primarily because of their use for electric energy generation. Monitoring and predicting dams' behavior are quite challenging. Due to a variety of limitations, environmental obstacles and dam system complexity, the application of RFID, Bluetooth, and IoT technologies has proven to be an adequate, affordable and reliable dam safety solution. This paper introduces a comprehensive model of dam safety management and monitoring based on pervasive technologies. The model described in this work has been applied within the large dam "Iron Gate 1", on the river Danube in the Republic of Serbia. The results show that the use of new technologies in the dam monitoring process can reduce human error and improve overall process
Typology of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe including the CIS: Features of the use of alternative energy
The article describes the features of the current state and future development of renewable energy without taking into account the use of water resources in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and European Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries (except Russia). The energy economy of the observed countries varies significantly in structure and total energy consumption, as well as in the degree and structure of alternative energy sources. The study was based on energy statistics (IRENA, UN Statistics Division. REN21, BP, IEA), etc. The purpose of the paper is to propose a typology of countries according to the level of alternative energy development based on an analysis of the existing conditions for pursue of such innovative energy policy. It is shown that the two different types of countries are distinguished. The first type is the more industrially developed countries, but alternative energy is relatively poorly developed in them. The second type is the agro-industrial countries. But they have higher rates of energy production using alternative energy sources per unit of GDP
An Application of a DSML in Industry 4.0 Production Processes
One of the goals of Industry 4.0 is to enable mass customization of products and to satisfy specific needs of customers. This goal is often hard to achieve in traditional manufacturing systems. To enable fast production changes, an automatic and flexible production is needed. In this context we propose a Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) approach and a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) to model production processes. The language supports two levels of abstraction. A Master-Level (ML) model is used by a process designer to model process steps. A Detail-Level (DL) model is used by Orchestrator, a cluster of industrial computers that manages production, to fill existing ML models with a specification of production logistic and smart resources. A code generator is used to generate machine-readable or human-readable instructions from DL models. Generated code is used for automatic execution of production processes within a simulation or a shop floor. In this paper we provide an application of a DSML, which is capable of modeling production processes that are ready for automatic code generation
A literature survey on relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth
The purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive empirical literature review on the relation between renewable energy consumption and economic growth. The survey included 50 papers, most of which are published in major energy journals, to ensure the high-quality review. This literature review includes period, countries, methodology and research results. Also, the survey included policy recommendation for renewable energy policymakers depending on results obtained by authors. The general observation from reviewed literature is the absence of any clear consensus regarding the relationship between renewable energy and economic growth, which can be contributed to various factors
Exponential quality function for community detection in complex networks
One of the most popular topics in analyzing complex networks is the detection of its community structure. In this paper, we introduce a new criterion for community detection, called the E-quality function. The quality of an individual community is defined as a difference between its benefit and its cost, where both are exponential functions of the number of internal edges and the number of external edges, respectively. The obtained optimization problem, maximization of the E-quality function over all possible partitions of a network, is solved by the variable neighborhood search (VNS)-based heuristic. Comparison of the new criterion and modularity is performed on the usual test instances from the literature. Experimental results obtained both on artificial and real networks show that the proposed E-quality function allows detection of the communities existing in the network
Preference Based Portfolio for Private Investors: Discrete Choice Analysis Approach
Behavioral finance literature shows that in addition to Markowitz's rate of return and risk, private investors consider various other stock features. This paper discusses the problem of determining investors' preferences for portfolio selection criteria, as well as the problem of optimal portfolio determination from the investors' point of view. The study primarily focuses on private investors who are interested in one-time investments rather than stock trading. We use a discrete choice analysis and hierarchical Bayes method to measure individual investors' preferences, and a logit model to determine individual shares of preferences. We treat the share of preferences as the share of certain stocks in an optimal portfolio. The proposed methodology is illustrated by the example of companies whose stocks are traded on the Belgrade Stock Exchange. We measure respondents' preferences for companies, preferences for return rates, riskiness of stocks, and dividend rates. The results of comparing the performance of the resulting portfolio with the efficient frontier obtained using Markowitz's portfolio theory indicate its high efficiency, thus validating the proposed approach
Bringing Biometric Sensors to the Classroom: A Fingerprint Acquisition Laboratory for Improving Student Motivation and Commitment
This paper presents a research study conducted in a specially developed laboratory for biometric engineering education. The laboratory gives students an opportunity to learn more about fingerprint acquisition and analyze the impact of acquisition on other parts of the biometric authentication process. An IoT approach was used, as different types of sensors (biometric sensors, thermometer, and humidity sensor) and components (heaters and workstations) were included in setting up a working surface for biometric data acquisition. Working surfaces create a network where data collected from each working station is recorded in a database. In parallel with biometric data acquisition, environmental condition parameters are recorded. Collected data is available to students for later analysis through the use of a specially developed visualization tool. In order to fully utilize the possibilities the laboratory provides, a flipped classroom approach was used. An evaluation study was done as a part of the course of Biometric technology held at the University of Belgrade. Research results show improvements in student learning outcomes and motivation
Study on performance evaluation of the production process - fuzzy MCDM approach
Improvement of the production process presents a very important management task for both researchers and practitioners and enables a better market position of the enterprise. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of the production process can provide useful information on the current state of the ongoing process. In this paper, the relative importance of KPIs and their values at the enterprise level were assessed by the experts and decision-makers. Their estimates are described by the linguistic variables which were modeled by intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. The weights vector of KPIs at the level of the considered enterprise is given by the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchical Process (FAHP) with Triangular Intuitionistic Fuzzy Numbers (TIFNs). The rank of enterprises with respect to KPIs' values and their weights was calculated using the modified TOPSIS with TIFNs. The developed model was tested on 30 enterprises from Serbia, belonging to the sector of small and medium-sized (SME) production enterprises. The improvement strategies of KPIs should be proposed at the level of each enterprise, separately, respecting the KPIs' values of the first-ranked enterprise
Towards the creation of smart policy mix for developing technology entrepreneurship ecosystem
Purpose: The purpose of the research is to test the feasibility of the Integrated Technology Forecasting Model (ITFM) as an approach to governments' smart policy mix decision making support. The research follows on the results of a three-year research project at the University of Belgrade, initiated by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology Development of Serbia, with the framework pilot test being identified as a research framework step. The pilot test was conducted for the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem of Serbia, while the proposed framework is designed to have broader applicability for different ecosystems as well. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is built upon an original research framework - the ITFM, integrating Delphi method, Objectives Matrix and Analytical Hierarchy Process. The feasibility of the framework is tested on a panel of experts from government, academia, and industry of Serbia that evaluated policy goals and measures through the developed questionnaire. The results were aggregated to calculate priorities of policy measures. Findings: The pilot test conducted on a small sample, but encompassing relevant experts, provided valuable feedback on the feasibility of the proposed framework. The results fulfilled the main objectives of the pilot test: a consensus was reached among the panel experts and the prioritization of policy measures is presented. Suggestions by the panel pointed to the need for engaging panel experts in designing the questionnaire. Originality/value: The presented research shows the potential for wider applicability of the novel methodological approach as a support to governments in prioritising policy goals and measures. The presented research framework, methodology and pilot test results are an original contribution of the authors. The paper's main value is in showing the results of a significant phase of the overall research project aimed at proposing a novel, creative approach to more responsible and effective development of policy decision-making
