An IoT Approach to Consumer Involvement in Smart Grid Services: A Green Perspective
The paper presents an innovative model for consumer participation in electricity market based on IoT. The goal is to develop a new business model and the underlying IoT infrastructure to enable the participation of individual household devices in smart grid services. The purpose of the proposed model is to allow for higher inclusion of renewable energy sources by providing cheap and flexible balancing services. The approach is based on the premise that consumers’ attitudes towards green energy and environmental protection are important incentives for acceptance of the proposed model, and as such should be closely monitored during its development. The proposed model has been evaluated through the study of consumer’ attitudes in the context of a smart grid in Serbia. The results show that consumers are interested in environmental conservation and are willing to participate in these new smart grid services
Improving Decision-Making in Ski Resorts by Analysing Ski Lift Transportation—A Review
This paper provides an overview of research on ski lift transportation data, a still heavily underused resource in ski resorts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that provides an overview of the efforts done in analyzing ski lift transportation data with the goal to advance the decision-making process in ski resorts. The paper is separated into three major research directions, the first being the clustering of ski lift transportation data. The second research direction is concerned with the exploitation of ski lift transportation data for ski injury research and prevention. The third research direction is concerned with congestion analysis in ski resorts. We provide directions for future research in the conclusion
How to measure triple helix performance? a fresh approach
Global and local success of a country is largely dependent on the level of collaboration between the three main pillars: Government, Industry, and Academia. Successful management of this collaboration requires development and observation of performance measures. In the past few years, a steep rise of interest in composite indices is detected. They measure different aspects of national performance: innovativeness, entrepreneurial activities, sustainability, etc. Approaches to measuring the Triple Helix synergy have been introduced before. In particular, applications of Shannon’s equation grasped the attention of various researches. Still, a single measure for comparing countries has yet to be introduced. This paper aims at establishing the performance measure of industry-university-government relations. As a case study, OECD countries are compared based on the indicators from the official OECD Main Science and Technology Indicators, classified according to the Triple Helix actors. The authors apply the two-step Composite I-distance method for creating composite measures of multivariate problems. The results imply that it is possible to measure the Triple Helix performance at the national level. These measures provide valuable data for more effective management within and among main Triple Helix actors. The policy-makers may use the results to determine further development directions and corrective measures
A proposal of architecture for integration and uniform use of hybrid SQL/NoSQL database components
The popularity of social networks and the expansion of various second-generation Internet services have contributed to the increase of data, of different structuredness levels, in use. Relational databases (frequently called SQL databases) pose themselves as a logical choice for the management of data containing fixed or rarely changeable structure. The need for fast processing of vast quantities of unstructured data has opened the door for the rise of NoSQL databases popularity. The business of modern organizations often faces the challenge of parallel use of different database types. In recent years, hybrid SQL/NoSQL databases, which contain SQL and NoSQL databases as its components, become a popular solution for the issue above. This paper identifies and describes a possible way of integration and uniform use (as two significant non-functional requirements) of hybrid database components, as well as introduce the architecture for this purpose. The presented architecture, with its specially developed components, provides as simple usage as a single database does, with advantages of parallel use of databases of different types. The functioning principle of the new architecture is elaborated on a series of practical use cases of various complexities, which were tested against a hybrid database, and Oracle and MongoDB as well
How do Public Policy-makers Perceive National Quality Infrastructure? The Case of Serbia as an EU Pre-accession Country
In this article, we develop a framework for a comparative analysis of policy-making in the EU pre- and post-accession CEE countries (CEECs) in order to create generalized knowledge in some particular areas, such as quality infrastructure (QI). In order to find how public policy-makers perceive QI, we employ a triangulation methodology. The results show that policy-makers are not fully familiar with national QI concepts and seldom rely on experts' opinion. Moreover, QI legislation is uncritically transferred from the EU
Digital marketing strategy of accor hotels: shaping the future of hospitality
Purpose - The main aim of this case study is to explain the digital marketing strategy for different target segments of Accor Hotels, the most diversified hotel player. Design - We present a business case study about Accor Hotels, together with teaching notes that teachers will be able to use in the classroom. Methodology - The business case study methodological approach, using secondary data from a variety of valuable sources, was applied to present the success story of the digital marketing strategy of Accor Hotels. The case study consists of the Opening paragraph, Introduction, Hospitality industry players, About Accor Hotels, Customer journey in the hospitality industry, Digital marketing strategy for Accor Hotels, Conclusion and Teaching notes. Approach - Authors are focusing on a case study example to present best practices from the hospitality indstry in the era of digitalization. Findings - The major input for developing the right digital marketing strategy is understanding the stages of the digital customer journey. The case study present the hotels' current (loyal) and potential clients as well as hotel marketing strategies. Marketing strategies include changes in the hotel portfolio offering, different pricing levels, communication and content marketing strategy, and partnership deals with all players in the hospitality industry. This case study is interesting for both the academia and industry experts. Originality of the research - We explain how hotel managers define client value proposition for Accor Hotels, with a better understanding of modern trends in the hospitality industry: digitalization, personalization, innovative business models and faster response to client needs. This case study is intended for teaching in Digital Marketing or Hospitality Management courses for masters or undergraduate students
Systems Thinking in Software Projects-an Artificial Neural Network Approach
The authors discuss why the current conceptual base of project management research and practice continues to attract criticism since it does not adequately address the complexity that leads to software-project failure. To do so, the study explores systems thinking and artificial neural networks to shed light on complexity in software-project behavior using nonlinear functional relationships between critical success factors and project success to utilize their connectedness as an approach in order to create project-outcome prediction models. The artificial neural networks were used to create two project-outcome prediction models: one for a binary classification task to discriminate failed from successful projects using a multi-input-single-output configuration and one for a multi-task binary classification to discriminate success from failure in multiple project-success dimensions using a multi-input multi-output configuration. The results yielded high-performance values for a binary classification task, performed to predict overall project success, and slightly lower performance values for the multi-task binary classification, which was also performed to predict success in project-success dimensions. It was found that the nonlinear behavior of critical success factors may be used to create prediction models, by embedding equifinality and connectedness constructs that prove to be useful to understand projects as complex, multi-loop, and nonlinear systems. Further research is needed to investigate the causality between critical success factors in order to explore the possible propagation of critical success factors within a project system network and its implications on project success
Chatbot development using Java tools and libraries
The aim of this paper is the development of an intelligent programming robot for help with coding, using Java tools and libraries. This paper will examine the development process of Java software bots and their general objective. For the purpose of the successful development of an intelligent programming robot, the paper will provide theoretical guidance in selecting frameworks and development tools and assist in the development process, training and testing. It will compare existing software development tools for creating the bot that will quickly and reliably answer programming questions to users in the form of a conversation. As a result, it will provide a thorough foundation for the complete development of a chatbot
Two Sides of Collective Decision Making - Votes from Crowd and Knowledge from Experts
This paper deals with the role of experts and crowds in solving important societal issues. The authors argue that both experts and crowds are important stakeholders in collective decision making which should jointly participate in the decision-making process to improve it. Usually studied in different research areas, there have been a few models that integrate crowds and experts in a joint model. The authors give an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of crowd and expert decision making and highlight possibilities to connect these two worlds. They position the research in the area of Computational Social Choice (COMSOC) and crowd voting, emerging fields that bring great potential for collective decision making. COMSOC focuses on improving social welfare and the quality of products and services through the inclusion of community or clients into the decision-making process. Despite these altruistic goals, there are several shortcomings that call for the engagement of experts in voting procedures. The authors propose a simple participatory model for weighting and selection of voters and votes through the integration of expert rankings into crowd voting systems
Residential Attractiveness of Cities from the Perspective of the Efficiency, Residents’ Perception and Preferences: The Case of Serbia
The purpose of the paper is to determine the most influential factors related to cities/towns attractiveness and to compare respondents’ perception and real efficiency of certain cities. Empirical study is designed to evaluate residential attractiveness of the cities in Republic of Serbia as cities’ relative efficiency from one hand and citizens’ perception and preferences regarding living conditions from the other hand. For the purpose of attractiveness assessment, two input–output scenarios are created: financial and mixed financial health efficiency scenario. Both scenarios are evaluated using suitable Data Envelopment Analysis models which resulted in comparison of cities/towns attractiveness and determination of the most influential factors. This analysis was extended by a survey of the residents’ perceptions as well as their preference through conjoint analysis. The hypothesis was if the city was assessed as efficient, it does not automatically mean that it is perceived as attractive. Namely, sometimes ‘image’ of the particular city is more important than its quantified efficiency. Comparative analysis of results of both methods proves the aforementioned hypothesis in the case of the 15 regional centres in Serbia.
