English for More Specialized Purposes: Suggestions and Challenges
This paper presents the changes in the
representation and type of ESP courses at the Faculty
of Organizational Sciences, University of Belgrade
that are to be introduced with the new accreditation
period commencing in the academic year 2022/2023,
and potential challenges that these changes bring
to ESP instructors. Even though there is a general
trend of gradual reduction in the presence and
status of ESP courses in Serbian tertiary education,
our experience proves that discipline specialists
and faculty management are eager to embrace ESP
courses in which “specific purposes” have become
“more specific” or “more specialized”. Accordingly,
new ESP courses at our multidisciplinary faculty
are to become discipline-specific (i.e. tailor-made to
particular study modules, e.g. English for IT, English
for Management, English for Finance, English for
Human Resources) rather than faculty-specific (i.e.
one-course-fits-all-modules). The authors therefore
suggest that narrowing down the disciplinary focus
of ESP courses and presenting “more specialized”
purposes to decision makers at particular faculties
may improve the status of ESP courses and potentially
reverse the process of their elimination from Serbian
universities
Development of a national level environmental management model by integrating methods of risk assessment : doctoral dissertation
Predmet doktorske disertacije je razvoj modela ekološkog upravljanja na nacionalnom nivou, integrisanjem metoda za procenu rizika, čime bi se stvorila podrška u odlučivanju na nacionalnom nivou u kreiranju zakona, politika regulativa i nacionalnih strategija, ali i omogućilo unapređenje upravljanja ekološkim rizicima na nacionalnom nivou. Takođe model treba da omogući holistički pristup pri proceni ekoloških rizika, uzimajući u obzir, nekada zanemarivane faktore rizika kao što su percepcija ekoloških rizika od strane šire javnosti, kao i sklonost ka ekološkom riziku različitih činilaca društva, od pojedinaca, organizacija i drugih društvenih grupacija. Model ekološkog upravljanja na nacionalnom nivou koji integriše metode procene rizika (Model EUnNN-IMPR) predstavljen u ovoj disertaciji se zasniva na hibridnom pristupu odnosno na korišćenju kvalitativnih i kvantitativnih metoda procene rizika u rangiranju promenljivih ekoloških rizika i rizika po životnu sredinu, čime se daje podrška odlučivanju pri određivanju prioriteta ciljeva ekološkog upravljanja. Cilj primene ovog modela je ukazivanje na kritične oblasti ekološkog upravljanja na nacionalnom nivou te davanje pravaca za definisanje strateških prioriteta za rešavanje ekoloških problema i zaštitu životne sredine. Jedna od koristi korišćenja takvog modela se ogleda u rezultatima primene modela ekološkog upravljanja na nacionalnom nivou koji se odnose na poboljšanje kvaliteta stanja životne sredine i zdravlja ljudi jedne zemlje, usled određivanja prioriteta pri ostvarivanju ciljeva ekološkog upravljanja zasnovanih na rangiranim ekološkim rizicima i rizicima po životnu sredinu uz uključivanje javnosti ne samo u proces percepcije i ocene rizika, već i u proces donošenja ekoloških odluka, čime se unapređuje podrška za 6 uspostavljanje transparentne i efektivne nacionalne politike i strategija zaštite životne sredine zemlje.The subject of the doctoral dissertation is the development of a model of environmental management at the national level by integrating risk assessment methods, which would support decision-making at the national level in the creation of laws, policies and national strategies, as well as improve the management of environmental risks at the national level. The model should also enable a holistic approach to the environmental risk assessment, taking into account sometimes previously neglected risk factors such as the perception of environmental risks by the general public, as well as the propensity for environmental risk of different participants of society, from individuals, organizations to other social groups. The environmental management model at the national level that integrates risk assessment methods presented in this dissertation is based on a hybrid approach, that is, using qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods in ranking variable environmental and ecological risks, thereby supporting decision-making in prioritizing environmental management objectives. The purpose of the implementation of this model is to identify critical areas of environmental management at the national level and to provide directions for defining strategic priorities for solving environmental problems and environmental protection. One of the benefits of using such a model is reflected in the results of the implementation of environmental management model at a national level that relate to improving the quality of the environment and human health of a country, by setting priorities in achieving environmental management objectives based on ranked 8 environmental and ecological risks and by involving the public, not only in the process of risk perception and assessment, but also in the environmental decision-making process, thereby enhancing support for the establishment of a transparent and effective national policy and strategies for environmental protection of a country
A Novel Integrated Subjective-Objective MCDM Model for Alternative Ranking in Order to Achieve Business Excellence and Sustainability
Achieving sustainability in constant development in every area in today's modern business has become a challenge on the one hand, and an imperative on the other. If the aspect of business excellence achievement is also added to it, the complexity of the system increases significantly, and it is necessary to model a system considering several parameters and satisfying the multi-criteria function. This paper develops a novel integrated model that involves the application of a subjective-objective model in order to achieve business sustainability and excellence. The model consists of fuzzy PIPRECIA (fuzzy pivot pairwise relative criteria importance Assessment) as a subjective method, CRITIC (criteria importance through intercriteria correlation) and I-distance method as objective methods. The goal is to take the advantages of these approaches and allow for more accurate and balanced (symmetric) decision-making through their integration. The integrated subjective-objective model has been applied in a narrow geographical area to consider and evaluate banks as a significant factor in improving the social aspect of sustainability. An additional contribution of the paper is a critical overview of multi-criteria problems in which the levels of the hierarchical structure contain a different (asymmetric) number of elements. A specific example has also been used to prove that only a hierarchical structure with an equal number of lower-level elements provides precise weights of criteria in accordance with the preferences of decision-makers referring to subjective models. The results obtained are verified throughout the calculation of Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients, and throughout a sensitivity analysis involving a dynamic reverse rank matrix
Supporting actionable intelligence: Reframing the analysis of observed study strategies
Models and processes developed in learning analytics research are increasing in sophistication and predictive power. However, the ability to translate analytic findings to practice remains problematic. This study aims to address this issue by establishing a model of learner behaviour that is both predictive of student course performance, and easily interpreted by instructors. To achieve this aim, we analysed fine grained trace data (from 3 offerings of an undergraduate online course, N=1068) to establish a comprehensive set of behaviour indicators aligned with the course design. The identified behaviour patterns, which we refer to as observed study strategies, proved to be associated with the student course performance. By examining the observed strategies of high and low performers throughout the course, we identified prototypical pathways associated with course success and failure. The proposed model and approach offers valuable insights for the provision of process-oriented feedback early in the course, and thus can aid learners in developing their capacity to succeed online
Quality Losses as the Key Argument in the Public Procurement in Healthcare
The amount of public procurement spending is growing globally and about one-third of public-sector spending is related to hospitals and healthcare institutions. Knowing that facts, it is a wise decision to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of purchasing public organizations to manage public procurements. Translating needs of public authorities, as well as final users of goods and services, into tender documentation is a complex task which needs multidisciplinary teams. One of the key problems in a public procurement is related to defining specific requirements for companies (bidders), award criteria and technical specification of quality of goods and services. Many purchasing public organizations consider public procurement processes as finished immediately after purchasing and forgot processes of quality surveillance. Dominant practice-public procurement with only one or dominant award criterion based on the lowest price might have as a result purchasing of low-quality goods and services. To prevent that, the purchasing organizations need to apply criteria in addition to or other than price and to describe the functions of the product or the desired outcomes rather than technical specifications. This paper has the aim to present usage of Quadratic Quality Loss Function (QQLF) for the analysis of quality of medical devices for the purpose of public procurement. The application of the QQLF concept can help public purchasing organizations to develop their ability to adequately address problems of quality in use and achieve values for the price. The average or expected quality losses which can be calculated by QQLF are a valuable argument in preventing lower quality products to be repurchased and can be added to other award criteria
Enhancing IT Project Management Maturity Assessment
Maturity models define sets of levels or phases describing the development of observed object in a unique and hierarchically structured way. The existence of CMMI model leads to the development of other models and, consequently, to the development of maturity assessment systems. Maturity is attributed with a certain “maturity level” and relates to progressive improvement in performances. This paper discusses maturity assessment using the basic principles of PERT method, i.e., optimistic, pessimistic and most likely maturity assessment of an organization, directly implying that IT, project, and organizational maturity components, as well as demographic characteristics, significantly influence performance management in IT projects on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. IT, project, and organizational performances’ assessment enables implementation of the maturity measurement system in order to create an appropriate project management knowledge framework. Are audit opinions related to bankruptcy forecasting of companies listed on the sector a-agriculture, forestry and fisheries?
Audit reports and audit opinions are of great importance to transparency and investors in their decision making. In addition to investors, many users are interested in the operation of a company. Due to their numerosity and the numerousness of their claims, it is important to consider the possibility of overseeing the occurrence of bankruptcy. The paper applies Altman's Z-score model for companies operating in emerging markets, that is, the possibility of bankruptcy on a sample of companies listed on the Belgrade Stock Exchange within the A sector-agriculture, forestry and fishery in the period 2016-2018. At the same time, the auditors' opinions are analyzed and whether there is a correlation between the auditors' opinions and the areas in which the companies operate according to the results of Altman's Z-score model. With all the limitations it presents, this paper offers guidance when looking at the relationship between audit opinions and the types of zones in which companies operate, according to the results of the Z-score model. Through the research done in the paper, questions were raised for future insight and development through the opportunities and specific fields addressed in this paper
A distributed IoT system for modelling dynamics in smart environments
This paper studies the possibilities of fusing the concepts of smart environments and continuous and discrete systems simulation into a single system where identification of parameters, dynamics modelling and the choice of adequate control actions can be performed in real-time. The goal is to develop a model of a distributed IoT system capable of intelligent and dynamic adjusting of structure and system parameters with respect to the set goals. This goal is achieved in two phases. In the first phase, the modelling of the nodes in the smart environment is performed through defining interconnected IoT devices that can gather data via sensors, perform control actions via actuators, and perform basic computing operations. In the second phase, hierarchical modelling of smart environments is performed by developing complex mathematical models that use collected data to calculate performance indicators, perform simulations, initiate control actions and support decision making. Both phases are supported by specific software components, some running in the cloud and some distributed on the edge devices. The developed approach is applied for modelling the system for traffic noise monitoring in a smart city
Databases and Information Systems in the AI Era: Contributions from ADBIS, TPDL and EDA 2020 Workshops and Doctoral Consortium
Research on database and information technologies has been rapidly evolving over the last couple of years. This evolution was lead by three major forces: Big Data, AI and Connected World that open the door to innovative research directions and challenges, yet exploiting four main areas: (i) computational and storage resource modeling and organization; (ii) new programming models, (iii) processing power and (iv) new applications that emerge related to health, environment, education, Cultural Heritage, Banking, etc. The 24th East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2020), the 24th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2020) and the 16th Workshop on Business Intelligence and Big Data (EDA 2020), held during August 25–27, 2020, at Lyon, France, and associated satellite events aimed at covering some emerging issues related to database and information system research in these areas. The aim of this paper is to present such events, their motivations, and topics of interest, as well as briefly outline the papers selected for presentations. The selected papers will then be included in the remainder of this volume
