A Blockchain-Based Loyalty Program for a Smart City

    No full text
The subject of this paper is the development of a loyalty program based on blockchain, tailored for the application in smart cities. The goal is to propose a collaborative loyalty scheme that would enable consumers to collect loyalty points across a smart city, through traditional buying of products and services from partners, but also through participating in different collaborative activities, such as crowdsourcing, crowdsensing or crowdvoting. Additionally, the points can be spent across the smart city with any of the partners. In the paper, we give details on the business model for the proposed loyalty scheme and present a prototype of the implementation on the Hyperledger Fabric platform. We discuss the advantages of the proposed loyalty program and give implications for different stakeholders

Approximate Membership Function Shapes of Solutions to Intuitionistic Fuzzy Transportation Problems

    No full text
In this paper, proposing a mathematical model with disjunctive constraint system, and providing approximate membership function shapes to the optimal values of the decision variables, we improve the solution approach to transportation problems with trapezoidal fuzzy parameters. We further extend the approach to solving transportation problems with intuitionistic fuzzy parameters; and compare the membership function shapes of the fuzzy solutions obtained by our approach to the fuzzy solutions to full fuzzy transportation problems yielded by approaches found in the literature

Enhancing smart healthcare in dentistry: an approach to managing patients' stress

    No full text
This paper presents a model of a smart healthcare service for stress management in dental patients during the interventions. The main goal is to provide dental clinics with a model that enables introducing a stress management service into everyday practice and provides patients with a better experience in a typically stressful situation. The approach is based on employing wearable sensors for monitoring physiological parameters, and a mobile application for progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Dental patients were divided into experimental and control groups. Participants from the experimental group were treated with progressive muscle relaxation through mobile health application with audio content, and patients from the control group were not exposed to any relaxation method. Heart rate was measured in both groups through three test phases: pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention. Evaluation of the anxiety level was performed using the STAI test. Results show that the measured heart rate in the post-intervention phase is lower than in the intervention phase in both testing groups, as well as in the pre-intervention phase. STAI scores were significantly higher in the control group through all test phases. The research found that the proposed system applied to dentist patients may relieve their anxiety symptoms and decrease stress level, which improves the patients' experience and leads to higher patients' satisfaction

Istraživanje u oblasti različitih ekoloških tema, među kojima je i tema zelenog oglašavanja, dobija sve veći značaj tokom poslednje tri decenije, iako bi tek trebalo da dostigne svoj puni potencijal. Kako koncept zelenog oglašavanja privlači sve veću pažnju naučnika, uporedo raste i znanje o ovoj temi. Research on various environmental topics, among which is the topic of green advertising, has been growing during last three decades, but it is yet to gain its full potential. Since the topic of green advertising has been gaining rising attention of scholars, the body of knowledge on this topic has been growing as well. Green advertising in general aims to promote products produced in an environmentally-friendly manner, or to promote advertiser's corporate responsibility toward an environment. The evaluation of green advertising effectiveness is necessary in order to stimulate cognitive and affective reactions of consumers to green advertisements, as well as their subsequent environmentally friendly behaviour. This article contains the review of the relevant literature on the topic of green advertising effectiveness. The findings of the literature review indicate that green advertising represents an effective communication means to influence consumers' attitudes and behaviour, even though its effectiveness is often mediated by certain factors, like: consumers' environmental consciousness, consumers' regulatory focus, consumers' scepticism, claim type

Text mining to support abstract screening for knowledge syntheses: a semi-automated workflow

    No full text
Background: Current text mining tools supporting abstract screening in systematic reviews are not widely used, in part because they lack sensitivity and precision. We set out to develop an accessible, semi-automated "workflow" to conduct abstract screening for systematic reviews and other knowledge synthesis methods. Methods: We adopt widely recommended text-mining and machine-learning methods to (1) process title-abstracts into numerical training data; and (2) train a classification model to predict eligible abstracts. The predicted abstracts are screened by human reviewers for ("true") eligibility, and the newly eligible abstracts are used to identify similar abstracts, using near-neighbor methods, which are also screened. These abstracts, as well as their eligibility results, are used to update the classification model, and the above steps are iterated until no new eligible abstracts are identified. The workflow was implemented in R and evaluated using a systematic review of insulin formulations for type-1 diabetes (14,314 abstracts) and a scoping review of knowledge-synthesis methods (17,200 abstracts). Workflow performance was evaluated against the recommended practice of screening abstracts by 2 reviewers, independently. Standard measures were examined: sensitivity (inclusion of all truly eligible abstracts), specificity (exclusion of all truly ineligible abstracts), precision (inclusion of all truly eligible abstracts among all abstracts screened as eligible), F1-score (harmonic average of sensitivity and precision), and accuracy (correctly predicted eligible or ineligible abstracts). Workload reduction was measured as the hours the workflow saved, given only a subset of abstracts needed human screening. Results: With respect to the systematic and scoping reviews respectively, the workflow attained 88%/89% sensitivity, 99%/99% specificity, 71%/72% precision, an F1-score of 7996/79%, 98%/97% accuracy, 63%/55% workload reduction, with 12%/11% fewer abstracts for full-text retrieval and screening, and 0%/1.5% missed studies in the completed reviews. Conclusion: The workflow was a sensitive, precise, and efficient alternative to the recommended practice of screening abstracts with 2 reviewers. All eligible studies were identified in the first case, while 6 studies (1.5%) were missed in the second that would likely not impact the review's conclusions. We have described the workflow in language accessible to reviewers with limited exposure to natural language processing and machine learning, and have made the code available to reviewers

Persistence and Performance in Co-Enrollment Network Embeddings: An Empirical Validation of Tinto's Student Integration Model

    No full text
In this article, we empirically validate Tinto's Student Integration model, in particular, the predictions the model makes regarding both students' academic outcomes and their dropout decisions. In doing so, we analyze three decades' worth of student enrollments at an Australian university and present a novel methodological approach using graph embedding techniques to capture both structural and neighborhood-based features of the co-enrollment network. In keeping with Tinto's model, we find that not only do these embedded representations of students' social network predict their final grade point average (GPA), but also are able to successfully classify students who dropout. Our results show that these embedded representations of a student's social network can achieve F1-scores of up to 0.79 when classifying dropout and explain up to 10% of the variance in student's final GPA. When controlling for a small set of covariates and variables common to the literature, this performance increases to 0.83 and 24%, respectively. Furthermore, the performance of these methods is robust to both changes in their parameterization and to corruption of the underlying social networks. Importantly, this implies that hyperparameters may be selected to reduce the computational demands of this method without loss of predictive power. The novelty of this method, and its ability to identify student dropout, merits further investigation to preemptively identify at-risk students

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on air pollutant emissions in cities: the case of europe’s cleanest and most polluted countries

    No full text
In this paper, we compare emissions of major air polluters from 20 March to 20 April 2020 to the same period in 2019. Our study area covers major cities in Europe’s cleanest and most polluted countries. Results show that there is a statistically significant decrease in maximum daily values of NO2 emissions in almost all cities. The concentrations of other pollutants indicate that the closure measures cannot be related to statistically significant reductions. A noticing finding is that a statistically significant reduction in pollutants (except for SO2) is more frequent in cleaner cities

Economic crisis and its effects on international trade: A case of selected EU and non-EU countries

    No full text
The aim of this chapter is to analyse the effects of the economic crisis on the trade among the Southeastern European (SEE) countries. The countries were divided into two groups: the EU countries and non-EU countries. Macroeconomic performances and international trade indicators of the 11 observed countries were analysed for the period 2007-2019, and the effects of the economic crisis were present in all the observed countries, particularly the effects on the export performances. The crisis also affected the entire import of the non-EU countries. The EU countries recovered from the crisis faster than the non-EU countries. However, the non-EU countries achieved a more significant inflow of foreign direct investment in the post-crisis period, which significantly improved the position of the balance of payments in these countries. The observed countries had managed to stabilise their trade flows all until the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. The impact of the current crisis on these countries remains to be estimated in the future

Digital dissemination of environmental and social initiatives. investigation of reporting practices in german shipping industry

    No full text
Both sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have received particular attention recently, hence becoming increasingly important in the business world as a model in building equilibrium between economic benefits and growth on the one side, and the society and the environment on the other side. CSR is a strategic business concern that indicates responsiveness towards economic and environmental issues striving for a favorable influence on the development of society, and consequently sustainable development. Along with the trend of incorporation CSR initiatives into every-day business operations, the demand for more transparency on companies’ activities in these areas has been expanding. As companies appear to increasingly engage in disclosure of information related to their environmental and social impacts, this study explores voluntary disclosure of data related to these two groups of concerns, particularly on companies’ websites. The goal of the paper is to contribute to the understanding the reporting and disclosure of sustainability data. The study particular investigates the extent to which German freight shipping companies use websites as channels for presenting their social and environmental information to the public. The research included 82 freight shipping companies, members of the German ship-owners’ association. For each company, the study measured the level of compatibility with the Global Reporting Initiative environmental and social reporting standards. The results indicate that companies seated in Hamburg, companies with group affiliation and companies with large fleets outperform those located in other German provinces, nonaffiliated shipping companies and modest-sized fleets
