Coenurosis of sheep in Serbia - case report

    No full text
Coenurosisa is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval forms of Taenia multiceps which are great host's animals from the family of canids. The disease is global distribution but is most present in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central Africa and Australia. Larvae exhibit tropism toward brain tissue, and cysts are usually located in the left hemisphere of the brain of small ruminants. Involvement of the brain can cause increased intracranial pressure, seizures, loss of consciousness, and focal neurologic deficits. During 2022 we examinee one flocks of 78 milking sheep reared on hilly pastures located below the Zmajevac hill (397 m), between the branches of the Osimćki mountains and the river Zapadna Morava, at an altitude of 178 m. Symptoms of ataxia, such as unsteady gait and stumbling, and depression were observed in 12 animals. In 5 sheep, continuous aimless or circular movement, wandering, was also manifested. In addition to these symptoms, in one sheep that died, visual disturbances were observed depression and unilateral blindness. All affected sheep were slaughtered and a pathoanatomical examination was performed. In the brain of all animals we revealed the presence of infestation with one to four coenuri 4.1-5.5 cm in size. The sites of predilection were the left hemisphere (48%), followed by the right hemisphere (40%) and the cerebellum (12%). The coenurus has a thin wall surrounding a single cavity that contains a clear fluid. When the cysts were opened, numerous scoleces were found inside, from 2 to 3 mm in diameter attached to the cyst wall. Each scolex has four circular suckers and two rows of hooks on a rostellum. The hook lengths are 147 to 165 µm and 87 to 125 µm.The results show that C. cerebralis was a major cause of the nervous manifestations of cenurosis in clinically affected sheep.Proceeding

Uzrokuju ih protozoe, helminti i artropode. Parasitic infections are a significant health problem in animals, especially kept in common pastures, where they mix different types of animals. They are caused by protozoa, helminths and arthropods. What is the prevalence and what kinds of parasites are there currently in Serbia it is difficult to say, given that such research is being carried out sporadically. This primarily refers to autochthonous species and domestic breeds animals that are not covered by the usual parasite control measures. On the basis of occasional tests, however, it is possible to get a picture of the most common parasitic infections that threaten these types of animals and they will be described in more detail below.Zbornik predavanja. - Predavanje po poziv

    No full text
This study provides the frst comprehensive report on the molecular characteristics of African swine fever virus (ASFV) variants in Serbia between 2019 and 2022. Since its frst observation in July 2019, the disease has been found in wild boar and domestic swine. The study involved the analysis of 95 ASFV-positive samples collected from 12 infected administrative districts in Serbia. Partial four genomic regions were genetically characterized, including B646L, E183L, B602L, and the intergenic region (IGR) between the I73R-I329L genes. The results of the study suggest that multiple ASFV strains belonging to genotype II are circulating in Serbia, as evidenced by the analysis of the IGR between I73R-I329L genes that showed the most diferences. Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis of the B602L gene showed three diferent clades within the CVR I group of ASFV strains. Regarding the IGR, 98.4% were grouped into IGR II, with only one positive sample grouped into the IGR III group. These fndings provide essential insights into the molecular characteristics of ASFV variants in Serbia and contribute to the knowledge of circulating strains of ASFV in Europe. However, further research is necessary to gain a better understanding of ASFV spread and evolutio

Aquaculture is an economic sector that has experienced tremendous global growth in the last few decades. The further development of aquaculture will certainly be influenced by the market, the opinion of consumers, and especially by their concern regarding the safety of the produced fish, but also the impact of fish production on the environment. Fish is considered an important food in a healthy diet, but it should be borne in mind that numerous hazards, such as microbiological, chemical and others, can get into the fish during the entire production process. Having all above mentioned in mind, it is very important to know and understand the distribution and role of these hazards along the entire production process, and it is primarily important to consider them from the aspect of one’s health. For the regular development of aquaculture, the application of good fishing practices and the strict adherence and application of existing regulations are of great importance. In order to ensure the quality and the most important the safety of the produced fish, it is necessary to introduce a quality management system. The application of biosecurity measures in primary production is also of great importance. A multidisciplinary approach, as well as the cooperation of different sectors according to the principles of One Health, can lead to an increase in the efficiency of production in aquaculture with a minimal negative effect on the environment. This approach is necessary for the sustainable development of freshwater aquaculture, and the main goal is to ensure the production of safe food, which is a prerequisite for an unhindered fish trade

    No full text
Introduction: Neonatal enteropathies of piglets were recognized as a serious problem of the modern pig industry. Today it is known that it is a multicausal disease caused by numerous agents of bacterial, viral and parasitic etiology (Jacobson, 2022) The aim of our work is to point out the importance of parasitic infections in this disease. Materials and Methods: In period 2017-2020 a total of 337 pigs, 2-21 weeks old, were exanimate. After routine necropsy, parasitological, bacteriological and viral evaluations were performed, as required to establish the cause of disease in each pig. To parasitological examination we used faecal swab, gut contents and a mucous scrape of gut which we examined with Sheathers sugar flotation and in direct smears stained with Gimsa strain. Results: During our examination Eimeria sp. were detected at two week old piglet at 4.22%, Ispsora suis at 2-4 week old piglet at 12,34% and cryptosporidial organisms were detected in the microvillus brush border in the intestine of the pigs ranged from 7-12 weeks old at 61,36%. Based on the time of onset of neonatal enteropathies, Cryptosporidium sp. was confirmed as the main parasitic agent of its occurrence. These results are similar to our previous research (Pavlovic et al., 2007) Conclusion: The role of infection with criptosporidia in the occurrence of neonatal enteropathies in piglets, because of the multiple agents, which cause this disease, has not been fully explained, but our examination indicated that cryptosporidia might act, either in itself or in concert with other agents to induce or exacerbate clinical disease

Organic acids as solvents for leaching PAHs out of impregnated wood

    No full text
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of hydrophobic organic compounds, which are ubiquitous in the environment. Some of them exhibit toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity [1]. There is a high PAH content in creosote impregnated wood [2]. Creosote impregnated wood which was used and discarded becomes hazardous waste. Concentration of PAHs in used impregnated wood can be reduced by leaching with suitable solvent systems. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare different organic acids solvent systems for leaching PAHs out of impregnated wood to obtain non-hazardous waste. Leaching tests on impregnated wood were performed with 15 % water solution of urea, concentrated formic acid, 15 % solution of urea in formic acid and glacial acetic acid [3]. Concentration of PAHs in extracts was measured by GC-FID technique. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that were determined are naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a] anthracene and chrysene.Poster prezentacije, Kladovo, 4-7th June 202

Coccidiosis of pet cats in Belgrade area during 2021

    No full text
Feline coccidiosis is a disease of mostly young animals and regardless of the large number of infected animals, the disease rarely appears. The causative agents are coccidia from the genus Cystoisospora (Isospora) (C. felis, C. bigemina and C. rvolta) and Eimeridae (Eimeria felina and E. cati). Infection is produced orally by coccidia oocysts. Parasites are located in the mucosa of the small intestine. Infections pass in most cases asymptomatic. In severe infections, in kittens long-term bloody diarrhea occurs, there is a general weakness and loss of appetite, and the animals lose weight quickly. Depending on the severity of the infection, death is possible, especially with infections with Cystoisospora felis. In animals that have recovered, the symptoms subside 5 to 7 days. During 2021 we examined feces of 81 pets cats that had symptoms of dysentery, diarrhea, weight loss, fainting and abdominal pain. It usually occurs in young animals. A fecal sample is examined for oocysts using fecal flotation (saturated salt or sucrose solutions). Speciation should be undertaken, and in puppies this may require artificial sporulation of the oocysts with potassium dichromate. Infection with Cystoisospora felis we established in 22.13%, with C. rvolta in 3.27% and with Eimeria cati in 11.18% of examined cats. The proceeding boo

    No full text
Osnovni cilj programa kontrole kokcidioze ovaca jeste podizanje zdravstvenog statusa ovaca u Republici Srbiji. Sprečavanjem pojave i širenja kocidioze preduzimanjem određenih biotehničkih i zdravstvenih mera koje imaju ulogu da smanje prevalenciju parazita, postiže se veći prirast i bolji proizvodni rezultati ovaca. Primena ovog integrisanog koncepta kontrole infekcije parazitima zahteva sistematsko praćenje infekcije na farmama, pre i posle primenjenih mera i zahteva uključivanje svih relevantnih subjekata, prvenstveno veterinarske službe, počev od farmi, pa do radnika sa životinjama

A multi gene-approach genotyping method identifies 24 genetic clusters within the genotype II-European African swine fever viruses circulating from 2007 to 2022

    No full text
IntroductionAfrican swine fever (ASF) is a contagious viral disease of pigs and wild boar that poses a major threat to the global swine industry. The genotype II African swine fever virus (ASFV) entered the European Union (EU) in 2014 and since then fourteen countries have been affected, Italy and North Macedonia being the last in 2022. While whole genome sequencing remains the gold standard for the identification of new genetic markers, sequencing of multiple loci with significant variations could be used as a rapid and cost-effective alternative to track outbreaks and study disease evolution in endemic areas. Materials and methodsTo further our understanding of the epidemiology and spread of ASFV in Europe, 382 isolates collected during 2007 to 2022 were sequenced. The study was initially performed by sequencing the central variable region (CVR), the intergenic region (IGR) between the I73R and I329L genes and the O174L and K145R genes. For further discrimination, two new PCRs were designed to amplify the IGR between the 9R and 10R genes of the multigene family 505 (MGF505) and the IGR between the I329L and I215L genes. The sequences obtained were compared with genotype II isolates from Europe and Asia. ResultsThe combination of the results obtained by sequencing these variable regions allowed to differentiate the European II-ASFV genotypes into 24 different groups. In addition, the SNP identified in the IGR I329L-I215L region, not previously described, grouped the viruses from North Macedonia that caused the 2022 outbreaks with viruses from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece, differentiating from other genotype II isolates present in Europe and Asia. Furthermore, tandem repeat sequence (TRS) within the 9R-10R genes of the multigene family 505 (MGF505) revealed eight different variants circulating. DiscussionThese findings describe a new multi-gene approach sequencing method that can be used in routine genotyping to determine the origin of new introductions in ASF-free areas and track infection dynamics in endemic areas

    No full text
