Detection of “Salmonella spp.” in Clinical and Food Samples from Poultry (2020–2025): A Broiler Farm Outbreak Case Study — Highlighting Biosecurity and Economic Implications
This study analyzed the positive rate of Salmonella spp. in chicken primary production and food samples examined at the Scientific Institute of Veterinary Medicine of Serbia between 2020 and 2025 and evaluated biosecurity measures on a broiler farm during an outbreak. A total of 2,728 primary production samples and 6,289 food samples were tested. Salmonella was detected in 3.23% of the primary output and 9.76% of food samples, with S. Enteritidis being the most common serovar. A detailed biosecurity assessment of the affected farm revealed an overall score of 90%, surpassing national and global averages, yet it identified critical gaps in broiler depopulation, carcass removal, and cleaning protocols. An economic analysis showed a loss exceeding 58.2% per production cycle of 10,000 broilers due to market restrictions following Salmonella detection. These findings highlight the need for continuous biosecurity improvements and rigorous surveillance to mitigate Salmonella risk and reduce financial impacts in poultry production. The paper was presented at the 63rd International Meat Industry Conference “Food for Thought: Innovations in Food and Nutrition” ‒ Zlatibor, October 05th-08th 2025
Detection of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus in a Case Series of Clinically Cachectic Cattle from Tiaret, Algeria
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) poses a serious disease in cattle. Cachexia is a condition marked by weight loss and muscle wasting and is often observed in infected animals. This study reports a case series from Tiaret province, Algeria, aimed at detecting and genetically identifying BVDV in clinically cachectic cattle. A total of 100 cachectic animals from ten herds were examined using serological, molecular, and virological methods, including antibody ELISA, RT-qPCR, and virus isolation in cell culture. Overall, 93.6% of the animals tested were seropositive for BVDV, indicating extensive exposure to the sampled population. Higher antibody rates were observed in adults (≥12 months) and males compared to younger animals and females, but the differences were not statistically significant. Phylogenetic analysis of the 5′UTR sequences confirmed the presence of the BVDV-1f subtype closely related to sequences reported in Europe. Although BVDV was detected in animals within the sampled herds, the data does not support a causal conclusion that BVDVwasthedirectcauseofcachexiainthiscaseseries; rather, its immunosuppressive effects may predispose cattle to secondary infections contributing to wasting. These results are specific to this opportunistic case series from Tiaret province and should be considered exploratory; broader and representative surveillance is required to assess the national epidemiological situation
Investigation of parameters relevant to the pheasant population in Serbia from 1999 to 2023
The aim of this study was to present data on the number of pheasants, their harvested numbersdue to hunting, the volume of obtained meat, and the numbers of pheasantries, feedinggrounds for small feathered game, and hunters in Serbia from 1999 to 2023, based ondata from the Statistical Yearbooks of Serbia, which report these parameters for each oddnumberedyear. The average number of pheasants during the study period was 373 thousand, with 146.2 thousand harvested (39.28% of the total population). From the harvested pheasants,102.4 tons of meat was obtained. The average number of pheasantries was 500.5, withvarying production capacities. For supplementary feeding of pheasants from late autumnuntil spring, an average of 23,880 feeding grounds were installed, maintained by an averageof 83,622 hunters. All examined parameters showed a slight increasing trend from 1999 to2023, except for the number of pheasants, which showed a decline
Porcine reproductive respiratory syndrome as a health problem in swine production
Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is an acute viral disease that manifests as
reproductive and respiratory lesions in sows and pigs. PRRS affects all categories of pigs, but
pregnant sows and piglets are most at risk. The disease is manifested by abortions, increased
numbers of stillborn piglets, poor vitality of newborn piglets, and the appearance of respiratory
symptoms in pigs of all ages. The virus is shed from the infected organism in saliva, urine,
feces, and semen. The virus persists in facilities with a continuous turnover of pigs as the
pathogen is transmitted from older infected pigs to newly arrived, uninfected pigs. Infection
occurs through dietary, airborne, and seminal routes. In this paper, we have provided an
overview of PRRS research. We intended to present the production indicators in this article as
a semi-decision of the presence of PRRS on an industrial-type pig farm. The greatest losses in
fattening pigs occurred in the first 3 months after the disease outbreak, and in 3-12 months, the
mortality rate gradually decreased. The costs of preventing and treating secondary bacterial
infections during the 12 months after the outbreak were, on average, about 40 percent higher
than in the period before the outbreak.Book of Proceedings [Електронски извор]https://agrosym.ues.rs.ba/article/showpdf/BOOK_OF_PROCE EDINGS_2025_FINAL.pdf
Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of canine distemper virus in wild carnivores in Serbia
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Morbillivirus, family Paramyxoviridae, and is widely distributed among domestic and wild carnivore populations. Canine distemper is a highly contagious infectious disease that primarily affects dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). Still, due to its ability to infect various carnivore species, it poses a potential threat to endangered wildlife populations. This study focuses on the characterization and molecular evolution of the hemagglutinin gene of CDV in golden jackals (Canis aureus) in Serbia. Brain tissue samples from 88 individuals were analyzed and tested for the presence of CDV nucleic acid using rtRT-PCR. In CDV-positive samples, the hemagglutinin gene was amplified and sequenced using the Sanger method. Out of 88 tested individuals, 7 (7.9%) were confirmed to be positive for CDV. Sequencing results yielded one complete hemagglutinin gene sequence and six partial sequences. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all obtained CDV sequences belonged to the Arctic lineage. A mutation was identified at position 549 of the hemagglutinin protein, where tyrosine was present instead of histidine, a characteristic feature of CDV strains circulating in wildlife. Additionally, a mutation at position 310 was detected, which may influence hemagglutinin function and virus-host interactions. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the genetic diversity and evolution of CDV in golden jackals, with broader implications for studying the virus's adaptation to different hosts. Further research is needed to investigate the functional consequences of the identified mutations, particularly their impact on vaccine efficacy and potential transmission between wild and domestic animals.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj
Uncommon pathogen in small animal practice: a case of dog splenitis caused by Clostridium novyi type B
Clostridium novyi type B is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, and obligatory anaerobic bacterium known to cause infectious necrotic hepatitis (black disease) in large animals, particularly sheep and cattle. However, its occurrence in dogs is extremely rare and is primarily associated with liver infections. This report presents the first documented case of splenitis caused by C. novyi type B in a dog. A dog with symptoms of splenitis (apathy, anorexia, vomiting, fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, and abdominal pain on palpation) was admitted to a veterinary clinic. Аfter ultrasound diagnostics revealed marked splenomegaly, a splenectomy was performed, and the removed spleen was sent for microbiological examination. Anaerobic culture on blood agar revealed colonies with irregular shapes and beta-hemolysis and Gram staining confirmed the presence of Gram-positive rods with endospores. Biochemical identification using the BBL Crystal ANR ID kit indicated C. novyi with 92% identity. Multiplex PCR targeting the fliC gene and subsequent Sanger sequencing confirmed the isolate as C. novyi type B with 99.53% similarity to reference strains. Phylogenetic analysis supported the identification, with the sequence deposited in GenBank (accession number PP393674). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed no resistance to tested antibiotics. This case highlights the diagnostic value of molecular techniques, particularly PCR and sequencing, for identifying rare bacterial pathogens. Given the low number of documented C. novyi type B infections in dogs, this report contributes valuable insights into its clinical presentation, diagnosis, and epidemiology. Further research is needed to discover potential risk factors, predisposing conditions, and the role of C. novyi in canine splenitis.Zbornik kratkih sadržaj
When diagnosis is misleading – rethink it
Veterinary practice is challenged with identification of vector-borne pathogens that could be imported from other continents, and even though their vectors are not present in Serbia, they could propagate through alternative ways. The other common challenge is the diagnostics of comorbidities. This case summarizes clinical findings in a two-year-old male American Staffordshire Terrier imported from Mexico to Serbia in 2022, without previous testing of vector-borne diseases (VBDs). The owner reported a recurrent weakness and a history of lameness and lymphadenopathy during the dog’s first year, causing numerous visits to veterinarians without a final diagnosis or resolution of the signs. Applied therapeutics included imidocarb dipropionate, due to recurrent icterus and suspicion of Babesia spp. infection. In November 2023, the dog was presented with vomiting and lethargy. Clinical examination confirmed anorexia, pale mucous membranes, mild fever, and enlarged lymph nodes. Structures resembling small babesia were identified on a blood smear. Over the following month, blood, buccal swabs, urine, and popliteal lymph node’s aspirate were collected for molecular analysis. Hematology results showed moderate, regenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia, while Babesia gibsoni was confirmed by PCR. Therapy included azithromycin (10 mg/kg q24H), atovaquone (20 mg/kg q12H), and a single dose of NSAIDs. Improvement was noted, however, lymphadenopathy persisted. Indicated dermatological examination confirmed a nutritional allergy to chicken meat. It was subsequently removed from the dog’s diet, resulting with reduction in lymph nodes’ size. The overall weakness of the dog, reported by the owner since the beginning, and unsuccessful imidocarb dipropionate treatment, emphasize the necessity of providing adequate diagnostics when Babesia spp. is considered as an etiology. Although after import from Mexico, no VBD tests were performed, there is a high suspicion that the dog was infected in its original place of birth. Chronic B. gibsoni infection could have provoked immune imbalance and consecutively, allergic response
Contemporary concept of parasitic infections control in farm breeding pigs
he main goal of the control and prevent program of parasite infection is to raise the health status
of pigs in farm breeding. By preventing the appearance and spread of parasitic infections by taking
certain preventive measures, the basic task is to reduce the prevalence of parasites, which achieves
that as few infected animals reach the slaughterhouse as possible. In addition, taking prescribed
measures at the slaughterhouse aims to keep the risk of parasitic zoonoses in meat and pork
products at zero level. The application of this contemporary integrated concept implies production
process management and adherence to the principles of good production practices, application of
biosecurity measures, sanitacion and aplication of hygiene measures and sustainable health
protection. Certainly, the complexity of the problem required the involvement of all relevant
entities, primarily veterinary services, starting from farms to slaughterhouses.Referat po poziv
Oralna vakcinacija lisica i drugih divljih mesojeda protiv besnila u Republici Srbiji – rezultati i analiza monitoringa u sezoni 2024/2025
Besnilo je infektivna bolest sisara prouzorkovana virusima roda Lyssavirus, familije
Rhabdoviridae (Walker i sar., 2022). Bolest odlikuju akutni, progresivan tok,
simptomi encefalitisa i letalan ishod.
2010. godine sprovodi oralna vakcinacija lisica i drugih divljih mesojeda protiv
besnila (ORV).
vakcine “Lysvulpen” (Bioveta a.s., Češka) koja sadrži SAD Bern i SAD B19 “like” sojeve
korišćenjem GPS uređaja i kompjuterskog softvera beleženi broj, vreme i lokacija
i Kolubarskog okruga.
vakcinacije, a u skladu sa donetim “Planom sprovođenja monitoringa efikasnosti
oralne vakcinacije lisica i drugih divljih mesojeda protiv besnila u Republici Srbiji”
uzorkovanje i laboratorijsko ispitivanje dostavljenih uzoraka. Efikasnost sprovedene
vakcinacije je evaluirana kroz ispitivanje prisustva specifičnih antitela protiv virusa
besnila u krvi i telesnim tečnostima odstreljenih divljih karnivora. Pored toga praćena je konzumacija mamca vakcine kroz analizu prisustva biomarkera prisutnog
u matriksu mamca (tetraciklin hidrohlorid) u vilici. Takođe, svaka životinja je
testirana i na besnilo ispitivanjem uzorka moždanog tkiva na prisustvo antigena
virusa.
marta 2025. godine, odnosno do sprovođenja nove prolećne kampanje vakcinacije. U
Primenom testa fluorescentnih antitela virus besnila nije
utvrđen ni u jednom od 2163 ispitana uzorka. Konzumacija matriksa vakcine,
odnosno prisustvo tetraciklina u transverzalnom preseku donje vilice je potvrđeno
kod 74.9% testiranih životinja. Primenom imunoemzimskog testa (ELISA)
ostvarena je niža serokonverzija (EURL for rabies, 2024).
odnosno izvođenja laboratorijske analize, dovodeći do lažno negativnog rezultata. I
