The Basic Elements of the Orthodox Gnoseology
The fact is that our modern knowledge, transmitted to power, transmitted into technology, threatens not only us as humans, but also the entire planet and the entire system of life. That's why the problem of knowledge (also knowledge of God) is very current. The Orthodox contribution to the gnoseological question is reflected in the approach that the knowledge is considered as personal, ecclesiastical and sotiriological category, it's evidenced by both traditional and sacramental sources
Genesis 2, 4b - 3, 24 in the Light of Acadian Literature
The discovery of ancient Near Eastern texts has significantly influenced our understanding of Holy Scripture. New and important aspects of the meaning of biblical texts emerged only in the light of these texts and their message became clearer in context of the world in which they were written. The relationship between biblical and Near Eastern texts has held the attention of scholars from the first half of the nineteenth century until today. However, this relationship was sometimes a cause for controversy: on the one hand, the influence of Acadian literature on biblical texts was overly emphasized, while on the other hand one part of biblical scholarship simply refused to admit the significance of Acadian texts. Among the ancient Near Eastern texts the Acadian literary corpus has a significant place. The term Acadian literature designates many texts of ancient Babylonia and Assyria and they were written in cuneiform script. The Old Testament appears on Ancient Orient literary scene at least half a millennia after the capital works of Acadian literature. Topics like the creation of the world, the beginning of man and his early history occupied not only the minds of biblical authors but also of Acadian scribes. Thus, many people asked whether these texts influenced one another, especially in the context of Acadian influence on biblical texts. The history of research in this field shows that too much attention has been dedicated to the creation of the world (cosmogony) in Genesis 1 and Acadian myths, compared to the creation of man and his early history in Genesis 2-3 and Acadian myths (anthropogony). Although there were a lot of studies in which Gen 2-3 was compared to Acadian literature, they were focused either on one particular Acadian text or occupied with one particular literary motif. Until today there has been no study in this field which would gather all Acadian texts relating to Genesis 2-3, focusing on creation of man and his early history and simultaneously comparing them. The lack of such comprehensive study was a motif for writing this dissertation. Altogether eleven key Acadian passages (so as many particular sentences from other scattered sources) were thoroughly analyzed in this work: Atrahasis I, 192-295, Enuma Elish VI, 1-40, Gilgamesh Epic I, 94-112; I, 194-210, XI, 278-309, KAR4, Myth of Marduks Creation, Myth of Creation of Man and King, The Adapa Story, The Etana Story, Myth of creation of living beings, “When Anu created heavens”. The goal of this work is to answer two basic questions of this dissertation: 1) In which manner did the biblical writer in Genesis 2, 4б – 3, 24 use the above mentioned Acadian texts together with various ancient Near Eastern traditions and religious concepts? 2) How did he evaluate them in his text and what is it telling us about the creation of man, the nature of his being, his relationship with his Creator, the meaning of his existence and his position in the world? The scientific-methodological discourse of this doctorate is, above all, diachronic (historical criticism). Therefore were Genesis 2-3 and Acadian texts thoroughly analyzed by methodical framework of historical criticism with all his gradual steps. However, because of the deficiency of the diachronic approach in some particular exegetical aspects, in this work we vii have also applied a synchronic approach. The applied methods of synchronic approach are: canonical reading, canonical-intertextuality and patristic exegesis. After the detailed analysis of particular texts we came to the conclusion that Genesis 2-3 as integral text has no direct parallels in above mentioned Acadian texts, not in any verbal, structural or content aspects. However, in some particular literary motifs we can recognize an echo of ancient Acadian traditions which reached the biblical author through the common Semitic tradition or common religious concepts. The author of Gen 2-3 used only those motifs which were easily adaptable to his theological concept. Simultaneously, he emptied those motifs of their mythic context, at the same time keeping their literary vividness. Acadian texts are representing man in a slave relationship towards his creators and social hierarchy, whose purpose of existence is merely to provide for the gods by working hard on the fields of Mesopotamia. Simply put, the goal of man’s creation is to “dig channels” (for irrigation). This man is a “toy for gods” (e.g. like in the Great Flood and in the Gilgamesh Epic), and his destiny (acadian šimtu) could only be changed by practising magic. Still, death is unavoidable and every attempt to overcome it is in vain, since the gods kept eternal life only for themselves (e. g. the Gilgamesh Epic). On the other hand, The Book of Genesis presents us with a free man, for whom God planted the Garden of Eden and whose purpose is to live in abundance and in close relationship of love with Creator, woman and animals. The fruits of this man belong only for him, since Yahweh does not need “to eat” like the gods from Babylonian pantheon. Eternal life for biblical man is not unreachable and his mortal life is a consequence of free choice. Therefore, the understanding of human dignity and his position in the world are almost antipodes in Genesis 2-3 and the Acadian texts. Consequently, we come to the answer to the basic questions of this dissertation: the biblical author made a subversive reception of Acadian traditions. The biblical understanding of human being is completely “revolutionary” for the epoch in which it emerged exceeding by far the anthropology of Ancient Orient. It is thus understandable why among many others this text especially became one of the most influential and inspiring texts of human history which later became a basis for the self-understanding of modern man
From the Culture of Dialogue Towards a Dialogical Culture: Theology, Culture and Media
This article analyses the concept of the culture of dialogue in regard to three aspects: the broadest political and historical context; the potential which I find Christian theological thought has in this regard and which is usually not evident in the public discourse; and the actual practice of the culture of dialogue in the dominant frame defined by the media. My final aim is to reconsider the concept of the culture of dialogue in perspective of its possible openness towards the concept of the dialogical culture or culture as dialogue, which may be much broader and deeper in terms of philosophical and anthropological potency and relevance
International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue (ICAOTD) 1973-2018: History, Structure, Goals
In this study essay the author presents the theological, historical and ecclesial presuppositions for the establishment of the important official structure for ecumenically oriented dialogue of the Anglican Church and the Orthodox Church: namely, the International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue (ICAOTD 1973-2018). Therefore, in this essay the main historical phases of the Commission's work are laid out and considered. Alongside, special critical attention is given to the examination of the main theological goals, burning issues, notwithstanding problems and crises which the Commission, thus far, faced in its systematically posited and consistently realized work. The theological and ecumenical path of the Commission is contextualized both with regard to the preceding history of Anglican-Orthodox relations and with regard to contemporary historical events within both Churches, respectively. The main theological basis for the author's reflections about the results of the Commission's work is offered by the main ICAOTD agreed statements. These documents are the fruit of a series of significant plenary gatherings during which the main questions and problems were carefully and methodically considered through ensuing discussions
"I Will Set Up a Lamp for My Anointed One…" (Ps 131/132, 17): Light Offering in the Christian Worship
In this study have been researched historical and theological aspects of function and meaning of light offering in the Christian Worship. Taking into account contemporary social and liturgical challenges, in the first part of this work has been primarily considered the role of light in religious life of humankind. In the second part of this study the light offering and candling light in liturgical life of the Christians have been viewed through the prism of space and time of common worship of the Orthodox Church
Faith, Science and the Question of Death: Retrieving the Philosophical Vision of Nikolai F. Fyodorov
In this study I critically discuss the religious philosophy of Nikolai F. Fyodorov. Beforehand I will offer a synoptic overview of its key components. The thought of Fyodorov may serve as a model for case study work in regard to two crucial questions: (1) What is the relation between the past and the future? and (2) What is the relation between faith and science? These questions receive their spiritual, theological and philosophical answers through Fyodorov’s reflection on the (3) overcoming of death. In offering his answers Fyodorov taps into the innermost depths of Christian spirituality which is interpreted in ways which are not always ‘Orthodox’ in the conventional sense. On one hand he offers a vision which prophetically yet idiosyncratically anticipates the “resurrection of all by all” (viz. Philosophy of the Common Task): this in itself calls for a radical revision of humanity’s guiding ethical, political and cultural principles (viz. Supramoralism). On the other hand, he expounds visionary proposals for the role science has to play precisely within the project of resurrecting the deceased and restoring free conscious life to all being (viz. Regulation). Fyodorov is acclaimed as one of the pioneering anticipators of climatology, rocket and space astronautics, cryonics, genetic engineering, cloning and body re-design; also, he is endorsed as the forerunner of Russian cosmism and influencer of transhumanism. His thought is radical, maximalist and limital. As well, it is informed by the purity of a moral saintliness. Inasmuch his philosophical vision may help us re-examine our own understanding of the relation of the past to the future, as well as the relation of faith to science, and, to re-address the predicament of dying. For the same reason it allows us to metacritically examine the neuralgic points of Fyodorov’s proposals. Lastly, I strive to reflect the mentioned problematic within a historical perspective, hermeneutically, hoping to provide orientation points for further discussion
The notion of faith (πιστισ) in the first epistle to the Corinthians of St Clement of Rome
The First Epistle to the Corinthians of St Clement of Rome is one of the most ancient patristic documents from the body of texts of Christian literature. It reflects diversified theological and cultural issues from the turbulent transitional period, from the apostolic to the post-apostolic era of the primitive Christianity. What triggered the writing of the epistle was the unrest and upheaval in the Corinthian community of Christians caused by the illegitimate deposal of some of the local presbyters. In the epistle, the subject of respect for the ecclesial structures and the hierarchical order is directly connected to the notion of the authentic faith. In this context, the present paper offers a presentation of an early Christian attitude of connecting the faith (πίστις) with a distinct ethos which the author of the Epistle illustrates by means of exegesis of paradigmatic Old and New Testament texts. The resolution of conflict, which is Clement’s primary goal, is reconstructed by means of examining his mode of combining the faith with works or with practical manifestation which implies sociological and not merely individual and introspective connotations. A faith put in practice should unequivocally be manifested by the strive for concord and peace, by a practice of humility, gentleness, hospitality, obedience, and other virtues which build cohesion, instead of destruction, in the community of Christians. A contribution of the present paper is to be found mainly in the analysis of Clements’s theological interpretation of tension between faith and works which was prominent in the earliest New Testament and Patristic writings, but also in the contemporary theological thought as well
Anglo-Saxon art. Chronology, Influences, Perspectives
This article deals with styles of Anglo-Saxon art arranged in chronological order with particular reference to Celtic and Scandinavian influences. A specific chapter of the article discusses three perspectives of Anglo-Saxon art, namely the mutual relationship between Anglo-Saxon, Celtic and Scandinavian art; the Holy Scriptures in Anglo-Saxon art; the new approach to icons and iconology in the West (Carolingian Empire) in the Middle Ages. These perspectives clearly show how close the cultural and social connections between the peoples of the British Isles and the northern parts of Western Europe were in the Middle Ages; they also demonstrate what these connections have given to subsequent generations, namely the Holy Scripture as an artistic and religious ideal (sola Scriptura), reinterpretation of the icon in the result of the statutes of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, the Council in Frankfurt (794) and Libra Carolini, i.e. the artistic and theological look at the veneration of icons of the later times that originated in Aachen and spread in the Protestant milieu of Western Europe. There are three elements observed in the art of Anglo-Saxon England which were always present in artwork and artefacts, namely colour, correlation of abstract ornamentation and figurative painting, continuous reception of influences from Ireland, Scandinavia, continental Europe. The main hypothesis of the article is that the Anglo-Saxon approach to art with all its influences and periodical syncretism at the turn of the first and second millenia AD has conditioned changes in the expression of the religious feeling of Germanic peoples of continental Western Europe. In the context of the Carolingian Renaissance (which included particular attention to the Holy Scriptures and Charles’ the Great ideas on iconoclasm), this conditioned the fact that in Protestant circles of the later period the Holy Scriptures are taken as the sole creed in the church, whereas icons are not venerated in the same fashion as in the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches.
The Role of Vicar Bishop Dositej (Stojković) at the Beginning of the Church Schism in Macedonia in 1958
This article deals with the Church schism in the People’s Republic of Macedonia after World War II, on the basis of historical sources from the Archives of Yugoslavia and the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), with special attention devoted, within a broader context, to the roles of Patriarchs of SOC Vikentije and German in the resolution of the Church schism in PR Macedonia. The first part of the paper presents a chronological review of Church conditions in this southern Yugoslav federal unit after World War II, while the second analyzes the role of the Serbian Patriarch’s vicar bishop, Bishop of Toplica Dositej (Stojković), and his activity connected with the church-national assembly held in Ohrid in October 1958, followed by his participation in the establishment of a new hierarchy in PR Macedonia and the creation of the Church schism
Theology with a Human Face
This paper starts from the fact that every theology is contextual and that even passive modes of theology are informed by the context. Thus the issue at stake is rather creativity than contextuality. Has Orthodox theology drifted into ‘docetism’ by uncritically ignoring history, escaping from the present, and becoming irrelevant to society? Pleading for a Theology with a Human Face, the author discusses the credibility of the church by emphasizing that its message depends on its capacity to free itself from structures that are more reflexive of feudal societies than the kingdom of God
