The quantitative structure-retention relationship of the gc-ms profile of yarrow essential oil
In the essential oil of yarrow (Achillea millefolium L. sensu lato) collected from natural population on Mt. Rtanj (Serbia) and distilled by Clevenger apparatus 104 compounds were detected, and the most abundant were camphor (9.8%), caryophyllene oxide (6.5%), terpinen-4-ol (6.3%) and 1,8-cineole (5.6%). The quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) model was employed to predict the retention indices, using four molecular descriptors selected by factor analysis and a genetic algorithm. The coefficients of determination reached the value of 0.862, demonstrating that this model could be used for prediction purposes
Mathematical modeling for genomic selection in serbian dairy cattle
This manuscript has come as a result of an efficient breeding program in Serbian cattle populations for some economically important traits. Genomic selection in the last two decades has been the main challenge in animal breeding programs and genetics. Many SNP markers are used in statistical analysis in predicting the accuracy of breeding values for young animals without their performance. The new breeding tendency in the selection of young animals allows their genetic progress with reducing cost. In this study, 92 Holstein cows from various regions in Serbia were analyzed based on SNP molecular markers. Within this investigation, an empirical model was developed for the prediction of Yield Traits and Fertility Traits variables, according to Key traits data for dairy cattle. The developed model gave a reasonable fit to the data and successfully predicted Yield Traits (such as Fat and Protein Percent, Cheese Merit, Fluid Merit, and Cow Livability) and Fertility Traits variables (such as Sire Calving Ease, Heifer Conception Rate, Cow Conception Rate, Daughter Stillbirth, Sire Stillbirth, and Gestation Length. A total of 92 dairy cattle data were used to build a prediction model for the prediction of Yield Traits and Fertility Traits variables. The artificial neural network model, based on the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno iterative algorithm, showed good prediction capabilities (the r(2) values during the training cycle for the before mentioned output variables were in the range between 0.444 and 0.989)
The effects of meldonium on the acute ischemia/reperfusion liver injury in rats
Acute ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) liver injury is a clinical condition challenging to treat. Meldonium is an anti-ischemic agent that shifts energy production from fatty acid oxidation to less oxygen-consuming glycolysis. Thus, we investigated the effects of a 4-week meldonium pre-treatment (300 mg/kg b.m./day) on the acute I/R liver injury in Wistar strain male rats. Our results showed that meldonium ameliorates I/R-induced liver inflammation and injury, as confirmed by liver histology, and by attenuation of serum alanine- and aspartate aminotransferase activity, serum and liver high mobility group box 1 protein expression, and liver expression of Bax/Bcl2, haptoglobin, and the phosphorylated nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells. Through the increased hepatic activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, meldonium improves the antioxidative defence in the liver of animals subjected to I/R, as proved by an increase in serum and liver ascorbic/dehydroascorbic acid ratio, hepatic haem oxygenase 1 expression, glutathione and free thiol groups content, and hepatic copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, manganese superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activity. Based on our results, it can be concluded that meldonium represent a protective agent against I/R-induced liver injury, with a clinical significance in surgical procedures
Pink oyster mushroom Pleurotus flabellatus mycelium produced by an airlift bioreactor-the evidence of potent in vitro biological activities
Four types of mycelial extracts were derived from the airlift liquid fermentation (ALF) of Pleurotus flabellatus, namely exopolysaccharide (EX), endopolysaccharide (EN), hot water (WE), and hot alkali (AE) extracts. Such extracts were screened for their active components and biological potential. EN proved to be most effective in inhibition of lipid peroxidation (EC50=1.710.02 mg/mL) and in Cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay (EC50=2.910.01 mg TE/g). AE exhibited most pronounced ability to chelate ferrous ions (EC50=4.96 +/- 0.08 mg/mL) and to scavenge ABTS radicals (EC50=3.36 +/- 0.03 mg TE/g). beta -glucans and total phenols contributed most to the chelating ability and quenching of ABTS radicals. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation correlated best with total glucans, total proteins, and beta -glucans. Total proteins contributed most to CUPRAC antioxidant capacity. Antifungal effect was determined against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (MIC: 0.019-0.625 mg/mL; MFC: 0.039-2.5 mg/mL), and towards C. albicans clinical isolate (MIC and MFC: 10.0-20.0 mg/mL). Comparison of cytotoxicity against colorectal carcinoma HCT 116 cells (IC50: 1.8 +/- 0.3-24.6 +/- 4.2 mg/mL) and normal lung MRC-5 fibroblasts (IC50: 17.0 +/- 4.2-42.1 +/- 6.1 mg/mL) showed that EN, and especially AE possess selective anticancer activity (SI values 3.41 and 9.44, respectively). Slight genotoxicity was observed only for AE and EX, indicating the low risk concerning this feature. Notable antioxidative and anticandidal activities, selective cytotoxicity against colorectal carcinoma cells, and absence/low genotoxicity pointed out that ALF-cultivated P. flabellatus mycelium could be considered as a valuable source of bioactive substances.
