    “Trace” in Narration

    No full text
The Derridean concept of “trace” or supplement is set at the core of his studies of the unconscious meaning of a text. Further, the textual unconscious is crucial to the deferral of meaning along the axis of difference / différance. In view of Derrida’s ideas, Kazuo Ishigoro’s novels, The Pale View of Hills and When We Were Orphans are analyzed as a narrative attempt to deconstruct the construction of reality that is grounded in conventional discourse. The article is based on the assumption that in Ishiguro’s novels the narrative process offers an insight into how the mind deals with experience. In this vein, the complex narration in Ishiguro’s novels is viewed as a parallel to the processes in the human mind. The analysis of Ishiguro’s narration is based on Beckett’s and Proust’s ideas about the issue of memory. Proust sees the dynamics of memory as a game of voluntary and involuntary memory, in which the former is a product of the conscious and the latter of the unconscious memory. On the other hand, Proust’s meditations on the nature of memory may be linked with Freud’s studies of repressed emotions and Samuel Beckett’s conception of the process of forgetting as essential to recollection

Reception of Malcolm Lowry in the former Yugoslavia

This paper analyses the overall reception of works written by Malcolm Lowry in the Serbo-Croatian speaking area, starting with the first translation of his masterpiece - the novel Under the Volcano - in 1966, and ending with the second edition of the same translation of this novel in 2005. The critical reception of Lowry's opus duly followed the translations, and although it is rather scarce, the quantity of the response can be judged as adequate if we take into consideration the fact that this English writer is deemed to be a ’one book author'. Both the quality of the critical texts and the duration of Lowry's reception in the former Yugoslavia can also be estimated as quite satisfactory, especially due to the fact that it continued into the twenty-first century, as well

Further on the homeland of Slavs in the light of names of some trees (elms, poplars and the aspen, and maples)

This paper is a continuation of my study The Homeland of Slays in the light of names of some trees and fish, published in 2010, in which I was able to strengthen the Middle Dnieper hypothesis, as well as to narrow the possible homeland of Slays to the area along the Pripet River. This paper presents further evidence coming from tree genera not discussed in the previous paper, namely elms, poplars and the aspen, and maples, showing that the homeland of Slays must have been situated along some river in the East European Plain, which agrees perfectly with my previous study

    No full text

Oppozicija 'blesk' - 'bez bleska' kak osnova kategorizacii cvetooboznačenij v slavjanskom fol'klore

    No full text
Na primere cvetooboznačenij lazorevyj i alyj, v russkom fol'klore, i mavi, alem, v serbskom, raskryt mehanizm usvaivanija zaimstvovannyh cvetooboznačenij v slavjanskom fol'klore. Passive constructions in Serbian contrasted with the passive sentence in Japanese language

    No full text
Pasivna rečenica u srpskom jeziku opisuje situaciju kada na mestu subjekta rečenice stoji imenica u ulozi pacijensa - predmet radnje u sintaksičkoj ulozi direktnog objekta. Grade je prelazni glagoli. Agens se najčešće ne iskazuje. Pasiv u japanskom jeziku, međutim ima svoje specifičnosti. On obuhvata i značenja posesije i štete. Ovaj tip rečenice grade i prelazni i neprelazni glagoli, i on predstavlja specifičnost japanskog jezika. This paper compares the systems of passive sentences in Serbian and Japanese in order to define their special characteristics. In Serbian, there are two ways to express passive: construction with participle and reflexive passive construction. Passive sentence in Serbian language describes the situation when the subject position is given to the noun in the role of patient - the noun in syntaxic role of direct object. It is formed by transitive verbs only. Generally, agent is not expressed. Passive in Japanese language, however, has its specific features. It includes the meaning of possession and of damage. There are two sorts of passive: direct and indirect passive. In the sentence of direct passive, the subject position is occupied by the noun in the function of direct or indirect object of the transitive verb, or by the noun in the function of the owner of the object upon which the action is performed. In the sentence of indirect passive, the subject position is occupied by a noun (person) not included by the action, but indirectly suffers or feels its influence. This type of sentence is formed by both transitive and intransitive verbs, and it represents a special characteristic of the Japanese language. Agent is expressed and the choice of its case particule depends on the nature of the noun by which it is expressed

Traditional forms of rhetorical persuasion in Aeschine's oratory

    No full text
Izučavanje Eshinovog političkog i besedničkog angažmana osvetljava nam problematiku proučavanja definicije i sadržine veštine ubeđivanja u klasičnoj retorici. Pragmatičnost Eshinovog besedništva nam omogućava da istražimo do koje mere su talenat (physis) i jedno solidno poznavanje besedničke teorije (techne) imali ključnu ulogu u formiranju ubeđivačkog umeća.The paper discusses the main elements of persuasion in Aeschines oratory. A particular aspect of the research is the comparison of Aeschines’s and Demosthenes’s oratory. It tries to give an answer how far Aeschines’s oratory, especially his art of persuasion, is the product of skill (techne), and how much it is the product of the rhetoric gift (physis)? The study of the ancient Greek rhetorical heritage provides a better and clearer demonstration of the structure and importance of a persuasion skill, both in the ancient times and in the modern communication theory. This way of looking at the rhetorical theory and praxis includes an interdisciplinary approach to this problem, which becomes increasingly integrated into the systems of modern scientific research

On some existential verbal forms in modern Greek and their translation equivalents in Serbian and Turkish

Analiza jednog broja egzistencijalih iskaza u grčkom i srpskom jeziku svedoči o visokom stepenu podudarnosti u upotrebi i značenju bezličnih egzistencijalnih glagolskih oblika. The present paper represents a synoptic view on three particular verbal existential forms in Greek, Serbian and Turkish which we have analyzed and discussed. So-called existential predication is normally expressed in Modern Greek and Serbian by impersonal forms of the verbs είναι / υπάρχει / έχει-je(ste) / postoji/ ima and by Turkish predicatives var / yok / dir (be, exist, there is/are) in any grammatical mood and time. We have also tried to describe their morphosyntactic and semantic values as well as meanings. Despite being synonymous, these forms represent certain characteristic syntactic and logical and semantic incongruences, as well as different distribution in the Greek and Serbian languages. On the other hand, great similarities are to be noted as far as the additional nominal constituent is concerned (nominative or accusative in both languages, the so-called Slavic genitive in Serbian). The main feature of existential predication is that it basically depends on communicative context, i.e. space and/or time of utterance (which is not necessarily the case when the non/existence of abstract or real notions is expressed). The third category defining this type of existential utterances is the so-called locativity (Referovskaya), which reflects the fact that the existence and location are closely interrelated. Locativity is mainly expressed when it is necessary to specify a thing or person involved in a communicative situation. All the above-mentioned components of impersonal utterances are to be combined in different ways. Though the impersonal existential forms υπάρχει/ υπάρχουν-postoji/postoje, έχει-ima and είναι-je(ste) (there/it is) may refer to different forms of existence (absolute, relative and locative respectively), all these verbal forms manifest themselves linguistically as entirely synonymous. However, the form υπάρχει-postoji represents the dynamical element denoting real physical and/or abstract (mental) presence-absence, while έχει-ima concerns the very essence of existence, touching the notion of possessiveness as well. On the other hand, the function of the existential form είναι-je(ste) in Modern Greek and Serbian, like in many other languages, is primarilly to express real state, i.e. stationary situation. In Modern Turkish such subtile variations do not exist, as they all are expressed in one basic way. In the paper we have expressed our opinion that the semantic interpretation of existential sentences does depend upon the linguistic and situational context. Thus we have supported the claim of Borschev and Partee (2002), who say that semantics has a strong influence on the choice of existential/impersonal sentence, while syntax is only the mediator through which this difference is reflected in grammar
