(Re)constructing a foreign language: On the perspectives of the application of cognitive linguistics in foreign language teaching

    No full text
Language has been studied by cognitive science for more than four decades. This paper presents basic elements and principles of constructional grammar, as a theoretical framework which grew up under the auspices of cognitive linguistics some twenty years ago, and which explores the possibilities for their application in foreign language teaching. The constructional approach to learning and acquisition of a foreign language is based on the idea that language is a set of constructions, complex linguistic units which represent paired combinations of form, meaning (and function). By such an attitude, where the knowledge of a foreign language is seen as the knowledge of the constructions of that language (closely linked with cognition and perception) the distinction between grammatical and lexical components of the language fades away and functional component of the use of the language is stressed. In this way the students build up their linguistic, cultural and pragmatic competencies

    Jung(ian)’s Approach to Literature

In his essays On the Relation of Analytical Psychology to Poetry, Psychology and Poetry: Introduction and Ulysses: a Monologue, Carl Gustav Jung looks into literary work as psychological activity, thus focusing his attention on the process of artistic creation, i.e. the psychology of creating, along with observing some aspects of the sociology of art. But, since insights of Jung’s analytical psychology became a part of the literary theory approaches to literature (such as ritual-mythological and archetypal literary criticism, as well as others, related to these), it is necessary to get to know as much as possible about Jung’s views, especially those referring to the following terms: the archetype in itself, archetypal image, symbol and sign, interpretation on the subject level and interpretation on the object level. It is also necessary to be well-versed in mechanisms and “laws” of consciousness and the unconscious. This is the only way we can avoid misunderstandings and misapplications of Jung’s postulates in analyses of literary works. It is especially important to differentiate how we will handle the archetypal aspects of the work (those that constitute its universal, human and classic quality), and how we will deal with what is personal and restrictive, and this, in turn, should be clearly separated from what is individual, specific and manifest, and therefore unique, the most important and most valuable features of a work of art..

"God knows five daughters is enough for anyone": Gender issues in India and Japan

    No full text
Gender issues are evidently among the most pressing problems in all contemporary societies, but the gap between women and men is undoubtedly rather wide in two countries which apparently do not have much in common otherwise-India and Japan. A parallel between their cultures can be found in the works of two twentieth century authors whose lives were a strange mixture of Occidental and Oriental ingredients: the recently deceased Ruth Prawer Jhabvala-a European who, having married an Indian, spent more than two decades in India-and Natsume So-seki-a Japanese whose brief two-year visit to London greatly influenced both his subsequent life and writing

    No full text
In this paper we have conducted an analysis of the content and structure or associative fields of lexemes from the semantic field of "religion and church" in Russian and Serbian languages, with the goal to identify indicators of religiousness in the consciousness of an average language user. The obtained results have been correlated with the recent sociological research of the religiousness of the Russian and Serbian citizens

Serbian as a foreign language at the faculty of philology of the university of Belgrade in online learning format

    No full text
The Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in this part of Europe, as it offers, in addition to the study of Serbian language and literature, the academic study of over thirty foreign languages, general literature, general linguistics, as well as the studies of librarianship and information science. With its departments of Serbian Language and Serbian Literature and a Center for Serbian as a Foreign Language, it represents the leading institution for learning Serbian language in the country, region and the world in general. The Center for Serbian as a foreign language, nowadays belonging amongst numerous centers and institutes of the faculty, has been offering intensive courses in Serbian language for international students or course participants since 1986. Teachers employed at this center are native speakers of Serbian language and have acquired their diploma in Serbian language (and literature) at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. Willing to promote Serbian language, literature and culture, the Government of the Republic of Serbia has initiated and implemented, since 2010, the projects World in Serbia and Serbia for the Serbs from the Region. These initiatives increased substantially the number of foreign students coming from various countries around the world to Serbia with the aim of learning Serbian language and then study in Serbia. The first, preparatory year of Serbian language consists of language classes that are held at the Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language. The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language has recently introduced the online course Serbian as a Foreign Language that lasts three months. Since this course is offered in e-learning format, it does not require physical presence of course participants, except for the final exam, which is held at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. The Centre opted for Moodle as a learning platform of the course, since it provides a wealth of possibilities when it comes to presenting course materials needed to prepare participants for A1 level exam in Serbian language. Through this platform students can have access to lessons, exercises and tests, but also to e-flashcards, helping them to memorize new words, cultural widget through which they can learn about the history and modern life of Belgrade, as well as to the forum where course participants can exchange important information related to the course, communicate and discuss relevant topics. In addition to this, there are also Skype consultations through which course participants can communicate with their teachers once a week. This paper aims at emphasizing the advantages of designing foreign language courses in online format, as well as the disadvantages, while simultaneously offering successful example of the course Serbian as a Foreign Language held at the Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade in online learning format

Phrasemes typically belong to a level higher than that of its components and components could be morphemes. The paper contains lexical phrasemes in Czech and Serbian language which arc compared in semantic, formal and idiomatic way

„Skrivanje iza Bolonje”: metonimija, metafora i pojmovno zamagljivanje u diskursu Bolonjskog procesa

    No full text
This paper presents a cognitive linguistic account of metonymic and metaphoric meaning construction in the English language discourse related to the ongoing higher education reform process in Europe widely known as “the Bologna process”. The analysis of the non-literal uses of the toponym Bologna in the pertinent discourse shows that the conceptualization and the discursive construction of the contemporary European higher education are significantly shaped by metonymic mappings in which Bologna serves as a “catch-all” metonymic vehicle with a range of often indeterminate target concepts, and by metaphoric mappings in which the conceptual complex bologna (for x) is structured in terms of various (and often inconsistent) source domains (motion, space, building, machine, plant, person, organized group, economy/trade, food/cooking), which results in unclear referential meaning and yet predominantly negative associative meaning.

Representations of voluntary and involuntary memory and forgetting in Samuel Beckett's plays

This dissertation analyzes various modes of representing voluntary and involuntary memory and forgetting in Samuel Beckett’s plays. Its primary theoretical framework is provided by a number of relevant and interconnected phenomenological and hermeneutic studies of Paul Ricoeur: Le volontaire et l’involontaire, Temps et récit, Soi-même comme un autre, La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli, and, to a lesser extent, La métaphore vive. Other theoretical starting points are found in Harald Weinrich’s influential study Lethe: Kunst und Kritik des Vergessens, as well as in Génette's and Richardson's narratology, and in different investigations of modern drama. In opposition to previous studies of mnemonic phenomena in Beckett’s plays, which interpreted them only as manifestations of memory-theater, this dissertation is equally devoted to interpreting both memory and oblivion motives in his theater. Moreover, it reveals that even some of his best known plays, such as Waiting for Godot and Krapp’s Last Tape, are paradigmatic examples of oblivion-theater. Based on the comparative reading of Ricoeur’s studies Le volontaire et l’involontaire and La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli, on the one hand, and Beckett’s plays, on the other, this dissertation divides his theatrical opus into four large parts: involuntary memory plays, voluntary memory plays, involuntary forgetting plays, and voluntary forgetting plays..

Phonetic and prosodic variation in connected speech

The segmental and suprasegmental units of continuous speech are characterized by extraordinary variability and adaptability. The segmental units vary under the influence of phonetic context, while the suprasegmental units are modified by intonation. The importance of this thesis lies in the choice of the subject matter and its research methods. Although some research of the process of continuous speech in the Serbian language was done before, the allophonic problems have not been fully covered yet, and they represent a vastly important issue for further fundamental linguistic research as well as for its application in related disciplines. The methods used here are not new, but for the first time they have been employed in a national study of this extent. Four main tasks of this thesis are: 1) to examine basic types of coarticulation: labial, lingual, velopharyngeal and laryngeal, based on the Serbian language corpus (read speech); 2) to research these processes in different units: in grammatical (morphological) words, in phonetic words (internal sandhi), and at the place of contact of phonetic words (external sandhi); 3) to explore the influence of accents on vowel qualities, and 4) to examine modifications of accentual contours. Phonetic and accent variations in read speech are examined by methods of acoustic phonetics. For the purpose of this study, 38 speakers of Neoshtokavian dialect were recorded, and the speech of 6 to 14 of them analyzed, depending on the specific goals of research..
