A Framework for Automatic Acquisition of Croatian and Serbian Verb Aspect from Corpora

    No full text
Verb aspect is a grammatical and lexical category that encodes temporal unfolding and duration of events described by verbs. It is a potentially interesting source of information for various computational tasks, but has so far not been studied in much depth from the perspective of automatic processing. Slavic languages are particularly interesting in this respect, as they encode aspect through complex and not entirely consistent lexical derivations involving prefixation and suffixation. Focusing on Croatian and Serbian, in this paper we propose a novel framework for automatic classification of their verb types into a number of fine-grained aspectual classes based on the observable morphology of verb forms. In addition, we provide a set of around 2000 verbs classified based on our framework. This set can be used for linguistic research as well as for testing automatic classification on a larger scale. With minor adjustments the approach is also applicable to other Slavic languages

Information literacy and libraries in university education

Modern life brings many opportunities in general, but it also makes us face many challenges caused by rapid changes and progress. Information literacy today is not just about reading, writing and arithmetic, but rather a combination of knowledge, skills and habits which is to be used as a unified ability to properly employ modern technology on everyday basis in order to get the relevant data and to prevent avalanches of information to overwhelm the users. So, it is actually the ability to swim in the sea of information that overwhelms us, and to locate, organize, evaluate and use information we deem adequate in an effective manner. This knowledge is a requirement for easier information retrieval, and a part of general literacy and culture as well. That is the reason behind the involvement of education systems in the ongoing creation of the information society. Modern technology nowadays permeates all aspects of our lives determining the way we communicate, spend our free time, work. Since our needs keep changing, changes must be implemented into the process of education as well. Libraries have an important place in the development of information literacy at our faculty, and so they keep changing in accordance with social changes and the needs of its users. In this day and age when we have to cope with large amounts of information on a variety of media, it is a skill to know how to find a piece of information which actually suits one's purpose. We cannot even begin to imagine modern scientific research without the use of Internet, without information being available to us all through a number of services; in that sense, libraries and librarians represent a kind of bridge between information and its users. Libraries in the world are teaming up becoming large network systems in order to meet the needs of their users. The same happens in our country where, despite the crisis and the economic transition, the libraries are trying to catch up with the world. Our teaching methodology coordinates with the Bologna declaration, which presents the European guidelines for higher education reforms and underlines the importance of the information literacy. To illustrate that, we will present the examples of COBISS (Co-operative Online Bibliographic System and Services) and KoBSON (Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition Serbia), their operational capabilities and browsing modes. Also, in this paper we will present the specifications of those subjects which being taught at the Department of Library and Information Sciences, Faculty of Philology Belgrade University, and which encompass the development of the information literacy as one of their teaching aims; in that context we shall also present the results of a survey we conducted among our fourth and fifth academic year students. In this study we wanted to explore what percentage of our students use modern technology as a learning resource

    No full text
The essay gives a survey of basic research directions in Serbian theolinguistics (in the fields of general linguistics, Serbian studies, Slavic studies and foreign philology), and presents the most important achievements in the fundamental and applicative fields of the study of the sacral language (from the synchronic perspective) which are presented in monographs, papers published in thematic anthologies, proceedings of scientific conferences and scientific journals in Serbia, Montenegro and the Republic of Srpska (with bibliographic references for the 2000-2013 period). Serbian theolinguistics, although in the stage of scientific constitution, potentially has a wide range of fundamental areas of study (some of the main issues from 2000 to 2013 were theoretical and methodological basis of theolinguistics, modern functioning of liturgical languages, confessional markedness of language levels, functional stylistics, genology and stylistics of resources, discourse theory) and spheres of application (lexicography, traductology, linguodidactics). Its perspective in the forthcoming period lies in strengthening the ties with leading centres of theolinguistics in the Slavic world and the integration of researchers of philological and theological profiles in order to further its development. The effects that initial education and training of future foreign language teachers have on their pedagogic convictions and practice have been of prime interest of numerous authors in the last three decades. In difference to previous pessimistic conclusions in which this type of intervention was assessed as weak and stressed the persistence of preconceived notions of the candidates based on personal experiences from earlier schooling, more recent studies, in the constructivistic spirit of the change of cognition of the students - future teachers is considered more widely, not only as a complete change of the contents of their convictions, i.e. a sudden turn in their attitudes on the group level, but also as a smaller or bigger level of idiosyncratic reconstruction of the existing pedagogic convictions which happens because of acquiring new information and experiences that can reflect significantly on their future work in classroom. The aim of our research was to explore, by reviewing scientific and professional literature, the effects of the initial education and training of foreign language teachers, and focusing on different aspects of the preparation for the teacher's profession (theoretical lecturing and practical training), to find out in which ways various programs can influence the cognition of foreign language teachers and to consider pedagogic implications that these information might have for the organization of initial education and training of students

Indirect speech in Serbian and Russian

    No full text
The paper discusses syntactic constructions with indirect speech in Serbian and Russian and the models of representing somebody else`s speech with those constructions in both languages. Contrastive analysis shows that Russian models with indirect speech are more tightly related to modality (objective modality in the use of the conjunction čtoby, and subjective modality by the possibility of using the conjunction budto)

Construction Grammar (CxG) is a cognitively based approach to language analysis that has become quite well-developed and whose methods and techniques have been well-documented in the vast body of literature presenting studies on various issues of (predominantly English) language. CxG recognizes language as a set of complex linguistic units called constructions and regards lexicon and syntax as two poles along a continuum. After introductory chapter on basic notions and concepts of CxG this paper presents the constructionist framework as a viable tool for L2 instruction which in combination with other teaching techniques and methods can guide L2 students to the desired levels of proficiency and accuracy while at the same time raising their language and cultural awareness.
