Slavic lexis denoting human traits and emotions in Elezović’s dictionary of the Kosovo and Metohija dialect

    No full text
The paper discusses the Slavic lexis denoting human traits and emotions in Gliša Elezović’s Dictionary of the Kosovo and Metohija Dialect. The author of the dictionary collected the material at the very beginning of the 20th century, which means that the volume presents the lexical material of the nineteenth century and possibly even earlier (since the material for the dictionary also comes in part from a written document from the eighteenth century). The present analysis of the lexis results in a large number of conclusions with respect to the culture of the nineteenth-century Serbs who lived in Vučitrn, and in Kosovo in general. Also, it is possible to arrive at a number of observations concerning the word-formation processes, as well as the semantic diachronic changes in the Serbian lexis

U radu stoga razmatramo pitanja istorijskog i istoriografskog, imaginarnog i umetničkog u stvaralaštvu Dona DeLila, i to prevashodno u romanima Ratnerova zvezda (1976), Beli šum (1985), Vaga (1988), Mao II (1991), Podzemlje (1997), Padač (2007) i Tačka Omega (2010). Stilska, tematska i konceptualna raznolikost odabranih dela omogućava nam praćenje razvoja istorijske svesti u romanesknom svetu ovog autora, koji karakteriše obilje sučeljenih perspektiva preuzetih iz raznovrsnih umetničkih i vanumetničkih oblasti. Osim književnih žanrova i drugih umetničkih formi, od slikarstva i arhitekture do filma i fotografije, opus Dona DeLila uključuje i diskurs drugih disciplina, poput filozofije, istoriografije, sociologije i politike, matematike, fizike i astrofizike, sve do teologije, mistike i astrologije. Stoga takvom izuzetno bogatom i raznolikom opusu u ovom radu pristupamo transdisciplinarno, ukrštanjem književnih, kulturoloških, istorijskih, političkih i filozofskih teorija. This thesis explores the questions of history and fiction in the novels of Don DeLillo, one of the most distinguished contemporary American authors. In this study, history is understood both as the wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience, and as historiography, the textual practice of writing historical experience in order to define it within scientific discourse. Similarly, the term fiction is used both in the sense of imagination and fancy on the one hand, and the genre of the novel and artistic discourse in general on the other. Hence, this thesis is concerned with the problems of the historical and the historiographic, the imaginary and the artistic in Don DeLillo's opus, primarily in Ratner's Star (1976), White Noise (1985), Libra (1988), Mao II (1991), Underworld (1997), Falling Man (2007) and Point Omega (2010). The stylistic, thematic and conceptual diversity of these selected novels allows the development of a historical consciousness to be followed in these works, which are characterized by an abundance of largely conflicting perspectives taken from various artistic and non-artistic fields. Apart from different literary and other art forms, from architecture and fine arts to photography and film, DeLillo's oeuvre also borrows from the discourse of other disciplines, including philosophy, history, sociology and politics, mathematics, physics and astrophysics, theology, mysticism and astrology. Therefore, this thesis combines literary, cultural, historical, political and philosophical theories in order to approach such a diverse oeuvre from a transdisciplinary stance. After a short introduction to Don DeLillo's poetics in the light of his interest in history, the first chapter presents a critical review of some of the important theoretical concepts and hypotheses which help define the author's complex approach to this subject matter. These are the theories which analyze the boundaries and common grounds of fictional and factual discourses: from the positivist view of history as science to the theory of “historical imagination” and the concept of history as “imaginary narration,” theories of poetic and historical illusion, history as a literary genre and the genre of “historiographic metafiction,” to the “metaphysics of inner experience” and theories beyond the textual and discursive. The second chapter explores history as a thematic and narrative framework in DeLillo's novels, from the author's “sense of history” and the role of an individual in history, to the narrative strategies and techniques which examine the process of the writing of history. The latter is discussed in more detail in the third chapter, in the context of technoculture and the discourse of modern and new media, as we perceive an increase in the tension between history and fiction with the development of technology. Finally, the last chapter discusses the unfathomable secret of history, which remains forever out of reach, as a perpetual source of inspiration for DeLillo’s characters of artists and scholars. In this part we also explore the relations of science, technology, theology, mysticism and art as different spheres of human activity through which characters in DeLillo’s novels try to make sense of history

The PhD thesis titled “Islamic Reality of Yemen – Cultural, Religious and Political Aspect” was conceived as a broad study of Yemeni culture and society. The idea was to write a multidisciplinary study that would serve as a basis for further, more focused, research. In its broadest sense, the subject of research is Yemeni culture and society with focus on their diverse and fragmented nature. This cultural and social diversity of the South Arabians is reflected through various aspects. In its rich history Yemen has never been a home to a stable unified state which is the first clear sign that we are dealing with heterogeneous society. When religion is concerned, it is a known fact that in Yemen coexist two different schools of Islamic jurisprudence, Shafi‘i and Zaydi, with the former being a Sunni maḏhab and the latter a Shia branch which is significantly present only in that part of the World. Also, one of the key features of Yemeni society is its tribal nature, which makes a strong impact on social and political life in Yemen. This could be highly problematic in a situation when in one country there is no consensus about the role of the tribe in political life, and this is the case in Yemen. This study is conceived in accordance with the abovementioned facts. The goal of the author is to analyse and present the main characteristics of Yemeni culture and society and also to use this analysis in order to explain the fragile position of Yemen as a unified state

    No full text

The concept of emptiness in Ajvaz's prose

    No full text
The subject of space is recognized as one of the dominant topics in the poetics of contemporary Czech novelist Michal Ajvaz. In his literary work and interpretation, the topic refers to a space in the world, or to a city as a location in space, or to a text as a field of research, or to any other artistic work which can be placed in space or which deals with space itself. The most distinctive feature in describing these elements is the emptiness, which can be regarded as a particular concept in his poetics, and is significantly important in portraying literary characters and their professions, as well as in depicting the surroundings where they are placed. The concept of emptiness helps Ajvaz illustrate both the manifestation and the existence of literary universe, along with the demystification of the reader's reality. In this paper, therefore, we are trying to show the emptiness which contains unusual ideas from the unknown universe that are received by the main Narrator or by any other supporting character in the novels

One of the guidelines of the Strategy for Education Development in Serbia 2020 implies the implementation of modern ICTs onto teaching and learning methods of both existing and newly developed study programs pertaining to higher education area. The Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade, being a highly reputable and prestigious higher education institution and cherishing a long tradition in education and research in the field of language, literature and culture, strives to continuously and increasingly develop its study programs by introducing ICTs at all levels of study. Our main objective is to enhance language, literature and culture teaching and learning experience throughout blended learning. Namely, the Faculty of Philology offers, within its Moodle platform, the wealth of courses concerning different languages, literatures and cultures, as well as those belonging to social sciences (e.g. courses in developmental and educational psychology). In this way, we intend to provide our students the opportunity of acquiring comprehensive knowledge in the field of philology, literary science, cultural studies and social sciences in general, the kind of education which is indeed required of the modern age man. We also took into account the fact that the use of digital technologies is becoming prevalent in a number of learning processes and that, hence, their implementation is invaluable particularly in the field of higher education. The Faculty of Philology is extremely proud of the learning content to be found on the faculty's Moodle platform, and of the fact that it is becoming richer and more diverse every year. Courses on the undergraduate level of studies are currently divided in 20 subgroups out of 38 study groups, which involve the following: Serbian Language and Literature, Serbian Literature and Language with Comparative Studies, General Literature and Theory of Literature, General Linguistics, Library and Information Science, fourteen different languages or language groups (such as for example Scandinavian languages), as well as Seminar of Social Sciences. Each of these subgroups offers a variety of courses, which all together constitute a rich repository of knowledge in the field of philology, literary science and cultural studies. At the MA level of studies, the courses offered on the faculty's Moodle platform within Language, Literature, Culture study program include over forty different subjects. We are currently working diligently as to offer the variety of high quality learning contents within the relatively new MA study program Cultures in Dialogue in a blended learning format. For now, the contents are available for the courses Encounter of Civilizations and Elements of Western Civilization. As for the courses belonging to Language, Literature, Culture study program at the PhD level of studies, these also include a vast number of courses on all three modules. In this paper, we intend to emphasize as to how far we have come in placing learning contents onto the faculty's Moodle platform and the implications that this variety of content will have on educating future philologists in Serbia, who will, hence, gain more comprehensive knowledge than ever before in the field of philology and humanities and social sciences in general

    No full text
