Fatma aliye and defense of Islamic values
The article concerns an analysis of the recently published text by Fatma Aliye debating with European ideas and prejudices about Islam that has not been a subject of interest in the South Slavonic intellectual and academic circles. Fatma Aliye (1862-1936) was the first Turkish woman novelist, the first Turkish woman philosopher, and the author of the book Tezahur-i Hakikat (Appearance of Truth) that was published for the first time in January 2016 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of her death. Like some writers of the Tanzimat era, especially Namik Kemal, Fatma Aliye entered the debate with the European writers wishing to oppose the prevailing Orientalist approach in Europe that had been blaming Islam for the stagnation of sciences and culture. She demonstrated enviable erudition and devotion to the Islamic culture. Her views show the permanent duality of the Ottoman intellectuals between their desire for Westernization and their need to stay in the Islamic tradition. In many aspects, the approaches to Islam and the defence of Islamic values of Fatma Aliye are still current
Fostering digital literacy within the Serbian education system
Digital revolution has deeply influenced and changed the way we learn and work, often blurring the boundaries between these two fields of human activity. Bearing in mind that modern ICTs are providing access to an immense stock of knowledge and information that is freely available online, knowledge workers, as ambassadors of the 21st century workforce, must possess a high degree of digital skills and competences. In order to prepare students for digital era labour market, educational institutions (higher education institutions in particular) are obliged to respond to the challenges that our highly digitized knowledge societies are imposing by incorporating digital literacy courses into their curricula. Such courses strive to instruct students as to how to critically use modern ICTs for retrieving, assessing, storing, producing, presenting and exchanging information, as well as for participating in collaborative networks in online environment. Under the Key Competences for Lifelong Learning - European Reference Framework, digital competence is set as one of the top priorities, along with the competences of communicating in mother tongue and foreign languages, mathematical and basic competences in science and technology, entrepreneurship and civic skills, the ability to acquire new knowledge and achieve a high degree of cultural awareness and expression. Working diligently to join the European Union, Serbia has adjusted its laws on education with those adopted in the EU. This particularly refers to the Serbian Law on Higher Education, which has been aligned (to the greatest extent possible) with the guidelines stipulated by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Moreover, Serbian laws on education are advocating for an increased level of utilization of modern ICTs in the classroom. Hence, in 2013, the National Education Council of Serbia has adopted the document entitled Guidelines for promoting the role of information and communication technologies in education, the same year that the European Commission published DIGCOMP - a Framework for Developing and Understanding Digital Competence in Europe. The Education Development Strategy in Serbia until 2020 also recognizes the significance of using ICTs in teaching in order to improve Serbian education system. As one of the essential 21st century skills, digital literacy is increasingly becoming an integral part of Serbian education institutions' curricula. The paper aims at providing an overview of the official documents adopted in Serbia that are advocating for a greater level of implementation of ICTs in teaching and consequently digital literacy courses within the Serbian education system. Furthermore, we intend to present the current situation in terms of teaching digital literacy in Serbia as well as the initiatives and projects that have already been realized in the field. The later include The Digital school project and KODigranje campaign of the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, which was developed under the Battle for Knowledge initiative in order to increase the digital literacy of primary students, but also the Digital Youthquake project, which aimed at improving digital literacy skills of youth workers. In addition, we will reflect upon the place of Serbian Cyrillic alphabet on the Internet and discuss the opportunity of raising the level of its visibility online by means of fostering digital literacy within the Serbian education system
India in Mystifications of Miloš Milojević and Stefan Verković
Тиме су веровали да доказују старину Словена (код Верковића), односно Срба (код Милојевића).With Romanticism and with a new field of comparative Indo-European linguistics,
a new image of India emerged in European culture. It changed the way how Europeans
saw their own origins. This kind of influence can be discerned in folkloric mystifications
by Miloš Milojević and Stefan Vekrović in 19th century. Both use names from Hinduism
and create the image of India as the ancient homeland for “proving” the antiquity of Slavic
nations (Verković), or Serbs more specifically (Milojević)
On One Marginalia of Scribe Abercius
443).Intensive literary cooperation between Slavic monks on Mount Athos in the beginning of the 15th century is also corroborated by the translation of Maximos Homologetes’
Serbian Slavonic translation was composed by Jacob “Dobropisac”
in 1425, in the Athonite monastery of St. Paul, and ordered by Eusebius Ephraim “Russian”,
famous Russian scribe of the time. The original manuscript is not preserved, but its copies
exist both in the Russian and in the Athonite monastic centers (Hilandar). One marginalia
in the Hilandar menologium with January, written by monk Abercius at Karyes on Athos
in 1626 (Hilandar Monastery, codex 443), is a late, unexpected testimony of the lasting
memory of this literary cooperation
The Endangered Horizon in Alice Oswald's “Dunt: a Poem For a Nearly Dried-Up River
Classical outpourings in Alice Oswald’s “Dunt: a poem for a nearly-dried up river” are juxtaposed against the culture of that which is almost gone – a language, a way of being and connecting, a part of nature. What is “almost dried up” is not only the river, but access to classical culture, which Matthew Arnold, C. S. Lewis, and John Ruskin extolled in order to defend non-scientific aspects of man’s nature. “Dunt” relates readers to the world in a way that seeks the aesthetic rather than an argument and, with its repeated imperative, “try again”, demonstrates an attempt to give a hearing to that which is in danger of disappearing. The imperative mood echoes the Heideggerian injunction to give a hearing to the nature of things, against the ongoing bid made by ‘progress’ to annihilate them and conceal their ability to shine forth as a world – almost drying them up
The culture of spin
The term spin (referring to a form of propaganda in the political discourse, in the sense of interpretation or slant placed on an event or a phenomenon) gained widespread use during the final decades of the 20th century, and the communication strategies that it encompasses have become an indispensable element of the globally networked contemporary civilisation, transposing without much in the way of obstacles from one culture to another. Indeed, the importance of spinning in all forms of public relations has become such that many public figures do not dare open their mouths in public before being prepared for it by experts, the so-called 'spin doctors'. For the most part, the term 'spin' is not used with a neutral connotation in terms of value, as is, for example, the case with the term 'communication', but more or less pejoratively, in order to discredit the work of public relations experts. Even though 'spin doctors' are practically by definition considered to be manipulators, there are those among them who are recognised as masters of their chosen profession, although the ethical character of their work is often called into question. In this paper, we consider the contribution of such masters of spin as George Stephanopoulos and Alastair Campbell to the political rise of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair, and also to the subsequent lack of trust of the public in the publicly spoken words of their best-known clients. These paradigmatic cases of spin in public relations have broader implications for the potential achievements of this communication strategy and its perspectives in the contemporary world, wherein reality increasingly takes on the character of the virtual
Towards a Different Knowledge: The Database Knjiženstvo and the Digitization of Materials
The first part of the paper presents the concept of digital humanities and the
phases which some researchers note in the development of the humanities in new,
digital media, as well as the role of digital humanities in the promotion of the
marginalized literatures, above all, literature written by women. The core example
is the digital database Knjiženstvo, certain segments of which contain not only the
data on the texts, but the digitized texts, as well. In this paper, we pose the question
on how databases can be involved in creating new knowledge at all educational
levels. Thus we reach the necessity of expanding some segments of the database to
include those publications on which they already contain information. In relation to
this, it has been observed that one of the greatest problems is the part of the database
dealing with the periodicals, women and feminist, and therefore, the second part of
the paper is dedicated to this topic. We first analyze the terms women and feminist
magazines, and afterwards, we consider the ways in which the materials from these
periodicals could be gathered, classified and connected
