Poetics of syuzhet - dialectics of form and content in the narrative prose of Simo Matavulj

Theoretical category "poetics" in a given study includes an analysis of several structural elements in the narrative prose of Simo Matavulj. Primarily, theoretical elaboration of the syuzhet (sujet) and motifs in the study of principles of genesis and construction in syuzhet, the problem of artistic space and time, functional style and conceptual plan, dynamic properties of the hero and genre specifics. Although the category of "poetics" is taken in a broad sense, there is not tendency to include all possible aspects of Matavuljʼs poetics. The aim of the research is focused on finding the poetic coordinates that are not accidental, but a consequent and incorporate the most important aspects of the Simo Matavuljʼs poetics (syuzhet, chronotope, composition, genre, the morphology of a hero and structure of a narrative form). But also on finding those aspects that enable the coordination of non-structural levels in a literary scope (for example, issues of implementation of modern literary myths, cultural heritage of carnivalization, relation between realistic mimesis and legitimacy of lies in realism)..

The University of Belgrade (founded in 1808) carries out study programs at thirty-one faculty, at the level of basic academic, basic professional, graduate academic, specialist academic, specialized professional, doctoral and multidisciplinary studies, harmonizing them with the principles of the Bologna Declaration. Teachers and associates of the University of Belgrade (8,000 of them) make up the largest part of the scientific potential of Serbia. The University of Belgrade was ranked among the best world universities in 8 out of 46 scientific fields and in two scientific fields within the QS World University Rankings by Subjects for 2017. In the field of philology, the University of Belgrade ranks between 201st and 250th place. Continuing the tradition of openness towards the world and being aware of the reputation that it enjoys, its geographical position and potentials, the University of Belgrade strives to affirm the policy of friendly and constructive academic links with universities worldwide, as well as to improve international exchange of teachers, students and administration, in accordance with the adopted documents, the Strategy for the Internationalization of the University of Belgrade (2014) and the Action Plan for Internationalization of the University of Belgrade. The University of Belgrade is ready to maintain and improve its position as the leading higher education institution in the region, by adapting itself to the challenges of the new age, but at the same time preserving what is worthwhile in its tradition, which is why it is recognized as a true national brand. One of its forms of leadership in the region are its joint study programs with foreign universities (already developed or planned), among which particularly noteworthy are those that resulted from the cooperation with universities in London, Moscow, Versailles, Orleans, Dublin, and Tehran. One of the most active members of the University of Belgrade is the Faculty of Philology with almost 500 employees and 10,000 students, numerous cooperation agreements and realized study programs, which thus represents an excellent theoretical and empirical potential for drawing conclusions on the significance, quality and results of joint study programs. The paper will first present current efforts of the University of Belgrade to achieve internationalization of its studies by offering numerous joint study programs in English and French. From the theoretical point of view, we will make an overview of previous studies which emphasized the benefits that stem from introducing joint study programs in otherwise somewhat more traditional educational institutions, while offering the example of modernized curricula of the faculties pertaining to the University of Belgrade. Theoretical framework will be further supported through empirical research involving 50 students of the Faculty of Philology having already successfully completed international joint study programs, whereby research results, inter alia, indicate that the faculties of philology, as educational institutions where foreign languages, their literatures and cultures are being studied, represent optimal places to implement joint study programs and easily blend diverse scientific fields together (e.g. by combining language, literature and culture studies with management, law, business administration, international trade and many other fields of study)

The influence of Pisarev on Svetozar Marković's poetic conceptions

    No full text
Svetozar Marković prvi je teoretičar realizma u Srbiji i njegova poetika pod snažnim je uticajem Dmitrija Ivanoviča Pisareva. Od Pisareva on preuzima osnovnu teorijsku distinkciju estetika-realizam. Realizam počiva na ideologiji naučnog napretka i društvene korisnosti. Svetozar Marković was the first theoretician of realism in Serbia and his poetics were significantly influenced by Dmitry Ivanovich Pisarev. He adopted from Pisarev the fundamental theoretical distinction of aesthetics-realism. Realism is based on the ideology of scientific progress and social utility. Aesthetics is the enemy of realism because it is based on metaphysical categories. Realism is useful for society, while aesthetics is harmful for society. Marković adopted Pisarev's most important theoretical views, such as the utilitarian function of literature, the preference of content in relation to form, the relativistic understanding of literary value based on the criterion of social utility, the ontological priority of reality compared to art, the rejection of lyricism and sentimentality, and favouring the novel over other literary genres. Marković followed Pisarev in the belief that social utility is the basic function of literary work and also a measure of its value. Thus, the relationships between Russian and Serbian theoreticians are multiple and strong and show the importance of Russian literary thought for the formation of the poetics of realism in Serbia

    No full text

The dubrovnik landscape and images of Baroque Dubrovnik and Dučić's narrative and metaphysical poetry

    No full text
In this article we intend to examine the synthesis of Dučić's experience of the Mediterranean world, above all of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik hinterland, from where he comes and to which his whole life has been closely linked. Our research will be based on the hypothesis that, in order to understand Dučić's lyrical opus corectly, it is not enough to consider only the characteristics of its form and content, but also to gain serious and comprehensive insights into all aspects of the poet's spiritual development and literary engagement. First of all it is important to define cultural-historical atmosphere of the time and space in which Dučić's has lived and worked. For the purpose of our research, we will analyze two thematically diverse poetic cycles by Dučić: the Adriatic Sonnets and the Dubrovnik Poems. Through their landscape motifs and scenes from Baroque Dubrovnik, we shall determine their roles in interpreting Dučić's experience of the Mediterranean world in his metaphysical and narrative poetry

    No full text
The paper discusses determinologization in the Serbian language. This process is thoroughly analyzed, explained and defined. Determinologization forms part of the process of enriching a language fund, and is distinguished from the process of terminologization and other language processes. The paper focuses on the comparison of the semantic content of a lexical unit determined as a term and one which has been determinologizied. The paper provides an attempt to answer the question as to how detereminologization may be an active way to enrich the general vocabulary of the Serbian language

Autobiographical narratives of Hungarians of Bukovina in Banat

    No full text
The research subject of the thesis are Hungarians of Bukovina in the South Banat District; settlements of Vojlovica, Ivanovo and Skorenovac. A qualitative research of the community is used as a methodology on which the thesis is based. In compiling of this work it was necessary to use an interdisciplinary approach. This implies the importance of putting the ethnic community in a historical context, as well as understanding and pointing out the role and significance of language and language attitudes in the formation of ethnic identity. In addition, an analysis of oral autobiographical narratives was conducted. The dissertation also investigates the connection between memory and identity. Attempts are being made to discover how the past influences the formation of ethnic identity of the community members. The results from the qualitative research revealed that in addition to personal (individual) memories, members of the minority community are being deeply connected to the memory of previous generations. In autobiographical narratives of Hungarians of Bukovina, the descendants of Székelys of Bukovina, common structural features and themes can be found, as well as collective narratives, these being the ethnic narratives that define ethnic identity of groups. In the analysis of interviews we have conducted, both the method of narrative analysis of personal experience, and the method of narratological analysis with emphasis on the temporal structure of narrative was applied

The effect of using ludic activities on learning English as a foreign language in tertiary education and students' attitudes concerning their usage

Ludic activities, also referred to as educational or didactic games, were the topic of discussion as early as the time of Plato. Many philosophers, anthropologists and educators have dealt with the origins of games, their significance and place in the educational setting. When it comes to English language learning, ludic activities are primarily used with children. We believe that this kind of teaching could be very significant when working with adults as well. The topic of the research presented in this PhD dissertation is the effect of ludic activities on learning English as a foreign language and students’ attitudes towards their usage. The ludic activities which were used were aimed at revising grammar and vocabulary units. The participants in this experiment were the students of the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, who had chosen to attend classes in English as a foreign language and to whom that was the first year of learning English at the faculty. The experiment was carried out during the second semester of 2014/15. During that time the students were divided into two homogenous groups (the control and the experimental group). The control group revised grammar and vocabulary units in the traditional way (through the usual exercises of circling the correct answer, filling in the gaps, transformations, etc.). The experimental group was exposed to ludic activities, five of which dealt with revising grammar, and the other five with revising vocabulary. After each activity the students would fill out a short questionnaire stating how much they liked the activity and how useful it was. They were also asked to write a short comment about each activity. At the end of the course both groups did a multiple choice test which contained questions about the relevant grammar and vocabulary units. After doing the statistical analysis of the obtained data it was determined that the students who were exposed to ludic activities on average had better results in the test compared to the students who worked in the traditional way. When the results for the vocabulary section of the test were analysed separately from those concerning the grammar section, it was determined that the experimental group on average had better results than the control group when it comes to vocabulary, but not when it comes to grammar. The difference in the results for the grammar section of the test was not statistically significant. The comments of the students from the experimental group about each of the activities could be useful for choosing the appropriate ludic activities and organising this kind of teaching at the tertiary level of education
