The medieval heritage of Japan and Byzantium in Serbian literature of digital modernism
The basic hypothesis of this research belongs to the field of interdisciplinary studies of Serbian literature, especially of the changes in literary paradigms, formed on the boundary of interactions between Slavic and non-Slavic literatures, which reached significant dynamics in the unifying perspectives of the new media. The main assumption of this analysis concerns the relationship between the elements of medieval Byzantine and Japanese literary heritage in the context of the development of Serbian literature with certain elements of digital modernism
On basic meaning of the active perfect in Serbian and its typological classification
This paper is an attempt to typologically classify the Serbian perfect, i.e.
to determine to what extent the perfect in Serbian can still be considered a
perfect. The basic meaning of the Serbian perfect is indeed the one of
perfect; however, the perfect can be used in narrative as well. The aorist
and the truncated perfect also express the perfect meaning; this meaning,
however, is not their basic meaning; in fact, these two past forms are
unspecified for temporal perspective. The perfect expresses the whole
spectrum of perfect subtypes, whereas the aorist and the truncated perfect
are more specialized forms, more limited in expressing perfect semantics.
The perfect in Serbian was classified as the general expanded perfect,
whereas the aorist and the truncated perfect were classified as the
specialized expanded preterite, and the specialized expanded perfect,
respectively
Arab countries, Iran and Turkey as the stimuli in an association test
The aim of this study was to determine what Serbs think about Oriental countries and what stereotypes about them occur in the Serbian speaking area. The data were collected using the association test that was done by 654 subjects..
Lexicographic competence of foreign language students
Although it is often considered that successful use of a dictionary does not require any special knowledge or skills, research has shown that most users do not consult dictionaries efficiently or frequently enough. Users often avoid consulting dictionaries as much as they can, because they consider it to be a tedious and uninteresting task. Even when they consult a dictionary, most of them are not familiar with types of dictionaries, what type of dictionary would be the most useful one or how to assess the quality of a dictionary. A lot of information in a dictionary remains unnoticed and/or users fail to interpret it. These statements hold true for most users and for students of humanities or linguistics. Just like other users, students of linguistics fail to notice their own lack of user competence and are often unwilling to invest some time and effort to improve it. They may be willing to change this attitude only after being persuaded through a series of obvious examples that they fail to notice a lot of useful information that would allow them to avoid certain mistakes or to solve a problem. In this paper the authors will analyze responses to a questionnaire completed by students of English, Scandinavian languages and German at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, which show their attitude to using dictionaries, their habits and what they know about the dictionaries that are crucial for their studies and future careers. The authors will use this analysis to point to the necessary improvements in user competence these students are supposed to achieve and possible ways of achieving it
The influence of dominant cognitive cultural models and values on invectives connected to the figure of mother in Swedish and Italian language [Uticaj vladajućih kognitivnih kulturnih modela i vrednosti na uvredljive izraze vezane za figuru majke u Švedsk
The goal of this paper is to examine the influence of the ruling cognitive cultural models regarding the position of female family members (above all that of a mother) in Swedish and Italian society on the offensive expressions in Swedish and Italian language. The theory of cognitive cultural models, together with the model of mental programming, is therefore the frame and the starting point for the analysis. The main hypothesis was that the different cultural models in these two societies directly influence the themes of offensive expressions in their respective languages. The empirical research is based on qualitative interviews with native speakers of Swedish and Italian, and the received data is subjected to descriptive analysis. The data is broadened with synonymous expressions that are in active use, as found in the dictionaries. The results have shown that the in these two languages there is a clear difference in the practical use of expressions mentioning one's mother with the goal of offending indirectly - in Italian they exist while in Swedish they do not. With the analysis we hope to have proven that this in fact corresponds with the existence of a desirable model of behavior defining the role of a woman (mother) in life and family in Italian society, and breaking of said model results in the offensive effect of certain expressions still in everyday use in Italian language. On the other hand, such a model does not exist in the Swedish society, rendering similar expressions pointless and subsequently non-existent in the modern Swedish language
Some dilemmas and challenges of the academic translation teaching
The paper presents the introduction of new master translation courses at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. It describes the curricula for the translation courses in Translatology in the main study programme Language, Literature, Culture, as well as for a specialized translationand interpretation-oriented study programme Master in Conference Interpreting and Translation (MCIT). Both programmes have been conceived in line with the contemporary theories of translation and abide by the best translation teaching strategies of top European universities. Their aim is not only to develop students' translational competencies to adequately convey words and their meanings from the source language to the target language, but also to get thorough background knowledge of the subject matter along with the knowledge of cultural and social factors which can influence possible meanings, especially when it comes to community translation. The paper also tries to show how such a transformation of the traditional approach to translation teaching can consequently lead to the transformation of a notion of translator from someone who converts words from one language to another to an intellectual worker with academic professional training
Paradigmatics and syntagmatics of dependent graphemes and two types of orthographic systems in European literacy
The topic of this paper is the issue of paradigmatic and syntagmatic status of dependent graphemes in European systems of literacy. The overview of their paradigmatic and syntagmatic status can be useful for clearer understanding of the relationship between the linguistic basis and graphic form and could indicate important differences that exist among European systems of literacy
This paper presents and analyses language characteristics identified in economic texts created as a result of translation from Italian into Serbian by MA students of the Italian Department of the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade.
The paper has two aims. The first aim is to find out whether Serbian translations contain
the following translation universals: normalisation, simplification, and explicitation, and if
they do, to specify language levels at which the universals are dominant: morphological, syntactic, or lexical. The second aim is to define possible implications for LSP translation teaching
by using the obtained data, especially from the perspective of defining teaching instructions
and strategies before and during the translation process.
Considering the fact that there is neither a relevant electronic corpus of economic texts
in Serbian (comparable corpus) nor a corpus of such texts in Italian with the corresponding
Serbian translation (parallel corpus), the research on the above-mentioned universals is exclusively based on the analysis of the students’ translations.
The research results show that Serbian translations have all translation universals mentioned above. In addition, a detailed analysis of the obtained results identifies lexis, the level
that makes LSP texts different from general language texts, as the level at which the universals appear most. These data have been used for introducing new teaching instructions and reaching in this way the second goal of the research
Harry Potter and the Glottal Stop: Glottal Replacement and T-Voicing in Contemporary RP
The aim of this paper is to highlight the extent of advance made by T-glottalling and T-voicing in younger RP (Received Pronunciation) speakers. The scope of the research extends no further than two speakers, actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, with speech analysed being extracted from publicly available interviews with the two. We believe, however, that their speech habits are fairly typical of the non-regional Southern British accent characteristic of their generation. Furthermore, what makes their speech worthy of attention is the fact that millions of young EFL learners have seen the Harry Potter series of films Radcliffe and Watson starred in, thus making the actors potentially very popular EFL pronunciation role models, at least for those learners who have Standard British pronunciation as their target. The results obtained are compared with those from an extensive and systematic study of young RP speech conducted by Fabricius (2000) regarding glottal replacement, and with the study of newsreader RP by Hannisdal (2006) regarding T-voicing
