On complex sentences with a commentative conditional clause
In contemporary Serbian, besides prototypical complex sentences with a
conditional clause, there are several types of complex sentences with a
conditional clause which has a primarily commentative function: Na otvaranje
izložbe došlo je dva desetak ljudi, ako ih je bilo i toliko (At the
exhibition opening, there were some twenty people, if that many); Ukoliko
dobro pamtim, bagrem je prošle godine cvetao rano (If I remember well,
acacias blossomed early last year), etc. The main aim of this paper is to
analyse the syntactic structure of complex sentences of this type, to
identify their syntactic and semantic subtypes, and to explore and describe
their discourse functions. [Project of the Serbian Ministry of Education,

Caught in the cross-fire: Tackling hate speech from the perspective of language and translation pedagogy
Hate speech is a phenomenon which has been in the focus of scholarly interest of linguists, philosophers, sociologists, human-rights advocates, legal and media experts. Much of this interest has been devoted to establishing criteria for identifying what constitutes hate speech across disciplines. In this paper, we argue that hate speech has profiled as a distinct subgenre of the language of politics with typical patterns and ways of addressing which can be recognized in political campaigns across the world. Therefore, we present the findings of the case study of translation exercises of English and Serbian texts containing samples of hateful language during presidential campaigns in the USA and Serbia in 2016 and 2017. Our aim is to identify the linguistico-pragmatic commonalities of hate speech in Serbian and English and examine students' attitudes towards ethically and morally challenging language contents in their mother tongue (L1) and English as their foreign language (L2). The results indicate that in both English and Serbian the same groups (e.g. members of ethnic minorities or LGBT population, women etc.) are targeted with the hateful language which in both languages uses vulgarisms, taboo words, sexist and chauvinistic declarative expressions to achieve political goals. In addition, L1>L2 and L2>L1 translation data indicate that personal moral and ethical norms in translators are stronger in L1 thus restrictively affecting translational L2>L1 output
Iranian libraries along the silk road
Iran as a homeland for ancient civilizations has a long tradition in preserving
written works and the history of writing in the Persian Empire dates back to four thousand
years ago. Library and librarianship in Iran have developed through history, based on
documents, in Achaemenid Empire, the Apadana Palace Library contained thousands of
Clay tablet, used as a writing medium, which could indicate the old tradition of Iranian
librarianship. The most well-known library of ancient Persia belonged to the Academy
of Gondishapur, also known as the Jondishapur University, in the era of Sasanian Empire.
After Islam, libraries were based in islamic schools, such as Nezamiyeh, Madrese,
Beyt Al-hekme, etc. Most of those libraries where located in cities which were the main
route of the Silk Road. In this paper, a classificaon of three historical periods of Iranian
libraries, before Islam, after Islam and in the Modern era, are introduced
Zagađivanje i zaštita vazduha, vode i zemljišta
Current state of japanese language education in Serbia and proposal for future solutions
The purpose of this paper is to address the state of the education system in Serbia in relation to Japanese language studies, with a particular focus on primary and secondary educational institutions. To start off, I will introduce the institutions where the Japanese language is being taught in Serbia, before turning my attention to the teaching programs (i.e. course guidelines as an accredited national guideline). Following that, I will present our Japanese language textbook writing projects. Finally, I will shed light on the problems we have faced and propose a number of potential solutions

The image of the Balkans in travel books of Slovaks in Vojvodina in 1920s
The intensive folk life of Slovaks in Vojvodina after 1918, when they became a part of a new country - the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and later on Yugoslavia - was also reflected in the development of publishing, which opened a special place to a twofold genre- travel books. The author of such literature of different qualities about the Balkans was mainly the intellectual with a cosmopolitan orientation, Andrej Labith (1886 - 1934) in magazine Narodnd jednota (National Unity) and in almanac Neirodnj, kalencleir (National Calendar). In his works, he placed focus on geographic, historical and economic characteristics of unique locations in the Balkans, that is, within the borders of the former Kingdom, and captured stereotypical images of that time through their cultural and geographic aspects. His texts about travels do have primarily features of publications, but from the perspective of selected imagological method, they are model-texts about the form (not only) of stereotypes of the time. Positive and negative stereotypes in his travel books are the products of specific historical and social circumstances. He visited regions such as Slovenia, Dalmatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and he illustrated the idea of Slavic peoples adapting to e.g. Adriatic Sea area. He also used the ideological function of travel books in the spirit of national geography and national emblematic which derived from identifying with history of brotherly, Serbian people, as it is shown in the travels around Kosovo and Macedonia. At the same time, analyzed images show both the other and different, as well as self-presentation and self-identification. As such they present a considerable stereotypical cultural antagonism of the West and East (presenting the contrast between: Kosovo, Macedonia-Slovenia, Kosovo - Vojvodina/Backa). The images (geographical, historical, ethnic, confessional, economic) of such a heterogeneous country of South Slays located in the Balkan Peninsula in line with a concrete presentation of their new homeland, are among Slovaks in Vojvodina becoming tools of strengthening their national consciousness, but in contact with the other and foreign they also strengthen their self-images as a hard-working ethnicity
